The Age of Steam Roundhouse of Sugarcreek, Ohio is an eclectic collection of steam locomotives housed inside a fully recreated 15-stall roundhouse. In November 2021, a select group of photographers were invited for an exclusive photo charter event for a rare glimpse at the steam era. This was faithfully recreated with Morehead & North Fork 0-6-0 12 fired up and operated around the premises. Between switching cars in the freight yard and being tended to at the various structures, it didn't take much effort to make the overall atmosphere as believable as possible.

To me, this is what a roundhouse is. Not a decaying mausoleum or a silent gallery..A roundhouse is a lively place, the clank and bang of tools, the whirr of dynamos and the thump of air pumps cycling. It's alive with the yard goats shuttling back and forth on their errands while the road power is maintained or readied for the next run. Most of all it's the people, a roundhouse has the sounds of people. People working, sometimes an odd curse, a cheery hum or a little ditty being whistled, a few snatches of conversation rising over the din.

This roundhouse was built brand new in 2012, the first new one built since the 1950s. The 12 is their only operable steam engine, the 33 and 19 are the closest to being operable again.

Holy smokes! They restored 1187 already? Granted it's only cosmetic but still! Also, is 12 the only operable steam engine as of now or are there others? I know 1293 and 6325 used to but need numerous repairs to get back up.

The 12 is the only operable steam engine at Age of Steam right now. Everything else needs repairs or rebuild to run again.

It’s their engine, they’ll deal with it as they see fit. In this very video, you can see a freshly restored locomotive operating so it’s not like they aren’t making progress.

I doubt they will restore 763. If a big engine ever was to be restored, they’d probably go with 6325. It would be a good bit of work fixing the bearing issues and doing a 1472, but it could be done.

They’ve had 763 since 2007. They have had 6325 in the collection since 1992 and it’s been at the roundhouse since it opened.
