On November 9, 2022 we had the opportunity to tour the incredible Age Of Steam Roundhouse Museum in Sugarcreek, Ohio with their Executive Director Pete Poremba. This place is remarkable! They house the largest privately owned collection of steam locomotives in the world! This Ohio treasure presents the history of the steam locomotive in a unique, real world enviroment that is like walking back in time to when these steam monsters ruled the rails. They are carrying on the vision of their founders, Jerry and Laura Jacobson, in a beautifully kept and organized facility, and you will want to make plans now to see it for yourself in person! Thanks to the Age Of Steam Roundhouse Museum Executive Director Pete Poremba for serving as our tour guide and for welcoming our "Tales Of Southeastern Ohio" cameras into the roundhouse and onto their property. Find out more at www.ageofsteamroundhouse.org or phone (330) 852 4676.

Beautiful seeing 1187 in such great shape, I’m glad you guys have decided to bring her back to her glory. She unfortunately didn’t suit the Strausburg Railroad but it’s nice to know she isn’t forgotten

Incredible! I live in Northern CA, Ft. Bragg. We have the Skunk Train Excursion run here. Pales to what you’ve shown and that’s OK. This tour will be in my do list when I visit family spread out in Eastern states. I discovered you all by reading a March 2010 article in Train Magazine. I belong to a model train club (MCMR&HS. YT & FB) situated in one of their buildings. We are G scale modeling the logging years, mostly redwood, starting in the 1850s. It’s very cool and a great addition to the Skunk tour of the Redwoods. Got me started collecting again and I’m 76. What a wonderful story for the ages. Thank you so much. ben

It's too bad they can't get the OK for running on the main line again. We'll have to live with videos of Jerry's RR in all it's glory. This is on my bucket list to see.

Hey Pete! This IS the best video tour of the property I've seen to date...TOP NOTCH, AND FIRST CLASS!!! One thing though as with other videos I've seen is that there is little coverage of GTW 6325? Yeah, she can be seen from a distance and a quick-pic in your slide show, but do you know of anybody out there who does an in-depth video walk-around of her? She would be my ONLY reason for visiting AOS, (not really, but close to). Also, did anybody ever fix her main driver bearing issue?

I literally visited there with my friend 2 days later. Veteran’s Day and it was rainy all day. Glad we were inside for the tour. We just did the standard tour. Did you get to do the more access tour? 6325 is my favorite steam locomotive there. Got to ride behind her at the Dennison TrainFestival as a kid in 2004. Hadn’t seen her since then until my visit. 18 long years!

Hi Garrett, thanks for watching. They invited us in on a day that they were closed so that we would have full access with their executive director (as you can see in the video) as our your guide. The place is amazing! Thanks again for watching and be sure to share the video and subscribe if you haven't already.

Emperor of the north.I loved seeing those steam locomotives with Keith Cardean Ernest Bornine Lee Marvin. I always liked trains .We're I live near the Seaboard Air line / Seaboard coast line. I could hear the trains blowing for grade crossing. My first school was close to the tracks.I have watched many fast freight trains go by.This was not always good for me because of the teacher would not be happy with me.

I never heard of a compressed air locomotive like the one at about 5:14. that is very interesting. Have you ever heard of an electric steam locomotive? I have seen pics of them and thought they were very odd

I have heard of them but have never seen one first hand, I guess they were for the same reasons as the compressed air units, for use in areas where fire or hot coals or embers could be a big problem. Thanks for checking out our KZbin channel!

I always wanted to go there. Every time I tried to go there they were sold out. Is it still difficult to get access there or have things changed? I was at the Dennison Railroad event years ago and I rode steam there and also rode the steam trains when Jerry put the events on at Sugarcreek

Hey Jaw Tooth, thanks for subscribing, we appreciate it! We tried for at least 6 months before their executive director got back with us. They invited us to come on a day that they were closed so we had full run of the place. They were wonderful! We had heard that they restricted video shooting there but they could not have been nicer to us. We have been invited back when they have one of the steam locomotives up and running. We are in southeastern Ohio (Athens County) so it is about a 2 1/2 hour run up there so we had arrangments made in advance . If you have the time, check out our video riding in the cab of the Hocking Valley Scenic Railroad's (Nelsonville, Ohio) Baldwin steam locomotive. I looked like a coal miner after about 4 hours on board that beautiful loco. Let us know if you're ever in our area, our email is dr20039@yahoo.com. Thanks again for watching!

0:39 "Steam engines had one fatal flaw." "It was the high pressures and temperatures that made them work." So, the physical nature of steam that facilitates mechanical work and runs the engines, is the flaw? Yet, we extol the very virtues of steam, the power of steam power and how it basically brought about the industrial revolution? Perhaps the fatal flaw(s) was the materials from which we have to make and contain steam. If we really boiled it down (pun taken), metallurgy and water are the flaws. If you know anything about boilers, you know that the steel in the boiler tubes in a boiler changes over time with constant thermal temperature swings. Steel's metallurgical properties change too, as it is exposed to water, which changes the properties of the steel. The water that is used in boilers also carries hardness minerals that, when the water boils off, leaves depositions on the tubes, thus changing the dynamics of the boiler. In essence, the tubes in a boiler change over time. They lose their original pressure ratings and become embrittled and weak. If a boiler is not regularly inspected and the tubes cleaned out, you get hot-spots that further compromise the boiler's metal thus leading up to disaster. Boiler makers and mechanical engineers have learned from these accidents to make boilers substantially safer. If there is an accident, there is usually something linked to the mechanical failure, such as any combination of the following: a poor or insufficient inspection program, improper boiler build materials(the steel tubes), poor design, running a boiler beyond its internal mechanical life, a failure to properly maintain the boiler and/or other human error that caused the boiler to fail.

Does the museum have any plan to restore Gettysburg/Canadian Pacific 1278 to operation? It hasn't run in nearly 30 years due to the backdraft boiler explosion it suffered while on the Gettysburg Railroad.

From The Age Of Steam Executive Director...#1278 has had little done to it since it arrived at the Roundhouse and there are no plans, at this time, to do anything more with it. We have a long list of possible future projects but, a much longer list of pieces waiting to get on the list. #1278 is not currently on a list to have any work done to it.

Hi Ben, Thanks for watching! The train sounds are from videos that we have recorded at the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in Nelsonville, Ohio. Many of those videos are located here. The dobro music is our great friend Richard Comer. At the moment this video is the only place to hear them together. Again, thanks for watching and please share the video to help spread the word about this wonderful facility!
