It's strange. The game almost feels like a MOBA grew weird crab legs and tried to walk into an Open World game. The problem is that it has to be compared to Saint's Row, and poor goddamn Volition is going to spend the rest of their lives trying to live up to Saint's Row.
@zybch7 жыл бұрын
Well they are great games. Well, not 4 I guess. What a lazy mess that was, talk about recycling assets... And 1 & 2 were just GTA rip offs. 3 was simply amazing though lol We don't talk about GooH I wasn't gonna buy AoM till I found out it wasn't multiplayer. Everything about it prior to launch screamed 'multiplayer' and I wonder at what point it was pivoted to single player only. Having co-op would have elevated things a lot, but I'm very happy its not just another loot crate filled MMOBA.
@skeletonwizard7087 жыл бұрын
I have a fondness for 4 that comes mostly from it being so damn fast. It's the first Super Hero game I've ever actually really loved. What killed AoM for me personally was not having any customizable main character. I could have sworn "you" were going to play the Director, not Persephone. But without any buy in like that, there's just not enough investment to overcome the milquetoast everything else (Ala SR4) .

The story of a Saints Row game that was barely changed to not be a Saints Row game. It feels like Gat Out Of Hell all over again, where Volition got sidetracked by purple halfway through development of a different IP. It's been six years now and they've yet to make something that doesn't feel like it should've been an optional game mode or DLC for Saints Row: The Third. It's making me want to just go back to modding Saints Row: The Third, actually. EDIT: Oleg and Pierce are in this game. That puts the final nail in the coffin. Volition's afraid people won't try their new IPs.
@greyXstar7 жыл бұрын
VulpesHilarianus Gat's in it too, apparently as DLC. Because you all love Johnny Gat so effing much you're willing to pay extra for him, right??
@zybch7 жыл бұрын
People won't though. More and more, studios are sticking with 1 or 2 IPs and dropping old and new ones because many gamers, especially damn millennials are stupid facile twits with the attention span of gnats and don't like change, and publishers don't want their devs to try anything different. Just look at Naughty Dog, Uncharted and TLoU and thats been it for over 10 years. Uncharted especially has been milked 2 games to many now. Spot on with the purple thing though, but AoM ain't no fucking Gat Out Of Hell.

I think the game looks kind of crappy...the whole aesthetic just doesn't sit well with me. There's colour, but it's not particularly vibrant or nice colour, and the world looks a bit sterile and flat outside of that. It's busy looking, with lots of coloured lights and particles and hud elementts and shit highlighted by glowing etc. It just all comes together as a kind of ugly whole.

Eh, I dunno. I never enjoyed the co-op in saints row games. The biggest flaw in each and every saints row was....draw distance! Shit popping into existence before your very eyes. The writing is horrible. I know that Saints Row didn't have the best dialog but at least it was funny. I never laugh once while playing this. It felt so force. Some of the characters backstory were interesting but It doesn't go anywhere since there are like two personal missions. The gameplay is fine, similar to any other third person shooter but mix with something like Overwatch were characters have one Special ability with a cooldown,one passive ability, and a ultimate that fills up by killing enemies. The open world, while it looks amazing (I seriously love the art style of the environments) is wasted on repetitive activities that are lot more boring than any Saints Row game. The worst thing about this game is the missions. Every mission is badly design and lazy. "Go to this place and kill everything", "Go to this place and blow up everything", "Destroy this enemy vehicle by ramming it with your weaponless vehicle" (Fuck this type of mission in particular). This is fine for OPTIONAL activities but for Main Missions!? Fuck off. The enemies were fun to fight I guess,when you compare them to Saints Row 4 and Gat Out Of Hell. The game features a semi-cartoony art style that looks good. The sound effects (Not the sound track, that shit is horrible) is pretty good, the voice acting for the most part is good too. And that's it. I give it a 6/10. I just want to fight and take out gang members with my gang like Saints Row 2 and even 3, not this.

The lacking humour can be attributed to the fact that Steve Jaros left Volition after Gat Out Of Hell. Say what you want about the direction the story took in the Saints Row series, but his writing is what gave the humour and characters in the series most of its charm. The fleur actually is there for a reason. The leader of M.A.Y.H.E.M. is a former member of the opposing organization, L.E.G.I.O.N. The organization has a strong Western European bent, and each of the various Ministries that make up the organization is shown to use a different take on various European symbols - hence why the leader of L.E.G.I.O.N. is called "Morningstar." Additionally, the leader of M.A.Y.H.E.M. is literally French. Given that the plot is literally meant to be an alternate universe take on Saints Row, this all makes plenty of sense.

Except that this is quite literally a sequel to Gat Outta Hell. It's not shoehorned in the slightest. There is a direct plot connection, like it or not. @VersatileKing137 жыл бұрын
BoxedFalcon the game doesnt get better just because the price goes down. Unless the devs make drastic changes thru patches or dlc it will still be a mediocre game. I guess it really depends on how much you value your time. Would you rather play a mediocre game because it's cheap or an excellent game at full price? I will always choose the latter.
@dnothstylez7 жыл бұрын
@JarvisTheBest "The game doesn't get better just because the price goes down" The comment was " *good for a buy* when the price drops", not " *good* when the price drops". Entirely different meanings.
@lwaves7 жыл бұрын
+JarvisTheBest Of course the game doesn't get better but it's value can increase as it gets cheaper. That's what the OP is referring to. You've completely missed the point. An excellent game at full price may well be worth it's cost but that same game at half price has a greater value. Same goes for a mediocre game at full price may not be worth it's cost, but at half price it is because the person isn't outlaying as much to get that experience. Bearing in mind that a mediocre game will have some attractive features to some gamers that may be worth playing at a lower cost.

That criticism is kind of a stretch, notice how the second part Jim showed didn't make a joke of Uranus? (Why even show it?) That's because the only Uranus joke really is the first one he showed. The rest of his points are spot on though, it's fun, but not overly so. And it's certainly no Saints Row, though I'm told this was originally going to be a SR expansion.

Also, can we talk about how Volition went from making games like Red Faction: Guerrilla to games like Saints Row 4 & Agents of Mayhem?
@lordxtheth26347 жыл бұрын
Now... I don't want to delve too deep in to things. I picked up Agents of mayhem based on it's description of being a super hero based open world shooter. I thought to myself "Awesome, Saints Row 4 with more characters!" So I played it and it was enjoyable. The tutorial with Hollywood was neat, and I had fun. Then the rest of the tutorial happened, and I pretty much did the same three things two more times. Then the main story opened up, and it was the same three missions. I then noticed something. I'm slowly leveling up, getting a skill point, and putting it in to single minor uses, and once in a while I get a slightly bigger boost thingamagig. I then thought to myself "Am I playing a MOBA?" so I cycled through the few characters I had, picked up a couple new ones, and realized then Yes indeed I was playing MOBA characters. I was playing an open world league of legends. It's as if the devs were in their conference room a couple years ago like "What can we to compete with LoL or Dota? Someone pitched these heroes in a Moba, and they got to work on it. Then Steam greenlight blew up with 90 Mobas all of which are riding the same idea. (90 not being a real number of mobas, but I'm just putting a big number there, because let's face it there were probably more.) The dev team saw this and were like "Well shit guys, we can't really compete with all of this, especially when we want to charge $60 for our game, and all these other mobas are free. What can we do?" one of the people in that meeting must have been like "Ok, guys, I have a bunch of assets here that were rejected from Saints row 5, but they're still good to use, complete with paint jobs and all" Thus was born the building of this game. A failed idea for a moba where everything is there. Characters with minimal powers. Power ups that effect them tiny little bits over the course of a small amount of levels, bosses that work almost in the same way, like they were more moba characters just with a few extra bars of hit points slapped on to give them the semblance of difficulty, set in a world full of Saints Row assets because they didn't have time to make new ones with only 3 or 4 mission types because those were the side (Jungle) stuff you do to unlock extra fiddly bits. They even kept loot boxes (which I bet in the moba you would have had to pay for, but they're asking for money now, and don't want an ear-full from 'Jim Fucking Sterling, son' on his review so they kept those free). Despite this criticism, I am enjoying the game. You know... up until the point that a mission marker doesn't trigger and I need to restart the game, and the mission to get it to load properly. Or when the game doesn't have a critical failure and crash on me. It's a fun little shooter. Its even more fun when I think of it exactly like a Moba, and all I need to do is grind out a few more gold before I can teleport back to my hub, and upgrade my gear, just to go outside, grind some more mobs, fight an opposing team's hero, and unlock my next character for free. I wish I had Saints row 5, but this will have to do for now. I also agree with Jim on his 6/10

I really hate this kind of fourth-wall-breaking self-referrential "humour" in video games. Failing to be funny and then pointing to that and saying "See? We know this sucks, which is why it's funny. Right? Right?" doesn't work. Saints Row 3 and to some extent Saints Row 4 managed to maintain at least the veneer of normalcy, which is why the crazy stuff stood out so much and the wacky stuff was so amusing. When your entire game is a caricature, jokes no longer work. What a waste.
@starkiller0077 жыл бұрын

Saints Row 3 was wacky and zany, but it was still ultimately grounded in a world where people acted "in-character" and weren't constantly breaking the fourth wall. For every absurdly stupid thing which happened, there was at least one character with dialogue to the extent of "Are you fucking serious?!?" Who that character was changed around, but there was usually one. This is the same approach as the Naked Gun movies. It's a world full of complete idiots and impossible physics, but the people who live in it are constantly surprised whenever weird stuff happens. Saints Row 3 had that, as far as I'm concerned.

Saints Row's baseline was GTA-style crime stories, which are already extremely over the top and ridiculous but pretend to be normal. The reason they got away with as much as they did was because they had something that's objectively really silly to be their straight man. My sense is that Volition might have thought they could repeat the trick with 90s Saturday morning cartoons as a base and they were totally wrong. (When you're not blinded by nostalgia, they're all really bad and boring, sorry.) Or they just forgot about those rules entirely and assumed people would care about something. "What a waste" is right on.

Nice review. The footage you showed when mentioning missing textures, it showed an incomplete reflection. You will notice this is the case in a lot of games, it is really, truly difficult to create real-time reflections and still be efficient when you're making a scene that has so many things to reflect. The common practise is to bake the reflections as pre-rendered textures as this can be quite realistic and works well for most cases, not so much when you have moving objects in your complex scene.

This being "an inferior but playable crackdown clone with some half assed gimmicks" actually makes me look forward to the sequel (assuming it sells well enough) considering the history of this franchise: In 2006 Volition released an "inferior but playable GTA clone" with the gimmick of having the gangsta rap dial turned up to 10, not 11 just 10, and everyone thought "meh". Two years later they released that game's sequel with EVERYTHING done better and had made one of the greatest open world crime em' ups in the history of this medium. So what I'm saying is maybe this is a sign that Agents of Mayhem 2 will be to this game what Saints Row 2 was to Saints Row 1?

This review makes the game seem FANTASTIC! 15 difficulties? I LOVE it when a game respects the player enough to let them hone difficulty to their liking and enjoy the game as they please. Jim says the cutscenes looked bad but the video of animation shown looked fine by me. The combat looked like a lot of fun to boot. It could just be that I lack the experience of other games Jim compared this to but where Crackdown or Saints Row had zero appeal to me...this game looks genuinely awesome. I'll pass on it though, Jim says maybe later and I trust his opinion when I'm on the fence on a game purchase.

Well, that settles it for me. The Volition that made such great games as Red Faction: Guerilla and Saint's Row 2 are officially dead and buried. Bye, Volition. You gave me great memories, but you're not giving me any more, obviously.

I really dig the Saturday morning cartoon style cut scenes. It's a shame there are not more of them replacing those static images through out the game.

I dunno, what did "Saints Row" 3 or 4 have to do with Saints Row. Volition has been disrespectful pieces of shit to the series since Deep Silver acquired them.

I thought this was a SR4 sequel or dlc thing from the screenshot. It sounds like they were working on it to be that and then just decided to turn it into a full game.

For me I was tempted to get the game considering it was set in the same universe as the Saints Row series and was even created because of them. But the fact I can't create my own character made me hesitate and after this eh I wait for a price drop to see for myself.

1992? Please, Uranus jokes were dated back in 1982! I know this because that was the year "E.T." came out, and they made a Uranus joke in THAT movie! That makes it at least... 35 years.

I need to accept the fact that Volition will never make FreeSpace 3 or at least a spiritual successor to FreeSpace because that Volition died a long time ago. "From our odyssey into Hell, we have returned with a gift. The Ancient technology to build a portal between Delta Serpentis and Sol. To restore our link to planet Earth. To return home after all these years. This is Admiral Petrarch, signing off." 😭😭😭😭😭

I don't think I'd pay more than about £15 for this, maybe I'll pick it up in a few months when it's heavily discounted and perhaps some DLC and patches have made it a more worthwhile experience.

Love the cut of your jib as always, but I don't think comparing the term "playable" for interactive media to the term "watchable" is very fair. The only thing a movie can do is either be watched and enjoyed or watched and not enjoyed, whereas there are so many different aspects to interacting with a video game (which are all basically just interactive simulations to some extent). Every second of your favourite movie was painstakingly handcrafted to be experienced in a single way, as you can only literally watch something in so many ways (I'm thinking one eye open, on one leg, upside down etc) I guess my point is that I feel it's both unfair to movies to compare them to an interactive medium so potentially deep and complex, and it's unfair to video games to compare them to a fixed, relatively short piece of non-interactive entertainment that you can only observe and so aren't able to impact negatively with mistakes or errors in pacing (which can happen to us all, nothing stings quite like stumbling across the impossibly difficult mid-level areas and quests in an RPG when you just left Hometown with your rusty old sword).

This video was significantly more informative than the usual Jimpressions format. Hope we see more videos like this. I usually just come here to laugh at the shit games (which is entertaining), but hopefully now I'll start to buy some games based on Jim's recommendations (which is hard to do based on videos which only look at the first 30 minutes of a game).

I had a felling that this game was going to be bad (or at least not be as good as Saints-Row 3 and 4) due to not seeing any company logo in the trailer to the point that I thought it was some cheap Chinese clone of Saint-Row games due the fact that a lot of the agents looked like characters from Saints'. I mean come on, Yeti is quite literally Oleg from Saints-Row 3 (and kinda 4) but a plain white and I also thought that his recolouring was a method to subvert copyright.

You hit the nail on the head with this one, man. Agents of Mayhem is super fun and all that, but there are quite a few areas in which it lacks. I somewhat regret pre-ordering it and not waiting a while before I bought it, but oh well. I mostly bought it to keep me busy before Absolver. :V

My opinion of the game was somewhat better than what Jim seems to have walked out of, and i haven't really encountered any bugs (well, 1, one time, that had no effect to gameplay), but maybe i've just been lucky. That said, can't really argue with his criticism, i think the game is decent, and i don't regret the money i spent on it, but damn there are so many minor issues that stop it from being great. But then i'm only about 2/3rds into the main mission (i've spent hours running around doing random content on the city map), so my opinion may change.
