Haven't heard those rumors but i'm slightly concerned by that term "going back to the original roots" because that could actually mean them going back to what made an entry like Saints Row 2 such a beloved game, or it could be Saint's Row 4/Dead Rising 4's definition of "Going back to it's roots"

Honestly, after Saints Row 3 and IV, it's really best not to expect anything in terms of story from Volition. How they thought going from "Serious, if over-the-top, Crime Drama with silly side missions," to "lolrandom S&M Luchadors" was a good transition is beyond me.

Hell, I passed the one where you had to follow Kenzie in the chopper because the chopper randomly stopped functioning, crashed, I survived, and somehow it counted it as a pass.

So Agents of Mayhem is supposed to have some kind of relation to Saints Row while trying to top Overwatch by having a single player campaign that deconstructs the Saturday Morning cartoon. I'm pretty sure that concept will be lost to a large portion of whoever is playing. Me personally I like that a game would have a single player campaign, in fact, I wish Overwatch had one so I could still play it in some way if and when the servers shut down. It's probably why I was so disappointed with LawBreakers. Fun game, but online only.

Well, as I heard it's not only a spin-off, BUT ALSO a reboot of Saints Row. From what I've heared, the ending of "Gat out of hell', where Johnny asked for a new Earth is canon. They even showed after credits him and bunch of other saints as some sort of police officers in this new world.

Can I just say: I beg of you PLEASE give Saints Row 2 a chance. I know what it LOOKS like on the outside, but there's a reason why many people prefer it over 3 and 4 and it's not just the slightly more serious tone but rather a better more detailed city with far more to do and waaay more customization options than 3 and 4. 3 and 4 are far more polished, sure, but at the costly price of an engine reboot. Seriously, give Saints Row 2 a chance. It's not the game you think it is.

Saints Row 2 had the best tone but it is honestly the most atrocious game in the series with how it handles, the gameplay, and the segments themselves that they expect you to do. I don't care for the story in Saints Row 3, but *playing* Saints Row 2 is just an exercise in masochism.
@GeteMachine5 жыл бұрын
@@lpsoldin3162 I don't know. SR3 & 4 do better with fleshing out the character personalities a lot more than SR2 did. In SR2 aside from Shaundi, the characters were very 1 dimensional. It didn't have a 'perfect' tone. It was just very straight forward. AOM though to me has underwhelming gameplay though which is even worse for a current gen game. Its all flash. HUD takes up the screen, movement is a bit wonky and driving feels sluggish again like SR1 & SR2s.
@lpsoldin31625 жыл бұрын
@@GeteMachine That's fair, thought I never said SR2 had perfect tone. I thought it had a better tone because it played things more seriously and less as a parody. I agree the characters were flat, but the plot it's self and the mechanics going into it were more interesting to me. It's more of a matter of taste though. I don't like the style of humour SR3 and onwards has. It's the same reason I don't like Guardians of the Galaxy movies. I'd rather explore that universe than to have characters making a joke out of it.

A bit of constructive criticism: I was interested in the topic of this video, based on the title, but I feel like it lacked focus, I found it hard to pay attention to what point was being made, and now that it's over... I don't know, maybe I was distracted by something else, but I'm honestly not sure what the verdict was beyond "this game's story is worse than SR3" which I already knew.
@dsandoval93966 жыл бұрын
No, I felt the same thing. The title is "The Art of Bad Story Telling" like they're going to go into a detailed (to somewhat detailed) point by point basis of why the the 'storytelling' was not good in the game. She did go over points but I felt she was all over the place in the issues mentioned, sort of like if all the info is there but thrown together in such a way one point she makes bleeds into another point she's making. So by the end of the video (I think) I should walk away and say, "So apparently 'this', 'this', and 'these' things were the issue..." And instead I can kind of pick a few subjects but am not sure of any defining points she was trying to make, unless I go over the video again, which I don't want to do. Kind of like a run-on sentence, all the information is there, but one point is indistinguishable from the next. She DID have a sweat voice.

A shame, when I heard that the game was single player I was relieved that it wasn't another game trying to be Overwatch (even though it would seems like Volition was already working on it when Overwatch was announced). Also it would seem like the game would have benefited of having more cities (something that Yahtzee pointed out when he noticed the map was kinda small) and it would have made sense storywise. Since (apparently) Legion already won why not have Seoul, or South Korea as a whole, as the last free place and then you move to free other countries and get closer to Legion's HQ for the final showdown.

The ark does not reset your progress, it reloads the kinda bland side missions, you can go to the ark without losing progress. Considering the sheer lack of couch co-op in today's market, I would have forgiven *a lot* of shortcomings as long as the gameplay held up. Talk about a missed opportunity.

Massive lost potential. Did the writer of SR4 left or sth? The humor is just...low, painfully low. Online hero shooter and single player experience differ drastically. Let's just say, Overwatch for example, got a story deep as a puddle, detailed as a bootleg action figure, relavant as ghost busters in ninja turtles. Is that going to affect game experience? Nope. However if a single player game got the similar condition, it's gonna make players feel unfocused at best.

It feels a bit like Crackdown 1, which I had been playing before AoM came out. It's fun to play but there's no real reason I feel like I should be doing this stuff. At least Crackdown just cut the fluff and made more shit for you to get into. Maybe that's why some Crackdown music is in there? Trying to be subtle? SR3 is the highlight of open world games to me. The over-the-topness just grew and grew from the first one (and I played them all in order), but things just lost it at 4 for me because of the whole "simulation" thing. Maybe it's just because I don't like superhero stuff, but SR4 and Agents of Mayhem went a little too far out of the vibe I felt was maximized by The Third. Hopefully SR5 becomes a thing and maybe takes a step back away from the superhero theme.

I thought a TON of the stuff this video said can be applied to at least SR3 (never bothered with 4 after that). I loved SR1 and thought SR2 topped GTA IV. And I would've enjoyed 3 if the missions weren't glorified tutorials.They made fun, varied missions in 1 and 2 just fine so they don't deserve a pass on that. Once it became mini game/activity time, it made me feel like doing any of those activities was just "replaying an old mission". And you constantly mention "the boss" in SR3. You mean the one that dies just a few missions into the game and then constantly shifts between characters until the Luchadore forces himself into place for good? Isn't there a better case for "establishing a villain" than a game where one of its story elements is the power struggle at the top of the enemy group? And let's not even get into the glitches; key items/enemies not spawning, enemy waves being trapped or spawning far away from where they should (or inside walls), on-rail vehicle segments ending with a random crash or spontaneous combustion...it stuns me everyone has such fond memories of this game when, regardless of PS3 or 360, it often felt like I was playing some unpolished convention beta, not the retail release. I mean, when you're talking an overstuffed game with nothing fun to do where you feel like progress doesn't matter, this game sounds like a perfect sequel to Saints Row 3.

Huh I guess I am the only person in the world that liked this game. I guess it helps that I'm not a fan of multi player games. I even play my fighters in single player 80% of the time. So I guess I liked it because I been wanting a single player hero shooter.

I wish more gamers played Saints Row 1&2. They would realize that the games AREN'T "GTA clones" but instead game's that stand on their own with amazing story campaigns. SR3 was basically a reboot for a younger, inmature audience. Such a shame what's happen to the franchise.

mrsaintsgodzilla21 I played them and the hell they weren't.

They were though, Design wise it was entirely a vice-city copy. It just had its potential with a story they failed to build around. Design wise SR1 & SR2 really aren't anything outside the stereotypical sandbox crime game. The series definitely needs a reboot.

I hate saints row 3 and 4- too much meta humor and a narcissistic self-awareness. I dont want to dedicate hours to something that doesn't want to take itself seriously and then shoehorn in some dramatic elements here and there without ever setting up a proper tone for it. Feel like Saints 2 did a much better job with balancing humor and dramatic elements.

Devine Interventions - Yup. Like, this is what fans of SR2 have been saying the whole time. Now Saints Row is so far up its own ass, the people that enjoyed the "lolrandom" 3 and 4 don't even like it.

But is it supposed to be a story-driven game? I don't think so. Oh and it's not a Saints Row game, that's why they even changed the name. It was supposed to be called Saints Row Agents Of Mayhem, bu they dropped it because it was different. And seriously, SR2 was the best episode not 3 or 4!
@planetschlock6 жыл бұрын
SR3 and wasn't half the game that SR2 was. I played through 3 and 4 once or twice and never so much as looked at them again. But I could boot up SR2 on any given day and get lost in that game for hours like I did back when I first got it 10 years ago.

Volition gets _way_ too much credit. Saints Row 2 was the only good game they've ever made. SR3 was alright, but it was nowhere near as entertaining, and SR4 was just plain awful. They dropped the satire completely in favor of stupid random jokes and the wanna-be Tron aesthetic was an eyesore.
@GeteMachine6 жыл бұрын
They really lost direction. Their better written games SR1 & 2 were obscure because they were creative and had no visual appeal. Nobody would have bothered with it if not for character creation. They were visually 90% San andreas rip-offs with less depth and more chaotic amateur gameplay. Then SR4 was the complete opposite and lacks actual direction for the sake of standing out to wow the meme audience. I agree Volition only did half of what they are praised for by a fluke. They said themselves a lot of SR1 &2 were asspulled scenarios the thought were cool. SR3 & 4 had asspulled scenarios that were just shallow pop-culture nods at the time. Agents of Mayhem is this at its worst.

I honestly think SR2 is overrated compared to GTA 5.

Story is ALWAYS diametrically opposed to gameplay. And gameplay is always diametrically opposed to storytelling. The best you can manage is to try to strike a balance on the scale that satisfies some people.

I wonder what part of agents of mayhem said it was saints row...it seems to me you went into the game looking for saints row and got agents of mayhem instead. And since you didn't get saints row you decided to compare agents of mayhem to saints row........even tho it's not saints row.....hmmmm
@KnukkleJoeShow7 жыл бұрын
Thunderbolt210 what part of it was saints row? You mean aside from 2 characters from the series being characters (3 if you count the gat dlc) with pierce's backstory being a retelling of saints row 1 without the saints, references to the morning star and aisha ( who sings a jpop version of bounce like my checks did back in the day) and the giant purple saints fluer de lis over everything. I haven't the slightest clue. On a more serious note. The problem is that I don't think even volition knew how much the wanted it to connect to saints row, if it wanted to be it's own thing then the references to the saints needed to be cut down by alot, if it's in an alternate universe of the saints multiverse, then you would think it would match the insanity levels that even saints row 2 went to ( especially given the satuday morning 90's action cartoon vibe)
@UltimaKeyMaster7 жыл бұрын
Thunderbolt210 The game looks like Saints Row, uses a lot of iconography from Saints Row, is over the top as fuck like the last two Saints Rows, it has *several cameos FROM Saints Row* and was plainly marketed as another Saints Row without the franchise branding. Dude, they made a Saints Row game with none of the love behind it. It's like Mighty No. 9, only nowhere near as catastrophically bad. Licensing issues aside, MN9 *is* Mega Man from a lot of returning devs without the branding...and it heavily suffered because it missed the point. Similar situation with this, only Volition could have made this SR5 but made a poor knock off of themselves.

KnukkleJoeShow system shock 2 and bio shock have very similar styles(not sure if you played system shock) made by the same devolper, even some of the characters are there but system shock 2 is not bio shock and bio shock is not system shock 2. Just because agents of mayhem is inspired by saints row and even has saints row characters.....DOESNT MEAN it's saint row. That's my point your comparing it to saints row but it's not saints row, compare it to the other squad based shooters but your simplifying it by saying it's made by the guys who mad saint row and it plays like saint row but it's not good because it's not saints row. The game can be bad that's fine but say it's bad compared to lawbreakers or battleborn or overwatch you know the games it's actually trying to be like.

Normally I dig your vids and value your opinions. This is one case however I can only shake my head in disgust. Good god is this a smear vid. The story wasn't great. However it was enjoyable and ANYTHING but complicated or confusing. It was quite literally just GI Joe (Mayhem) vs Cobra(Legion)... aka EXACTLY what the Animated opening of Agent's established. Not only did it do that but it established that Legion took over by SHOWING instead of telling. You are LITERALLY overthinking and completely misrepresenting things. You are looking for depth in the characters and story that isn't there. In the process you are making things confusing. You are also completely ignoring the fact that all the characters have clearly defined backstories and motivations that are developed in their own story missions... a fact that you conveniently omit as it completely contradicts your assertion to the contrary. That's assuming you even bothered to play the character missions. Also shit doesn't reset when you return to the Ark. Taking over a Legion Base causes Doomsday & Frac Machines to Appear. Taking care of Frac Machine and Doomsday Devices causes Legion to retake their Bases. So long as you leave the Doomsday & Frac Machines alone your progress doesn't get wiped and you can do all the story and side missions you want.

Getting every agent to super agent 20+20 you are completely right. Heading next to Friday's desk let's you see an impressive look into the personalities and histories of each agent. And for the major saints row fans, there are plenty of little references hidden in there, some revealed when seeing certain agents resting in the ARK.
@Lewis11157 жыл бұрын
Dialogue is given between agents when you are exploring, such as: Gat asking kingpin if they've met before, braddock and friday hiding their relationship from other agents, other agents moaning at hardtack for his singing keeping them up at night etc.
