Here we share how we change the behavior of ball pythons that want to strike, and how we pick them up. The behavior seems aggressive, but really is all defensive. We simply change what defensive behavior they do by covering the head.

A little tip I've learned with my new baby bp (who is horribly defensive) is to mist them. Very lightly, don't spray them right in the face but gently mist them. They will coil up and allow you to do whatever you need to do, whether it's picking them up or doing something in their enclosure. It won't hurt them, it just bothers them. Some snakes really don't mind but I've found with most ball pythons they really do not like water.

Mannnn I got my Mojave a week and a half ago and I’m a young teen (14). This is my first time having a snake and I’ve got a family friend who helps me if I come to face problems with her. She’s never attacked and all she ever does is move around the vivarium and when I take her out she’ll just try to get up to my neck where she likes to hang

Mine is pretty mean as well. For whatever reason he hates the sound of my voice. I can hold him and as long as I dont say anything he will just hang in my hand. If I say anything though he will turn and look at me. If I say something again after hes turned to me he strikes.

I've seen a lot of videos on people's pet snakes being extremely defensive and sorta aggressive towards their owners or just anyone in general, and these people have had these snakes as their pets since they had hatched or since birth as newborn baby snakes. And I just dont understand how snakes who have been with one owner their entire lives can be so angry and strike at everyone all the time. How does a snake just be born angry and stay angry and aggressive their whole lives when they've never been in the wild or have only been with one owner their whole life? It just doesnt seem to make much sense to me how that happens. Like, when you get a puppy and hold it and give it attention its whole life, they dont just grow up to be angry and violent dogs. I dont see how that same thing csnt work with snakes lol

My friend used to have an overly defensive ball python. He calmed down after a few socializations where I held him in a hoodie. He would bite the hoodie instead of me and get really jerky when I touched him. He got better when grabbed from underneath instead of overhead. He was just anxious. Once he realized we wouldnt hurt him when we picked him up, he started to chill out and got a whole less headshy

10/10 would not recommend doing on a ball python with a very strong feeding response. Bless her heart my 4 foot pastel ball decided that my hand was a rat when I did this, nailed me on my middle and ring finger, and didn't let go for 20 minutes (coiled and everything). She's usually not aggressive at all so I don't blame her, but it was just bad timing and she was apparently in a mood as it was the beginning of breeding season and she was extra hungry.

For hungry snakes, hold a smaller lid over the the bin you are opening, so when you have the bin slid out, you should have the smaller lid still covering the bin. Then when the snake is on one side, you can slide over the lid so that only one side is exposed and you drop in(or hold in) the rat in that corner. If you don't have a small lid available, try to encourage the snake to go to the back of the bin by waving your fingers back there. Once the snake is already at the back, quickly open the bin, drop in or hold the rat by its tail and shut the bin just enough for the rats tail to stick outside of the bin(not pinching the tail) and the snake will come back yo the front for it.

I've been thinking about getting a baby ball python, how do I determine their temperament before choosing one because I assume that any snake being handled by a stranger will not be as relaxed as with someone they know. My family are not snake people and I know if they see me get bitten by a snake they'll panic. I just want a ball python because they seem so relaxed and they're beautiful. So lovable too.

Hello! I have a question about strange ball python behavior (well, my ball python's behavior). I've had this boy for a while now, maybe 4 months, and he's never done anything like this before. He's been refusing food, burrowing under his substrate, moving all his hides back and sitting behind them, even getting up on his basking spot. He's usually not very active and prefers to sit in his rock but he's never been very active in previous months. One of my friends told me he might be having a mating season fit or something of the sort but I'm not too sure. It started around the middle of March, maybe it's been going on this whole month but it's been about a month since he last ate. Any advice or knowledge? Any and all help is veeeeery appreciated ^-^

It could be just growth, hormonal, seasonal type thing. It could also be that he is due for a good environment cleaning. I would dump/change substrate then go from there.

My corn snake rattles her tail off my face when I use a different shampoo, lmao. She's my baby. As soon as I go I. Get enclosure, she goes right up my arm and into my hair. She's over 3ft long. My bp loves my hair as well and whistles in my ear. She hissed once when I first brought her home 3 weeks ago, I picked her right up and told her i was mama, knowing she had a history of biting. Now, I kiss her face, she sleeps on me and never bit. Confidence is key. Your snakes are beautiful ❤️

I’m a new snake owner, and I got a ball python, he wasn’t always defensive and I’d handle him fine every now and then and now he’s become very defensive and continues to strike even when he just sees me walk by his tank, I started covering it up to keep him from feeling threatened but it’s gotten to the point where I can’t get him out to clean his tank and I can barely change his water, I’m absolutely not afraid of a few bites, I own parrots, haha- but I’m just afraid I’m not well “trained” enough in reptiles to provide good care with how much I’m struggling with him at the moment and I’m crushed :( I try things in the video and nothing works, I understand not all pets want to be handled and I respect that but it’s getting out of the way of properly cleaning and maintaining his enclosure because I have to play a game of chase or avoid the strike from causing me to spill his water change 24/7, the temperature and humidity is a-okay, he eats well and takes food, he has many hides and all his glass sides are blocked off, he isn’t sick, I don’t know what to do and I don’t think I’m fit to care for him anymore. He is an absolute darling and I adore him with all my heart, but I know that he needs someone with much more experience than me as he’s quite the character, I’ve handled and babysat ball pythons before, I’ve never met a bp with so much sass, and I honestly love him for it! I feel so bad, I wasn’t enough :( he’s got a real attitude, he’s one special snake, even if I can’t keep him due to inexperience, I know friends who have so much experience with snakes and ball pythons who would gladly take him in. I don’t want to give up I just don’t know what to do.

Just got my first ball python three days ago, and I love it. I've always loved snakes and never really been afraid of them except for one time as a kid when I fell down and looked up to see a snake about six inches from my face staring right at me. Other than that I'm cool with them, and always try to advocate for them not being killed in the wild. I know people who will kill any snake they encounter whether venomous or not, and that really pisses me off. I've handled pet snakes in the past. Not a lot, but enough to where I feel relatively comfortable handling a pet snake. It's just handling mine that I have a problem with. When handling someone else's I'm a lot more at ease and less worried about it biting me because I figure it's use to being handled. With mine though I'm nervous. I'm not 100 percent sure how old mine is. It's a little under two feet long, and seems chill for the most part. My kid's the only one who's handled it so far. I'll usually let him try to pick it up once a day. If the snake looks like it's taking a defensive action I tell him to leave it alone and we'll try again later though. I don't want to get off on the wrong foot and have it hate us, so I just try to give the snake it's space. I don't bother it when it looks like it's asleep though, only if it's crawling around it's terrarium. My kid's picked it up twice so far, and we'll probably try again later, because I want to get it used to being handled. It's so adorable though I could just sit and watch it for hours. Such a wonderful pet, everyone should have one.

I was given a BP that’s 10 years old. I think he had a heating bad before hand but I got him a heating lamp and he’s SO happy and SO active. He knows when I walk in the room and throws a tantrum if I don’t let him out. I’ll let him out and he just hangs out and he HATES going back in the tank.

It’s interesting watching this I’ve had my baby for 5 years and she’s so tame. She always comes to the front of the vivarium when I’m in the room. She lays her head on my palm bumping her head through my hand 😂 definitely a big character. She’s a regular morph 5ft and packed with muscle. Loves eating thawed rats not a picky eater I don’t even have to use tongs just straight throw it in there. For those that’s new to owning and having trouble gaining trust just be in the room and your BP will get used to your presence and will familiar itself with your scent. I can play music from my speakers and she’s chilling fine not agitated very humble creates very precious I hope all BP owners grow and keep that connection with their snake ❤️ Apologies for the lack of pun don’t crucify me ✌🏼

CONGRATULATIONS!!! HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY ! ! ! and I got to be with you! It's so fun to see and hear your enthusiasm, you guys! By the way - did you know that when a human baby is getting fidgety the same "cover the eyes" trick works with them the same way it does with ball pythons. After birthday #1 humans learn to avoid your hand or blanket or whatever and then it has the opposite effect. Perhaps that's why your bigger snakes don't buy the trick - they've figured out as they got older. SO. . . use it while you can - with kids and with snakes!!! Again: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY GUYS!

The way to get a snake to stop being so defensive is exposure. They are capable of conditional learning. That's all it comes down to. Teach them they don't have to be afraid of new situations. Ball pythons are one of the calmest snakes around. They're fantastic for educating kids on handling if you know what you're doing. Socialize them! It's really that simple.
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 6 жыл бұрын
But it is not. I have some that are very social. and that I take to schools, events, etc. I don't need them to all be super calm. Most I keep eventually calm (including this one is much better) with minimal handling. I have a collection of 80 plus. I love them, but I simply don't have time to dedicate to each and every one to make them like me. I am more concerned with there health, there function, there feeding, etc than how friendly it is. It is the difference in a pet vs a breeding operation.

Being bit by a ball python is kind of similar to being flicked really hard and then bleeding lightly. Not at all overly painful. But there was one time where one got me on my knuckle and a couple of hours after that it got really sore and remained so for about a day or two. If you are really worried about being bitten by one honestly a glove with a rubber side will do just fine. But if the glove only has one rubberised side ensure that will be the side on the top of your hand as I've mostly been bitten there. Only a couple of times have I been bitten on the underside of my hand but those were from the bottom jaws of said snakes.

My mom has 2 Male ball pythons, Ozzy who's a couple years old and Wizard who's a little bit older than a baby but he's small. Ozzy is a little longer than my arm. They are both in shed and this happened about a week after feeding. They're social snakes and are box fed so that they dont associate feeding with their terrarium. I love holding Ozzy as Wizard is a bit more skittish and easily scared into a ball. Ozzy is also a slow slitherer and is easy to hold.

He knocked his water dish over I go to grab it and he gets me ! Then I try to keep spreading the substrate threw and he was just in a corner striking every move. Just fed him today as well but I can just tell it’s not to happy of a snake. Only 600 grams
