I came to this video after watching your explanation on one of your other recall videos. I've been a police K9 handler for 18 years. Myself and the other LE K9's in the surrounding 3 counties (approx 9 other teams) meet weekly for regular maintenance training. My instructor/friend from Austria has taught me invaluable lessons and working with and around other dogs for such a length of time has afforded me and my family to raise some great pets and great protection dogs. I dont say this to pump myself up or to brag, I sincerely say this only so you know that not just beginners or people with troubled situations are tuning into your videos. Your balanced approach and proven methods are great. When i start to see a difference in your training vs mine you quickly explain your reasons and I realize it's just another tool to achieve the same result and although a little different it's definitely not wrong or "bad". You are the FIRST AND ONLY KZbin trainer I have seen put on a pronged collar and give yourself corrections in the hopes of educating your client and viewers. MUCH RESPECT for that! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. @@dustylong I have the same question! Is Chrissi the owner of the doberman and what did the vet say if so? Also, I recommend seeing a vet who knows homeopathy, there could be a potential for healing with the appropriately selected remedy. Note, I see Mark Lea also made a comment in another spot and so I am sure Chrissi and Mark Lea are the owners and that the dog is doing so much better with the new training skills and the awareness of possible inherited deafness.

@@ethanhayes9989 actually I’ve helped my own dogs with homeopathy. I have a Rottweiler/German Shepard that was reactive due to anxiety. Spoke with a homeopath and saw the effects right away! No more reactivity at all. He is calm and collected and I get compliments on him daily. Both holistic and conventional medicines have their place.

I was feeling for the owner -- just receiving the revelation that his dog was deaf. I adopted a 1-yr.old American Bulldog and, within a year, learned he was going blind. It happened very quickly. It was a beautiful journey with him, and he had a great life with my partner and me. But It was much different than the relationship we had expected... it required some significant adjustments for us. I hope this owner has embraced his new role as his dog's ears... it's a kind of sacred role to play. 🐶🐕

I was boarding a little Sheltie years ago. Turned out she was deaf. Poor little thing. Taught her sign language in the time I had her so it didn’t take so long to have her pee and poop in the mornings!! She was a wonderful dog!! And so much happier after we could communicate with each other.

Our new puppy is hearing impaired. And no, at a casual glance, you can't tell. It took us a couple of days to figure it out. When I take her to events for socializing, nobody can tell. And she is quite the social butterfly

Eerrr, no. Of course it's a punishment tool, it also creates a lot of pressure around the dog's neck. I can assure you a pop on a prong collar hurts. If it didn't cause discomfort and pain, it would not work the way it does. I advocate for the use of prong collars, ecollars, slip leads, whatever, I'm also honest about how they work.

I dont have an issue with prong collars and have under proper instruction in the past used a e-collar to correct livestock chasing( it worked and I did not ever need to use again ,the dog in question went on to be my rough shooting dog) they are just tools to do the job but must be trained to use them ,I will say that like the trainer here I used the collar on myself first.having owned Dobes for 20+ yrs and all of them been rescues or rehomes they require to have a strong leader,firm boundaries, plenty of excersise, some people dont realise that they are a wee bit more work than your average dog but soooooo worth it .

Very nice to check the hearing. My sister is Deaf so she had to go through a much different type of communication course when she got her husky/german shepard mix. Since she can't hear if he barks and she can't speak words they rely heavily on leash communication and visual contact to ensure he is never distracted from her as well as hand signs to give commands.

“DINGS (also known as DVDob or vestibular deafness) in Dobermans is a congenital (heritable) disease characterized by deafness combined with vestibular dysfunction that is expected to affect approximately 13% of all Dobermans.” Fenrir K9 you may want to pass this on to the owner. I have a friend who bought a doberman who had this.

Two things 1. Well, I certainly wish I had come across this when we had our Dobie/mix, he was an older dog we rescued. I was able to get him to calm down when walking past neighbors dogs (he loved people, hated animals). But I think it was because he loved me so much that he mended his ways. 2. Currently training pit/mix puppy and she is hearing impaired. She's 5 months and trying to decide on proper collar for her, esp since she has skin allergies. She's very sweet. BTW, there are vibration collars for deaf dogs to get their long distance attention. In training, hand signals are a must, waving hand in front of the face for attention or tapping them somewhere, at least that's what's working for us.

Great session. I have the opposite problem with my Husky. He was losing sight due to cataracts ( which we had removed, both eyes) when he was 6 yrs old. Only to find out 6 months post surgery he has Glaucoma. He is now 2 years on and now completely blind in 1 eye the other he sees light and shadows. So leash work is our main area of communication paired with vocals. He is never off leash outside, we cannot use a collar due to vets advice due to the pressure it puts on his eyes. So we use a harness.paired with a Halti head Collar. He is still a happy go lucky boy. But socialisation with other dogs is problematic and he doesn’t see bodily clues from other dogs, and they are completely put of because he shows no bodily clues back ( as he doesn’t see them) I have a lot of issues with other dog owners allowing their dogs to get too close too fast, I.e their dogs are off leash and run over to us and the owner doesn’t recall them. I have signs on his harness saying I am blind.but when the other owner is 100 feet or more away from their dog, they have zero idea who their dog is running up to. When he hears a dog coming too close too fast he instinctively lies down. ( not in fear) it is like he’s saying I’m not here to play. It will normally discourage the other dog from engaging in play. For the ones that don’t that’s where we ask the owner to recall the dog, or put them on their own leash. And we move on with our walk.

We actually had a doberman,he passed at 13 yrs with cancer,but when he was around 11 yrs old,he too had vestibular syndrome,the vet gave him steroids,and I think it was antibiotics,it all cleared up after a week,but I think it affected him for the rest of his time 😭🥰🥰

Deaf dogs can be great dogs once you figure out a communication system. My husband and I had two deaf dogs, a JRT and a longhaired mini-doxie. We used some ASL signs and some other gestures we adapted. They were great dogs! Kind of nice that you can sneak into the house with all your groceries, put them all away while the dogs are sleeping and not be detected. They never barked at someone knocking at the door or noises outside. Benefits of deaf dog ownership.

If you scroll through other comments, it seems it is not uncommon for Dobermans to have this hearing issue. The owners have both commented in other places and it seems the training helped a ton and they are using some different medications to help with the hearing. There is no arrogance or ignoring of owners with this dog, contrary to what one responder here has been supposing.

Hi Will! Lovely video, I've seen a few of them and there are always great. This one I find it really helpful for my particular case. I have 2 dogs, one mostly well trained, balance and calm, male already 7 yro, and a the little cookie monster super energetic and reactive. We have them on profesional training, however we do experiencing that reactivity to other dogs and she pulls and lunges hard on the leash, didn't think of prong collar for correction but after this I am willing to give it a try. She is not aggressive per se but she is very dominant and intense with other dogs, we are just afraid she bumps into the wrong dog and stars a fight. Thank you for your advice!

That's so impressive :o Maybe you can explain to me why when we're in town with the leash, my dog has almost no engagement with me and is very reactive especially to dogs and children but when we are in nature, he's always checking in every 30sec and coming to me if I call (but not when he sees another dog)? I have a 6 year old Dober Im a 5""'2 lady I trained him as I would have my big horse Abd also socialized him using beach Puppy day care He is really good off lead, recall I trained him using a toy I now use a prong collar only out but also have a front pull harness And when he is say on beach 🏝️ i let him run with long waterproof lead like k9 use. 15' Hes only scary aggressive at our gates or in my car He has a little sister staffy mix To play with really fun I dont introduce him out in public just cuz he also has my daughters 38 , unfixed GSD who he definitely dominates but plays really well

I have a reactive Amstaff. Shes aggressive with other dogs while on leash. Shes aggressive towards dogs and people while separated by fencing in our yard. So much so, shes ripping our wood fence apart to try to get to other dogs. Shes even bitten our elderly neighbor who tried to catch her balance by reaching for our fence. Our Amstaff is also super aggressive, often charging our storm door, when she sees anyone walking outside. Otherwise, she is so sweet and loving. We just dont know how to correct this behavior.

I was wondering if you could provide me with an idea on how to socialize my 18 week corso with other dogs that aren't as behaved as my corso. Every dog that I've tried to introduce my corso to they almost seem intimated of him. My corso is such a sweetheart and wants to play with everyone, but the other dogs aren't having it. I'm taking the socializing seriously and I am having a hard time trusting other people with their dogs and their manners just by seeing how they respond to their dogs reactivity. Man I need your help! I love you btw! But I'm having an issue with my female dobie and going reverse on her potty training! She never pees, but she will poop and eat it after being fully house broke and crate broke for 2 years. Back story, we got her and her brother from the same litter. They are a bit over 2 1/2 years. And we have a 10 yr old min pin. My min pin finally gave up his alpha status this last year to our male dobie, haha and Valkyrie is a beta or even omega haha she is so sweet, so damn smart and never aggressive. They are all spayed and neutered. She shares a large "crate" cut out under our stair case with her brother. It is about 9'x5'. And they are never crated for more than 4 hrs. She will poo in there after just 30 mins! I am baffled at the 10 steps back she has had lately.. I just need some advice if you have a video maybe?

Hi Will, I have a similar case with my 10 month old Dalmatian, less so with aggressiveness, but more so with reactiveness and pulling on the lead. I've been trying your techniques, but it doesn't seem to be improving, again its probably down to my timing and technique. I wondered whether we can arrange a one on one session for you to advise?
