Mr. Atherton, I don't know if you read these comments, but I just thought I'd offer you here my profound thanks for your videos. You are a BIG guy! But only because you need a big container for your BIG heart AND brain! I have learned so much from your approach to training dogs. This particular video with Bonnie speaks very specifically to our greatest issue with our dog: reactivity from anxiety- AND LACK OF LEADERSHIP! I am getting there, but the other members of the household tacitly encourage bad behaviour and prolong her anxiety/lack of certainty. This naturally slows down our training process, but she's smart dog and will get there. She's a 1 year old Irish Setter. Still, you always give me hope and reassure me of good training habits. I wish you all the best and will continue to watch. Thanks, again!

What do you do if you don’t have a Sully?
@DvornyashkaDiaries Жыл бұрын
Family members spoiling a dog/puppy and encouraging bad behaviour is exactly the reason why I used to viciously verbally fight with my family members to enforce a point that dog is mine and mine alone. So whatever I am saying and doing in regards to her is right by definition. Period. No explaining the consequences, trying to help people understand works here. People don't understand before really bad stuff starts to happen. So, there is my way and the highway is a best approach. At least in my situation in was like that.

I love how committed you are to making your doggy feel better even in the face of unsupportive actions around you from others. I’m sure you are going to have the BEST relationship with your dog. I LOVE Mr. Atherton as well as Victoria Stilwell. I spent untold amounts of hours watching that content and took Mr athertons perfect puppy course before I even found and brought my Aussie heeler girl home. The knowledge I gleaned from him as well as Ms Stilwell have resulted in her being so loved by everyone she meets she even recently sort of started a Wyoming Trojan war between McDonald’s and Burger King over who gave her the best treat. (The final prize was a whole 6 pieces of actual bacon…. Won’t say which place cuz I don’t wanna sit those embers lol) I really really hope you and your awesome doggy get to a wonderful place if security safety and happiness together. I know you’ll do it!!! It’s clear to internet stranger Joe much you love your pup.

Hello my name is Staci and I have a 4 pound Chihuahua and I just found your channel and I was wondering how much does it cost for you to train my dog
@busyhero2 жыл бұрын
If I hadn't witnessed that right before my eyes, I would not have believed it. When you jerked her collar, I thought, "Oh no! She's an anxious dog, that'll make her worse!" My jaw dropped when she started giving you all that relaxed friendly behavior. This seriously conflicts with what I learned about dog training, but wow... I am intrigued. Thank you for opening my mind. I have a reactive 8 pound terrier mix, and man, I do not know what to do about her. How would you do this with a tiny dog? She's been cautious of large dogs ever since I adopted her, but it's getting progressively worse. I wouldn't mind attempting to correct her behavior, but I don't want to hurt her or scare her.
@ragdollyally3 жыл бұрын
Will, you're a shining example of a balanced trainer and anyone who 'disliked' this video needs to seriously question their reasons because the former was an UNHAPPY dog, and the session left her HAPPIER. If anyone is so anti correction they they can't see or accept that, they need to think about their moral values. Well done, Sir, a superb video and just for the record, we aren't laughing about your baby talk reinforcement, not one bit! It works! Kudos to you for explaining so well because you're helping a lot of folks out there who are being failed by positive only trainers when their dog has issues. 👏👏👏

This is positive training though, despite what he's saying, he's actually demonstrating a very common technique that Victoria Stillwell uses and he's said good girl so often so I don't know why you view positive reinforcement with a negative perspective. It doesn't mean that you only praise your dog and shower them with treats, of course correction is necessary, no one wants a disobedient, fearful, anxious dog, but not along the likes of leash pulling, shock collar, hitting, laying the dog forcefully to the side. Positive reinforcement doesn't mean you let your dog get away with murder, not at all, not even laying in your bed if you don't want to, it's just about the way you achieve it, with cooperation and trust and leadership(yes, of course that too), or with excessive harshness, a bit of violence and really getting on your dog's nerves.

Thank you for your advice. I have two cattle dog mixes that had been lovely and well mannered with leash walking for 8 years, much like your lab in the video. After a few dogs attacked them, my one dog's mannerisms changed so much on leash, more akin to the collie in this video. I appreciate you differentiating between aggression and reactivity from anxiety and fear; I don't think it is a common realization but it seems very relatable to what I have experienced. This is what I am seeing in my dog in the last few years. With different attempts at training (positive reinforcement, attempts at blocking or redirection, all mostly leading to a frustrated dog more triggered than before) it hasn't been getting consistently better. Good days and bad days... Sitting calmly for a passing by dog is at 70%, success but walking by other dogs is barely possible without a strong reaction. We will keep trying though. Your video provides a bit of confidence that it can get better. All the best.

So I’ve finished the video, and I can’t leave any channel that quite like and appreciate without adding at least one critique if I can find one to make, so; I understand you wanting to let Bonnie “look” at the other dog as he passes by and makes circles around you and not correct her for just looking, however I would like to see you not allow her to stare so intently, I find that there is quite a difference and the latter should indeed be corrected. To summarize; as she is allowed to look at the other dog passing by, she should also be periodically checking in with and looking to you for reassurance. But all in all and on short acquaintance with your work, quite well done, superb indeed! Thank you sir for sharing!

@Trisha Marie Do you have heartache pains when you leave the house or when you shut a door or leave your dog in the crate or in the backyard? If so, you have fed her insecurity with a behavior that shows anxiety and stress and sadness and other emotions that, in turn, make her anxious. It is always good, when you first get your dog (most especially as a pup) to come and go to the other side of a door without any emotion whatsoever - without any thinking about the dog. Just go and do it. Even children have to learn to be disappointed sometimes and dogs are no different. We all must learn to live with life's little disappointments, and use our brains to figure out how we must do that. If you are anxious at leaving them because you are emotional over how they must feel or because they want to go with you, and you want to give in to those emotions, then you are showing an emotional instability that is contagious and they will catch it. We must do things in order for the end result = your dog's confidence and feeling secure to be alone for a while. Some dogs are meant to work with people such as a cattle dog, herding dogs, heelers, hunters, etc. Crate training with a Kong ball full of frozen wet dog food or ground meat with possibly organ meats inside is a wonderful distraction for your dog when you leave for the day to go to work. Providing other toys (nothing shreddable or stuffed or a squeekie whose noisemakers could choke them) or chewies in your absence such as pig ears, bullysticks, beef bones with marrow, most especially a cow hoof (or two) is a good method for changing that anxiety problem (whether in the crate or loose in the house, as long as she already has some house manners). Upon coming home, put up your coat, hat, umbrella, purse, briefcase whatever, change/take off your shoes, and then when you're ready to sit down and chill out a second, then you can lavish your dog with love. The dog needs to know that there are things you need to do, too. A greeting is a greeting, a hello and a handshake, or a simple hug, but an all out love fest needs to wait...your dog learns self-control and to delay gratification this way. Myself, I have just departed, saying "Stay 'n be good, girl/boy/doggies" looking them in the eye. Shut the door. Gone. I started with small increments of time, then returning saying "helloo" and check the house real quick (for any destruction), tell them they're good doggy if they were, going ahead and walking through the house doing whatever , then sit down for the love fest. This is all about learning manners and composure and being confident that you're going to come back no matter what you will always come back. I say that hoping that what happened to Hachiko, never happens to your dog ...from my lips to God's ears, Amen? Also when you're home, practice being on the other side of the door from them, for increasing amounts of time. From the get-go is perfect timing, but If you need to begin to introduce this later on, introduce it slowly so your dog-baby doesn't think something is wrong, creating more and different anxiety. Anyway, these suggestions are for your dog. If you love your dog, you need to look to be end result and the ultimate end, which is to do the best for your dog and reduce the anxiety. More often than not, when our dogs have problems, it is because of things that we have transferred to them out of our ignorance, or out of our own anxiety at leaving them and/or worry of hurting their feelings. If it were a child, you would just go to work and leave them at the bus stop, or drop them off at school, say goodbye, close the car door, and go to work right? How is it different? Everybody has to do what they have to do, and your dog needs to stay home, be a good dog, and not tear up your house, and not fret all day. Doggies have to take a nap with one eye shut, keep an ear out for the bad guys, and be cute when you get home. There's work to do, so you just get on the other side of the door and do what you need to do, so they can do what they need to do; that's it; that's all. Reactivity in dogs most always starts with us, so then if we can control ourselves, we can control how our babies grow up. I have actually found that there is not much difference in raising good kids and raising good dogs, believe it or not. You just "don't let them get an inch in the wrong direction, before you give them a good correction". Good luck.

This is great to see becasue it also backs up what Cesar Milan talks about with Dog Psychology.. He gets a bad wrap from so many dog trainer types.. and he is all about the eye contact before delivering reward/treat/food etc.. and how energy and calm, firm leadership is key to a balanced dog. .. I like that you keep talking about how the dog knows a lot of tricks and is well-trained.. and how that differs from dog psychology and behavior training.. redirecting the mind of the dog back to you as her leader.

Thanks for this! Not that my dog is reactive in this way, but walking beside me is still an issue. But you reminded me that it is OK to show leadership.

I just want to say thank you so much for your advice on here. We rescued a mixed breed Maverick 17 days ago and he was a lost sole pulling aggressive and not interested in toys! He is now walking beside us when walking with no pulling also he now loves toys😂😎 keep up the great work Will🙌🏼.

Thank you so much. My border collie used to be extra friendly, but with 12 month started this kind of behavior, and I had no idea how to solve it. Now we`ll work as you suggest. Thank you.

I SORT OF figured this out by myself. *Bragging* :) I have a female Staffordshire terrier mix US/UK. I am the third owner and she could not walk in leash at all when I got here. Constantly pulling and charging other dogs. Now she walks heal without a leash thru crowds and past other dogs with no problems. (I am less nervous then the previous owner and more self-confident which helps a lot) I realized that when she charged other dogs I had to walk back with her past the place of the charge. Give her a command like sit and reward her so her attention switched to me. Then we repeated the walk by, over and over and over and over again until it was corrected. I used praise more then treats though. I will try this with my next dog it is such solid advice. What I did different and I don't know if it's bad but when she started pulling the leash I stopped and I did not walk on until was at my left side, at heal, again. Sometimes I would walk backwards to apply pressure with the leash and then she would walk back. Now I can just tell her "walk back" and she will walk backwards and sit down at my side :) Very proud of her! I've learned the most about dogs, from my dogs.

I really appreciate your videos. We got a black mali 3 months ago, he was 4-5 months old and he was being "trained" to guard a warehouse, so he was alone all the time. We didn't had any experience with the breed, but we felt in love with the puppy. We learned a lot with the videos and we are very proud of what we achieved so far. Now our challenge is to bring down his anxiety and fear around other dogs. This video really showed us some beautiful tips to do it. I was looking to buy some Fenrir leads (slip and training) but couldn't find any in stock, any idea when it will be available again? Thank Will and all Fenrir team, you guys are great!

Am actually going through training a reactive dog, these amazing videos are so useful. If I can manage to dissolve my dogs (hopefully future rescue dog) anxious resource guarding, this will be my dream come true. Cheers Will, we are making progress after only a few days leadership training, absolutely brilliant mate, cheers 100%.

The high vocal inflection is a safety cue, from the leader it means we are safe enough to be happy and playful.

Love your videos, I have a border collie very timid, exactly like bonnie and was wondering how many times a day and how long you would do the warm up sessions in order to build our leadership relationship. Not toy driven when on lead outside and won't take treats. If you have any other leadership building advice would be grateful. Have a garden so can start there before going out to front of house then further.

You really do make a massive difference. I wish you lived near Norwich. I could do with your level headed training with my cockapoo, but as a second best I'm watching all your videos and trying to put into practise all your advice and help that you give us in your videos.

I have been borrowing a cutie Dog a miniature Dashound she is lovely, incredibly anxious and timid. I’ve been told I can have her if I want. When I went to take her she snarled and snapped 😙 I was like ow I don’t think I want to take her now. But I did, it went very well. Ideally I wanted a Doberman puppy 😂 but hay hoo. I’ve watched loads of your videos and learns tons. 😊 In the 9 hrs I had her we built a good relationship she seemed much more confident out and about. The quivering was much less and her tail came out of her butt. This is so lovely to see you with this Dog the change is great.

many thanks for this video. I have used the techniques with my 13yo beagalier and she made heaps of improvement in one session. she used to bark, lunge and nip other dogs whilst out on the leash, even though she is very good at walking on the leash. I suspect that it was out of fear/anxiety. I added one other technique - calm freeze (crouching in front of her, no eye contact, no talking, holding under the front of her collar until she calms down. Her eye contact is not great but is improving. I have a question PLEASE - should I pull her up for whimpering at other dogs??? A whimper usually turns into a bark but it sounds like a friendly bark rather than an anxiety/fear bark.

Also I love that you mention that you want to PUT the dog in as many situations as possible to see what triggers her in order to deal with it.. so many dog owners AVOID the triggers so as not to have to deal with them.. and it just gets worse and expands from there.. making their lives a minefield of triggers from their own pet dog in order to have peace.

Wish we had you when we rescued our 2 chocolate labs ages 4 and 5. No training, no collars or leashes. He was 130 lbs and she was 75 lbs. We took them to classes but we would have done better with your info. Thanks for helping so many others.

How would you approach this same behavior with a Great Dane? That lead correction is easy to do with a small/medium size breed, but large breeds are very difficult to give a tug/ corrections too. Love your channel!! 😊

Hi Will, I have just subscribed to your channel and am really impressed. Simple steps for great connection with our canine friends. Do you have a video on where to start training from the very beginning and the order of the steps that should be taken? Everything appears to be a priority and i’m not sure where to begin.
