I absolutely adore that you started showing (in the previous video) that Bonnie wasn't taking treats or play or affection as praise at first, so using it for redirection was, at best, ineffective. As someone who's still really working on my leadership with my dog, who has some similar issues (not really off leash issues, but the leash reactivity is on and off) more with people, positive only has been highly ineffective. And most 'trainers' are just obedience trainers, which doesn't really give those building blocks that you get from actual behavioral trainers. Much like you called out, just because my dog can sit or play dead or do something else doesn't actually mean they respect or are confident in my leadership, and learning consistency is a much harder battle than learning to give your dog a treat when they lay down and tack a word onto it.

Bonnie acts EXACTLY like my dog Sierra, who is a Pit Bull. People think she's mean and aggressive, but she just wants to play and doesn't know how, so she gets nervous and growls and snips. But she's such a sweetheart and has been so easy to train in other areas. I'm going to work on this with her now. Thank you!

​@valjeanelander5700 I advice against dog parks for a lot of reasons but most important, theres alot of aggression from other dogs in the first place. I think its best to ask someone you know and ask them to play with their dogs while you do your job. Again it seems like a good idea but I really think you should stay away from dog parks

Absolutely astonishing! Since I’ve had horses and dogs all my life I can read body language easily which is why I was glued to my iPad as the video played out. Bonnie is “communicating” the entire time. I LOVED when she jumped up on you and went between your legs, if that isn’t complete trust and joy nothing is. I’ve clicker trained horses for 30 years and there is nothing as heartwarming as watching that “lightbulb moment” happen. The light literally goes on in their eyes when they GET IT, when they understand HOW communicating works and it changes their lives forever. Anyone who badmouths your style of training is sadly ignorant and must be ignored, kudos to you for patiently explaining to them how balanced training produces the results positive only can not. Beautiful, beautiful work with Bonnie. Sully is a magnificent trainer!

Absolutely amazing! I got a little teary-eyed through these videos as she came out of her shell and jumped up playfully, then started playing with Sully. She finally knew, okay, I have a leader that I know will take care of things so I can just be a dog and play. I can only imagine the smile and tears of relief the owners had when they showed back up for their consultation and they see her running around playing with the other dogs! I have a new golden retriever pup who is now almost 5 months old, and your videos have been incredibly helpful. Her biggest battle so far is that she's so rective to other people and animals. Not in an any way aggressive way, she just thinks that everything and everyone is meant to be her next best friend lol. So on walks, she does great with heal and loose lead 90% of the time, but the minute she sees a potential new friend, she lunges and pulls trying to get to them and if she is meeting someone to say hi, she paws up tries to jump at them. It sucks because I would love for her to be around and meet kids and other dogs, but for kids she acts too rough with the paws in the face trying to meet them and for a lot of dogs she makes them nervous with her excitability. Any help would be immensely helpful. She's such a great pup otherwise, lol, and heck, even that isn't the worst. Side note: Sully is absolutely the best boy!❤

She wasn’ cowering for protection there, it was the equivalent of sitting down on your foot with back against your leg; pure trust and signal you’re now her person.❤️ Good job! Honestly, where I live things have chabged massively in the last few years. Scandinavia is the world capital of passive covert even, aggression. And amount of dogs owned by clueless people has sky-rocketed. So agression between dogs are as I see it, more times than not an expression of what the human is silently harboring. And when the dog is confrontational this becomes a great excuse for the human to unload, not on their own dog even, but the one already confronted. Seen from this very simple analysis the dog is doing a good job of listening to te owners energy and ”naming” it, so the owner can verbalize and idk get their outlet of aggression, which is absolutely horrible. The other type is the type you adress in the video for a bit, the owner is worried and at the initial close contact meet when those first initial lunges, growls and hyoer alertness cones forth, the humans adrenalin goes up, drag their dog away, essentially teaching their dog that was a job well done. I live in the city and do my best as an amateur trainer to help owners with dogs, working breeds mostly, who are overly anxious, frustated, reactive either to dogs or often times men, especially big ones, or men in uniform. I have good help from local friends in the neighborhood like our segway copper Mike who’s a dig handler as well and owns a retriever (and always has dentastix in his stash), local construction guys etc. But when it comes to the ”new breed” of dogowners now, it’s a different story. Often times it’s very hard to tell from a distance (so you can just ignore them) bc that’s how micro and passive aggression works. Sometimes their dogs are super happy at the prospect of a greet and the moment the dogs do get close they’ll say something like ”he doesn’t like other dogs!” And pull it away, even though it was a docile and curious 5 month old. All this creating mixed messages and strange tension. Working on handling all the signals and stressors and temptations of various city environments with a dog under these circumstances is a challenge. I do all I can to get to places with some alone space in parks etc to build tighr communication and trust through various games first, which I found to be essential to continue with the ”work”. Also to make work a part of the game, bc the dog doesn’t differentiate it’s all just rules of engagement and excersizes. I personally have much less problems with dog behaviour (even bad behaviour) than people behaving irratically or even outright threatingly towards my dog when we are not even paying attention to them in the first place. For an adopted dog with a history this can be sudden confirmation of al the angst they carried in the first place and bring us back to square one again. In a mideval town full of very narrow winding cobble stone alleys you need to take to get anywhere, it’s a predicament. I’ll admit it get’s to me as well, although I never raise my voice or hurry off stressed. I wish I had a foolproof strategy for situations like this. I read dogs well and because many others don’t (not even their own) they project anything onto dogs and people, and all of us have to cope with it. These are the individuals I’d like to see an e-collar on. Sometimes there are signs (like someone with a massive dog on a dinkt flexilead (!) or three angry salivating chihuahuas just asking to be one day bitten by an older large dog who’s had quite enough) Little dudes with pitties on leads 4 cm wide and only 10 cm long who look like they’s fly like a kite if push cane to shove, you know the type, dog’s cooped up alone alot and never off lead) That’s probably common in any city and can be spotted and worked around. The problem is when this isn’t the case. Another problem I have is after getting good results with the dog, great report and a relaxed two way communication, getting the owners to do their bit. Dogs differentiate between humans. And so many just wont ”plant the flag” and quite frankly don’t have gravitas at all. They want me to deliver the dog with new behavior to them, mission accomplished. And in no time they’re back to all sorts of complicated harnesses and haltis and collars for a collie. Disappointed I’d guess. Even after instruction and support, and initially training the dog by myself then the owner and dog. I do charge a little, but not much at all as I’m not a professional handler, don’t have the official diplomas etc. Not sure it would make a difference either. I love the work with the dogs and with owners who really care, are willing to take over. The rest just brings me down a bit. Dogs aren’t half as difficult to reach as people.

Sully's happy to play with her because he knows he's allowed to correct her if necessary, my boxer mix was the same. He was always fair but he would always do it when it was appropriate. This is one of my favorite videos of yours. We have a 8 months old black malinois, beautiful dog with loads of energy. We got him with 4-5 months old and he was kept alone in a warehouse, no socialization at all. We got him to have good socialization and be friendly with other people, but we are struggling with other dogs. This video is really helpful and I hope I will be able to apply this techniques and be successful with our puppy. We love him so much, but we were definitely not prepared for a malinois, he's our first dog. We will make him a happy dog, we just need to tune in and create a stronger leadership relationship. Most people think its a fight but the dogs are usually just reacting its mostly just trying to stop the other dog attacking them kind of a defence mechanism. My boy mush is so much calmer now around other dogs, he does need a bit more but he no longer pulls every time he sees another dog, only now if the other dog reacts to him so im now working on the next step while carrying on with this. We have had to separate our two dogs recently due to a large fight. I have been so scared because the fight was loud and it frightened me as I don’t like those types of things. In your first video with Bonnie, I thought for an instant she had hearing issues then realised she was almost shut down. It was wonderful to see her anxiety lifting as she began looking to you for cue's and having the confidence to check herself without correction. And to see her play...well that was a very moving moment. I have been helping with a young dog with similar issues to Bonnie. I also use my dog to help with his anxiety. When he is with us and when he had overnight stays, he was a relaxed dog, didn't chase my other animals, lay at my feet, stopped barging past in doorways, walked beside me and my girl etc. But all the training is undone when he is back with his owners. He becomes anxious, unruly and disobedient because his people seem unable to follow through with what I've shown them. Its a very frustrating situation.

Watching this I've tried positive reinforcement with my rommie rescue, nearly had him 2 years. I'm watching this thinking he needs the same sort of training, he's reactive to most dogs, though he now has a couple of dog friends. Unfortunately his biggest fear/reactivity is with people, he doesn't like eye contact from strangers or strangers talking to him. I don't feel he's aggressive he's just anxious. Though when I first got him we couldn't even walk past a person without him reacting it's taken months of hard work to get him to that point. I would love him to understand that people won't hurt him anymore. In the home he's the most affectionate little dog.

Ahhh so beautiful! I got my first dog of my own (grew up with them but never trained them) in March 2020 and I had NO idea what I was getting myself into! Hours upon hours of research and trial and error I found methods just like yours and implemented them. Bonnie reminds me a lot of how my girl used to be as she was very anxious, however once I learned to establish myself as the leader that is no longer the case! She is still shy but no longer anxious and even walks off leash beautifully (where permitted). This content is so informative and the way you explain things is just phenomenal! I don't comment ever but felt compelled to do so here. I love this! What I've noticed with many herding breeds is they are very bossy and feel the need to take control if they lack proper leadership. She reacts to Sully's movements and cuts him off or lunges to stop him. She reminds me alot of my GSD/heeler mix who acted a bit like her when I brought him home, reactive to dogs and people (somewhat) and very bossy and controlling with my other dogs' movements yet very playful. To those saying she is shut down and terrified through the whole session have not seen a truly terrified dog. She's eating, engaging, and even playing at the end. Her play is on the aggressive side but that will soften as she gets more comfortable with communication. I've seen collie types like this one more often than I'd like and they are always unsocialized or improperly socialized and lack a leader they respect. Again, loved this whole session. Great work.

That's really just how dogs are and how they survive in the wild. There's always a hierarchy with dogs and next man up. If there isn't a leader at all, dogs naturally feel pressured into becoming leaders before they have the required skills and maturity. In the wild a young dog goes in the back of the pack to learn from the older dogs for years. As lead dogs die of old age, the young dog then slowly moves up the formation until one day when they are old and wise they become the lead dog for a little while before they too die. A pulling dog is a premature lead dog due to lack of good leadership. Add that leadership and they fall right back into natural follower dog mode. Which is where young dogs belong, so they will be much, much happier..

This is exactly what I’ve been needing to see. I have a Jack Russell/blue heeler mix and she is very reactive. When we are outside she is in-tuned to everything but me. The wind, a leaf, the trees tops moving, cars, people, other dogs. To the point where I can’t even get her to go to the bathroom because she is hyper fixated on something else. I can’t take her out with my other dog because she will only go about 10 feet from the stairs. If I try to take her further out she will fight so hard I’m afraid I will choke her so I give up. I’ve tried a harness and she will wiggle so much she slips out of it and will run straight to the door to go back inside. I hope this technique will help me gain the control and leadership I need to help her anxiety when outside. Thank you!

I just added another husky to my pack of dogs making a total of 4 dogs, 3 huskies and a corgi because our male husky, the 2nd eldest, got over excited and scared the new one, and started implementing some of what I have seen from several of your videos, this video made me cry with Bonnie changing in such a short time from scared to happy. Your videos are giving me some great things to try with our trouble maker since the dynamic is changing in our home.

Oh my, watching this has given my hope. I have a springer spaniel who behaves exactly like she did. I dreamt once that she was running freely and happily with other older, bigger dogs. She and I would love to make this a reality.

Awesome sauce. When my Border Collie, George, is herding frisbees, he couldn't care less about other dogs. However, when walking (on and off lead) he's randomly reactive to other dogs. I am going to work with him on it exactly as you just showed.

This is fascinating Will, thank you so much for sharing this with us mere mortals!… 👏🏻 I would be very keen to see how she reacts with other dogs as well as Sully, who is clearly a very special pooch… 🤔 We have a new, to us, rescue Patterdale Cross who, to me, is much worse with the lunging and barking aggression towards other dogs. This is making it extremely difficult, especially for SWMBO when out walking with our new charge. He is so adorable in every other way, but this trait is vexing us no end up to now… 🥴

Absolutely beautiful too see the change in the dog and you are excellent in your craft. I just saw my 1st video of you today breaking down the Bruce Wayne video. I have 2 female Cane Corso Pitbull mix siblings. I have been trying too build on my leadership skills and have been watching Robert Cabral on KZbin. I will also be watching all your videos. Unfortunately my dogs attacked each other and it was terrible. I wasn’t paying attention too the body language and it went 0-100 in a second. They are both very powerful dogs. It all started around 4th Of July with the fireworks and Akila is terrified of the loud bangs. Sheba attacked her. I’ve bought shock collars and prong collars and have been super tuned in too them. I’ve watched hours of videos trying too fix this situation. Things are improving but that attack was horrific. There was blood all the way up on the flat screen tv and the walls. Luckily they both are ok. I’m doing my best too a make sure that never happens again. Other than that they are the most loyal and compassionate dogs I’ve owned. They love too play and with each other and the rest of the family. I want too find out why Sheba attacked her. Your a behaviorist can you give me some advice on what you know. Was it because Akila was acting scared of the fireworks maybe? I would appreciate your take on it. Thanks

Fantastic tutorial for those who think positive only is the only way. For me when i train dogs this way is the best way for the best outcome setting the dog up for success. Great stuff.👍😊
