Thoughts on this epic game? I will be uploading the best individual games from the Qualifier, and ALL games from the Best of 7 Deciders as players fight for the HC4 Main Event spots. I'll also have a video up within an hour (which i'll link here) which reviews all R1 results for those interested, and talks about Round 2 predictions. I hadn't seen Overtaken around much before, but based on his performance in this game and set as a whole, he's definitely on my radar now. I hope we get to see him more in the near future. In watching this set I couldn't help but think a Nicov v. Overtaken showmatch or set would be very entertaining to watch.

Hey T90, I do not have the time to watch this video right now but since you just posted it I thought I'd leave you this message here. I have loved your casting for I don't know how long, but it's been multiple years of entertainment for sure. I haven't watched every video since then, but I'd say it's darn close and I always find out about my love for this game again when I get back to youtube or twitch and watch your content. This set was so much fun to watch. Both players were on point, but Overtaken was absolutely dominant and calculated. I probably shouldn't say this, but this was a Viper like domination of a set. That's not saying this was at Viper's level, but when Viper is 100% he makes his opponents look weak even when they are playing well and that's what Overtaken did to Modri here. This was a joy to watch and I hope he keeps this form in to HC4. Play like this could do some real damage in the main event.

I concur. He read Modri so well. He has many new fans; and, while I'd love to see him make the main event, I have little hope he would make it past either Vietnamese player in the upper half of the bracket.

Yes I have that one friend, when a group of us tried to take on extreme AI in 4v4. He complained that he was out, and we told him to send villagers to our bases, but he actually had already lost it all. Doesn't take much brain to send just one villager to restart an empire, when you have 3 allies to send you resources.

The game was over when Modri did not take all his knights into the engagement at 22:58, imo. After that, it just snowballed and Modri could never really recover from being down in military.

It wasn't a coincidence on Overtaken's side though. He correctly guessed which fights he would lose and which he would win, so he retreated from the losing fights until he finally found a mistake from Modri that gave him a favorable engagement and he committed to that fight. That's great game sense there.

Monks are the hero unit of AOE2. No idea why they aren't in mixed armies more often. No idea why Modri didn't prioritize nuking them down from the first big knight battle.

@@corrie127 Yeah IMO he ignored them because with the spears there he knew he had no way to kill them before the conversion came in and maybe he thought he was gonna win that fight and be able to kill them afterward anyway. Even T90 couldn't tell who was winning that fight for a while there.

Modri might've been able to doink one of the monks if sacrificing a couple spear pokes, but I guess he probably wouldn't have got all of them unless sacrificing those couple cav. I don't remember the timing, but maybe it was too late to really prevent conversions.

Great game! There were two or three big knight fights in the middle of the map, that were the game deciders, where Modri made bad fights out of ones that were pretty even. Especially that first one, where he had scouts just for monk sniping and then had them run in circles before throwing them away to knights. To paraphrase DJ Khaled "Well done, you out-micro'd yourself."

After the set, when T90 started the rerun, Overtaken showed up in the chat and spoke a bit with us, rerunners. He is such a nice guy! Overtaken seemed genuinely surprised that people enjoyed his play style so much. I am rooting for him now.

in the star wars version of AoEII, monks carry lightsabers. I wonder what this would mean for holocron(relic) collection interactions. a scout trying to pick off a monk seems a lot more interesting if the monk is carrying a beam sword.

Not sure if you noticed, but Overtaken showed up during the rerun and hanged out in the chat for a bit. Seemed like a really nice guy and told a little about his year of military service, apparently he even was a drill sergeant for a while. Really enjoyed this game of him and hopefully he will do well during the remainder of the qualifiers!

Waller boi too greedy. He's a very good player but his approach was questionable for this kind of tournament. Even Hideout is dangerous for a passive/greedy approach when facing aggresive players. All credit to Overtaken, during the whole series he made look Modric's strategies as potato but in fact it's very hard to keep up with the initiative and punish it.

Their faster-firing siege protected by faster-moving pikemen is pretty strong. If you're facing a lot of archers and you struggle to hit them with your mangos, go with skirms--they won't be great long term, but in castle age they'll hold their own, especially if you anticipate and scout out their archers and amass some ahead of time. Also rams help distract archers and tank arrow fire.

For mill queueing you paid wood at the time, for a limited number of reseeds. Autofarm causes farmers to automatically reseed farms an unlimited number of times and you only pay the wood when they actually reseed the farms.

It's a rank based on their rating in regular games. The highest seed has won the most rated games, and got matched up against the 64th seed, the guy with the lowest rating among the people who got in. And seed 2 matched up against seed 63 and so on.

As old pros teach how to play, it’s easier than ever to become a pro (if you really want to, since most of us just want to chill and have fun). It needs a lot of effort, though. You may never become Viper level, but you can go to distance.

"seeding" farms means building them. Auto-farm makes farmers automatically re-seed farms when they run out and 60 wood is automatically spent on it. But in terms of the tournament, seeding refers to the rank that a player has and affects who he will have to face in the bracket; for instance, the worst player will have to play the best player in the first round.

This years competition is quite strong, whereas i believe overtaken will not see any progression beyond getting seated in the main event. But keeping an eye on his progression within half a year i do strongly advise since he might be an upcoming AoE2 champ that just has to get used to playing more regularly against the main competition as well as the current meta, or so i foresee it at least. Anyway, good luck to all the combatants and may the best win.
