They probably had separate cavities inside of the wood, or the yellow jackets are colonizing the ants nest like Spain did to the Americas back in the 1500s. Probably the ants are just swarming for their own safety, not to help the yellow jackets.

Like Chris and Gina said, I have had Goosie (The Turkey 😁) since Spring 2020 as a chick. As for the ants, they can kill a subterranean wasp nest. But I have not watched a wasp attacking ants. I would think this situation or relationship would be one sided.

I'm in Oklahoma and get the southern variety on my acreage every year - thanks to lots of abandoned pocket gopher burros. I've been stung quite a few times by all the regional varieties (including scorpions) and discovered if the vespula squamosa manage to latch - and do so as a group, they'll pump as much venom as possible causing pain and swelling for days. Their venom is both more concentrated and used heavily when the hive is under attack. The best friends on my property are skunks and armadillos that hunt the nests at night. If they sting me and I'm able to kill it immediately then the sting is not too bad and wears off in a few hours, but if it latches on then I'm gonna hurt a long while. My worst case ever was just 3 years ago while bush mowing heavy weed growth and the cutter struck the bottle neck of a large ground nest. Because of the vibration of the bush mower, I didn't notice I was under attack until it was too late and three had latched onto my left wrist nailing me REAL good! In a few hours my entire arm swelled up like a Chornobyl-grown eggplant and after 48 hours of ice packs, Benadryl and no sleep from the pain, I finally called the doctor for an steroid-pain drug cocktail injection. These guys don't quickly dive, sting and retreat like say the common paper wasp (polistes varieties) or mud dauber that I can shake off in an hour or two. No question, these guys latch on and pump their concentrated venom with vicious tenacity and you're smart to take extra precautions. In fact, since you do this as a profession, have you ever considered talking to a doctor to have a steroid injection in your first aid kit? My doctor gave me a steroid script and some epinephrine autoinjectors for anaphylaxis (for worst case scenario involving allergic adults or children stung on my property). It's worth having as a precaution...

Omg my encounter makes sense now. I had tissue breakdown and huge bruises that lingered for weeks. Not a lot of swelling, but the pain was right up there close to when I had to get skin grafts. I should have been prescribed opiates, but the pendulum has swung too far toward prohibition. I was awake for days using ice packs instead. Maybe my swelling was controlled by the constant icing? The ER doc said I should get an epipen since I was stung so many times

I didn't know about the pheromone marker scent; I guess that's where any/all sweetness in the species goes, because it sure af isn't in their behavior! Honeybees' alarm pheromone smells a bit like bananas, but their nesting pheromone ('Hey, guys; home is here!') smells like lemongrass. Your chooks seem quite pleased with your offering of fresh larvae; I love the happy, contented sounds they make.
