Something I just wanna point out: Tadano is the BEST person in the series, his and Retsuko’s relationship didn’t work out and there was no bitter resentment, no toxicity from either. Tadano being Haida’s wingman when Haida was trying to get with Retsuko was a sign of healthy Ex-BF attitude. Tadano has ALOT of power and could ruin Retsuko’s life but he doesn’t. Tadano put his feelings about marriage and kids out in the open and Retsuko was open with her feelings. That’s HEALTHY and Retsuko needed that

I thought the biggest issue was that Haida did reveal his feelings at the end of season one and she rejected him. I WANT TO MENTION!! When Haida goes after Retsuko and 'musically yells at her' it's not actually bad. It's actually a REALLY good thing he did that, because retsuko was cooped up in her room scrolling through hate comments about her, which is an act of self harm. What Haida did, was drag her out of the house and into a place she enjoys and in comfortable in. She was clearly shutting everything down which is what people who self harm or are in a depressive episode often do when someone is trying to help them. He then keeps talking to her to get a rise out of her. He even says that she can yell at him all she wants, because then its at least talking about her feelings. Which she NEEDS TO DO TO HEAL. On the surface this may seem like a bad thing to do. But in reality, as someone who has literally gone through this multiple times, he did exactly the right thing. This scene actually made me love Haida because it really showed how much he was there for her.

I think Just Stop explained it best, how what he did would normally be seen as detestable...if it weren't for him knowing, probably more than most, that trying to ease into the topic would only lead her to building up her walls even higher than they were post-assault, practically backing her into a corner so she doesn't have room to run further from reach
@TomSketchit Жыл бұрын
Ben Diskin, Haida's voice actor, gave a really good breakdown of the scene in a podcast interview about season 3. Basically, what he said was 1) Retsuko's go to method to feel better is to scream about her problems, so isolating herself and shutting down was not good for her, 2) Haida is a bit of an idiot and so his go to method to fix a problem can be kind of stupid but somehow still work (the analogy he used was dressing up like the Fonz and smacking a broken television to get it to turn on), and 3) that this only worked because of these quirks of their character and that he does not at all recommend screaming at your friends when they are feeling down about traumatic events.
@kn-jt9dj Жыл бұрын
I kind of disagree The problem i have with the finale is that it focuses more on the other characters _talking_ about Retsuko's trauma rather than dedicating enough screentime on how it actually affected her: we barely get any time to see Retsuko really _react_ to anything She faints, Inui asks Haida about his decision between her and Retsuko, Retsuko has a nightmare dream sequence personifying her current emotional state, then we cut back to the other characters talking about her situation where Washimi tells Haida that Retsuko needs more time, Gori reveals that Retsuko and Haida are 100% compatible, and then Haida drags her to the karaoke bar where she finally spills her guts and recovers from her trauma: all in the span of like 20-25 minutes Ultimately, I have a hard time really buying that Haida saved Retsuko from her own self-destruction because we didn't really _see_ Retsuko's self-destruction, so the urgency in the situation gets tanked and Haida's reaction can come off as unwarranted when even Ton was more classy when he tried to help Retsuko out in her relationship, which is why I'd wager that most people saw his behavior as abusive rather than helpful even if the show demonstrates that its the latter. It's mostly tell and very little show, which i think is unfortunate due to the pacing Maybe if the finale was an episode longer it could've fleshed out these ideas a little more That's my take though
@TomSketchit Жыл бұрын
@@kn-jt9dj Yeah, I suppose an issue with the show is how short both the seasons and episodes are. They have big ideas, but never enough time to really flesh them out, so a lot of these arcs get terribly rushed.

@@TomSketchit Screaming at your friends in not what I meant. Obviously that part is specific to this scene and the context of the show. The part that is good is basically dragging your friend away from the area or situation that is making the problem worse (Retsuko making herself feel worse by locking herself in her room and scrolling through hate comments), bringing them to a place that is safe and comforting ( Taking her to karaoke), and getting them to stop shutting down and actually talk about there feelings. (Hairda did this by yelling at Retsuko until she blew up at him. It worked but I agree that this is not a good method. This only worked because Retsuko works through her issues through screaming death metal, and the only way to get her to that point was to make her mad.) A lot of people and friends may require more gentel methods to get them to open up and others may require more aggressive means. (this does not mean yelling, or physical violence. Then season 4 happens and you know all that interaction and character chemistry I was talking about? @jack0f4lltrades28 Жыл бұрын
Haida was undoubtedly one of the most relatable characters in season 1, everyone who mentioned Aggretsuko would bring up the scene of Haida lying down in the rain, regretting his inability to take action. A lot of people have been there, it hurts. But in the end, he gains the courage and he takes his shot. He's taking a step forward, this is development. The Christmas special hits with a hard truth, she says no. He is hurt, but accepts it. And in season 2, it's obvious he still has feelings for her but he's taking small steps. How much does it know about Restukko? Not much outside of work, so he takes the approach to be her friend. This is good. Season 3, Haida becomes the secondary protagonist. He has the opportunity to move on, and finds it difficult to move on from Retsuko. Even gets a talk with her ex that maybe it's for the best he move on with his life. Fenneko even gives the same advice, move on. Stop crushing on her. And he does. But to his love interest, it's clear he still has a thing for her. Even if they are just friends, he really really cares about her. He takes a huge risk and chooses the possibility of being with Retsuko over moving on, and it hurts. But even the love interest understands, she loves Haida but he doesn't love her. He likes the idea of a relationship, but it's clear his body language shows he doesn't love her. And in the season 3 finale, he takes the ultimate step to pick Restuko up. This is it, the peak of their relationship. They can become closer friends, it's hinted they will take the next step as friends to get to know each other more, because the dating app does show they actually have a lot in common. Then season 4 steps in :/ I don't know what happened. New writers maybe? Haida has taken leaps backwards, instead of moving forward he is... scared of being the lesser interest because of Tadano? Relatable but the execution is very cringy. Then they both take the next step to admit they like each other... which Retsuko should know since he asked her out back in season 1, but I get it. Haida being insecure and wimpy isn't comforting that he would be a good partner. But then the show speeds up to them dating, wahh? Why? This is what the show has been building up for, why fast forward through it? I thought this was the expected reward where we the audience would be shown whether they are a solid couple or not. And the rest of the season is just messy when focusing on their relationship. Are they dating by the end? It isn't clear. He's not worming there anymore, what happened? We had 3 seasons of solid 10/10 content but... ehh.

What makes this ship worse (that wasn't mentioned in the video) is that according to the christmas special, Retsuko rejected Haida's attempt to ask her out. For me, the ship died right there and then. I was sad, but okay in the beginning as you can pine for someone for years and the other person can just never be interested. By the end of the special, with the two of them hanging out for christmas, that was when it clicked that these two are end game. This was going to be a "will they, won't they" thing and it dragged down the rest of the show. Everything after that was just a bunch of adults stripping Retsuko of her autonomy regarding her decisions with Haida.

The issue with Haida is that he’s codependent. He has virtually no self-esteem of his own, and what’s getting him through life is his crush on his best friend. Basically he’s using her emotionally the way she used Resasuke (the bland one). Except instead of realizing that it’s all in his head and and moving on like she did, he’s realizing that she might ACTUALLY be the one. And it freaks him out. Because again, he has no self-esteem and thinks he isn’t good enough for anyone. This isn’t the basis for a cute relationship, it’s one step above from being an incel. Haida is so toxic to himself that it’s starting to affect other people, bc those people care about him and want him in their lives. He’s an anxiety-riddled mess, but he is also kind, supportive, and responsible. He has good points but he can’t see them for shit.

What I really hate about their relationship is that it feels like it only happened because Haida finally wore Retsuko down enough for her to want to go out with him. She straight-up rejects him in the Christmas special between seasons 1 and 2. That should've been it. And while I can see how him confronting Retsuko at the end of season 3 as a good way to get her out of her self-destructive doomscrolling, the romantic declaration part of it does feel like he's leveraging her trauma to make her like him more, intentionally or not. And I wholeheartedly agree that Tadano deserved better. Retsuko asserting what she wants through metal is cool and all, but the whole marriage and kids thing should have been a discussion, not an ultimatum. He didn't even get to explain why he didn't want kids.

Tadano, Inui, they both seem really ironically flat in order to push Haida as endgame despite him wearing her down.

I think you hit the nail on the head for what I was feeling about Retsuko and Haida. I wasn’t the biggest fan of how the ending of season 3 played out. I found that thing with Tadano kind of interesting? Like it shows that even if you get along and click with a person, if your fundamental goals don’t align, it’s better to just go separate ways. Tadano doesn’t need to explain why he didn’t want kids or believe in marriage just like Restuko doesn’t need to explain why she does want to get married and have kids. They want fundamentally different things. So instead of compromising what they want, they can go find someone whose goals line up with their own.
@Sparksly_ Жыл бұрын
@@missing_name It's true, neither of them is owed an explanation. My problem with how the Tadano thing played out I think more stems from Retsuko's inability to express her feelings in a healthy and constructive way. She either says nothing or explodes with rage, and while I get that's what the show is about, there doesn't seem to be any work towards her learning how to move past that and develop better coping mechanisms (I haven't seen season 5 yet, so I don't know whether anything's changed in that regard). Also, they're in their mid-twenties. They have plenty of time to reevaluate their life goals. I'm right around Retsuko's age, and I think she was being a bit melodramatic.
@jasperjazzie Жыл бұрын
@@missing_name yeah, i agree, having kids is just not something you can compromise on, not like you can have half a kid...so someone would end up being unhappy there if it went further i do think retsuko should have had a discussion, and had it sooner, but still i think all considered she handled it well

The Haida x Retsuko ship was forced because that's what the fans wanted. I still don't think they're a good match. Tadano was a better choice for Retsuko. And Inui was a better choice for Haida. She actually gave a f*ck about him.

Just rewatching the show rn and I noticed that Hyda doesn’t even show direct romantic interest until retsuko directly asks him what he’d do in a hypothetical of if they were married. Like, while yes, he liked her for 5 years and never did anything, it was because he got the message that it was a friendship and nothing more would come of it. And tbh I respect that. Only once retsuko brought up marriage to him, did he start considering the possibility that she was interested in him. Which is when he starts showing interest back coyly because he’s still not sure how she feels. After all, it was a hypothetical. He’s testing the waters and she’s giving mixed signals.

Having just finished Season 5, it seems as though Sanrio listened to the criticisms from Seasons 3 & 4 and actually attempted to rectify a few things with Haida and Retsuko. Outside of Haida's big dumb moment from the first 2 episodes, it seemed like they were FINALLY at a point where the relationship could move forward honestly, naturally progressively. By no means were they perfect in this season, but for the first time, you could see how much trust the 2 of them had in each other and how they were actively working, pushing & encouraging one another. They finally stopped doing the will-they, won't-they nonsense, came right out and said they're a couple and they're living together, Deal With It. Haida in particular took way less shit this season and THANK GOD... Season 4 felt like it went overboard on that point. Like, even before the window-dressing, it felt like the whole season was set up to make Haida look horrible. In Season 5, it was actually nice to hear Retsuko affirm that she wants a nice, quiet, simple relationship with him. Plus it was so much better to see Haida FINALLY move past his insecurities with Retsuko; it opened the door for the show to focus on other relationships to help push the plot forward rather than being stuck on theirs.
@EeveeFlipnoteStudios Жыл бұрын
Yeah, this comment reflects my thoughts too. I still am not a fan of the Haida/Retsuko ship and the whole mess that led up to the point. But in S5 all things considered, it was... ok. I like that they were actually written like a couple and had to deal with adult relationship problems, situations, etc. It got me invested, I think the first half of S5 was the strongest writing. I guess the problem for me is... the relationship they have in S5 doesn't fully feel like them, them. I still don't fully understand what Retsuko likes about Haida..? Or what he likes about her, for that matter. She wants a nice quiet life together-- that's sweet, but I don't understand why. Narratively, it's as though any other couple could fill the shoes Retsuko and Haida wear in the story. The way they got together didn't have that much chemistry, and I cannot comprehend the leap from S3-S4 Retsuko and Haida's messy miscommunication and fumbling over drama to the sudden calm, stable trust they have in S5. Being generous, I guess the Haida-being-homeless arc was supposed to bridge the gap... but it still circles back to that I don't understand WHY Retsuko is so invested in this particular relationship that she's willing to work so hard for him. I liked what the show was putting down, they had cute moments and I still liked the messages they wanted to put out with that arc, but it's just too late for me to care about "Haida and Retsuko" as a "ship" specifically.

Yeah I was really confused as to why this video came out after season 5 but only talked about it for like less than 30 seconds. Season 5 I thought was a really nice progression for their relationship maturing. He moves in and does some domestic stuff/cooking for her that she really likes. They navigate each other's family dynamics and become accepted. Haida supports Retsuko's desires to make her voice heard over his own family's political dynasty and turns down a bunch of money from them. And truthfully, what I think is really sweet and cute, just the little touches of seeing Retsuko rage on her candidate bus while Haida plays guitar
@kittah4 Жыл бұрын
Just watched Season 5, and I didn't really feel it redeemed the ship. Besides the handful of cute moments, I didn't really feel any spark between them, any tenderness, it felt more like inertia than genuine love interest. The fact they married by signing a piece of paper that was basically shown as a montage ancillary to the plot basically sums up their entire relationship, ie paper-thin with no emotional value.

Actually, there is a christmas special after season one where they show us what happened after Haida's confesion at the hospital. He got rejected by Retsuko, who told him they could still be friends. I actually relate to Haida a lot, which is why I like him. It's hard to suddenly try and stop having feelings for someone, especially one you've been crushing on for 5 years. Even harder to try and get with a girl that's into you, that you're not 100% into yourself. However, I personally think the series would've been stronger had Haida and Retsuko not gotten together (I personally think Fenneko would've been a better match for him, since she's gone to great lengths to keep his self-esteem from hitting rock bottom, but that's just me). It would have been cool seeing Haida come to terms with his situation and start being the best friend he can be for her, instead of the best boyfriend. Could've been a good message to hit home for people that struggle with moving on.

I love pretty much everything about the series, except for the two of them together. ....Also I'm still mad that they reduced Fenneko's role so heavily. In the original shorts before the anime, Fenneko was Retsuko's backup. She even played guitar and had a aymbol painted over her eye during the Rage moments.

I remember being stoked back in Season 1 when Retsuko actually Rejects Haida's confession, cause I foolishly thought the show was going to explore the avenue of Healthy Non-same-sex Friends. Like, have Haida realize that even if he never quite loses "liking" Retsuko, he can still move on and do other things with his life, and she can still be a comfortable, positive presence within it without having to obsess over her. Aggretsuko would have been PERFECT to explore the fact that sometimes romances don't work out, but you can still have a healthy relationship with those involved, even in close proximities like at work. The show does this with Tadano later, but Haida could have been an earlier example of an adult work relationship that semi-continuously deals with it. That's something animation, let alone anime, almost never represents. And then he just keeps pining, for Seasons. No progress, all status quo or regression. Personally my biggest letdown of an otherwise fantastic show.

Haida didn't go to "help" Retsuko after she got attacked until an app told him a relationship with her is still possible. Plus, Retsuko actually already told him she just sees him as a friend and doesn't want a relationship with him. It's... not a good look, like he doesn't really care about her, more is just obsessed if that makes sense. And as a side note, I say "help" because aggressively yelling at Retsuko to get over it like 10 days after something super traumatic happened isn't the way to support a trauma victim... While telling her to not let the attacker win is good advice, I'd do it a lot more gently and after a lot more time.

Legit Haida is frustrating as fuck. At some point I kept waiting for Fenniko to just ask him out and they have the more interesting relationship because they have actual chemistry. Would they have eventually ended things because of his lingering feelings for Retsko? Maybe. You know what though? That's interesting! It's conflict, it makes you want to see if they will or won't stay together because of that lingering question. Yeah it's cliche but when done right, it's a good one. Haida is shown to be Retsko's match because he has a thing for rock and roll. That's it, and while it's cute to see them do a scream song together, there's not much else outside of Fenniko and work that ties them together. We need more, something that makes us see he's supposed to be the one outside of just "writers say so".

I think there is a big possibility Haida was written to have BPD. The Japanese creators admitted that Haida is written to be relatable to a female audience. Often females are the only ones in the media to be shown to have BPD, even though men are just as likely to suffer from BPD. Aggretsoku pushes the boundaries of how far they will take things psychologically. This season especially showed that they could have written Haida to have those personality traits. As a man with BPD I find Haida to be more relatable to me than someone like Rebecca from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. That scene were Haida admits why he fell for Retsuko is exactly how someone BPD can develop a favourite person. Btw I mean borderline personality disorder not bipolar disorder.

But as you said, Haida did nothing, he put no work. Also Retsuko had NEVER in the entire show showed ANY sign of romantic interest in him, even straight up rejected him once and that should have been a good sign for Haida to finally move on. Their couple has NO chemistry or build up(LIKE MUTUAL INTEREST for example). But the show just ignored Retsuko's feelings(or lack of thereof) and gave her to Haida like a good boy trophy. That's just upsetting.

I binged the whole show a year or two ago and it irked me as soon as it happened, so I'm unsure if he ever cleared that part up specifically, but it was super infuriating 'cause Haida's always been the most annoying character in the show (in my opinion.) Whether it be the fact that he can't keep his emotions in check or the fact that that he always backtracks in his development, I really just can't understand why people like him. Retsuko keeps shutting people off, that's her main characteristic. She's doing that to live up to the mature, capable adult ideal she set for herself. This led to her not communicating her feelings, bottling everything up and lifting some of her frustration through karaoke. Through the seasons we see how she becomes more and more comfortable communicating with others through her singing. Haida KNOWS that Retsuko would just keep falling deeper and deeper because she always, always shuts everyone off. No matter how long she's left alone, she would not be able to get out of the pit she's in. That's not what Retsuko needs. So Haida takes her to the place he knows she can be herself and tries to reach out to her the way he knows and what they share: through music. Alright, no one can defend S4 and that slap...

Haida just didnt work for me when the show made him do the exact same thing that the creepy stalker did, he started following and stalking Retsuko and watching her "from afar" to her concerts, and since he was stalking her he was also present when she was attacked while walking home. I'ts very disturbing to have the same action both critized but romantized. Also the ending when he belittles her is not the solution, women do need to feel safe and supported after an attack like that. Season 4 just made it concrete they dont work together at all, Retsuko deserves so much better than an indecisive, slacker and stalker hiena.

It reminds me a bit of Yumi's Cells. in both series the main characters grow and develop through each of their relationships. One Yumi's Cells did differently though was it didn't introduce the end game until the end of the series. So each guy she is with as the series goes feels like they could possibly be endgame. So there is no will they won't they going on. However because he isn't introduced until the very end, even though he is likeable, it felt a bit like he was just some random guy who showed up and snagged her in the end, cause he was I guess. Perhaps if he started off as a background character and slowly became more prominent until becoming a main character at the end might have worked better. Anyway just some pros and cons about a different way the relationship could have been handled I guess. I also feel like Aggretsuko handled the breakups better too.

Examples, they like the same type of music and seemed to enjoy eachothers company. This could be because we find out Inui and him have a decent amount in common. It is not to diss Retsuko but she doesn't seem to know much about Haida as a person. Even when she asked him to help with learning to play guitar. (She didn't even know guitar and bass guitar are completely different.) Haida literally plays bass guitar. He knows a little of guitar because he use to play an acoustic guitar for a little while. This is one example that shows how little Retsuko knows about Haida. That's just my thoughts on it.

I think retsuko doesn't ask todano to give the boss a job because she doesn't want to come off as depending on his status even though she is using him she is also doing the leg work herself so she isn't only using todano. It made sense to me to just make retsukos character seem even more wholesome.

i think you greatly misusnderstand what the fuck retsuko's trauma isolation was about. people react to trauma in different ways, but that doesnt make them valid. what retsuko was doing was literal self harm. i wish i had someone like haida to call me out on my self destruction when i wasted a year of my life destroying every relationship i had. season 3 really spoke to me
@jasxene_10 ай бұрын
real!! all she was doing was reading hate comments about herself, we see her isolated crammed in her room and scrolling endlessly on her phone, obviously draining her even further.

They wanted to have the Aggretsuko show go on forever, so whenever something that would change the status quo happened, they came up with some bullshit reason for why it doesn't stick. The problem I had with Haida dragging Retsuko to karaoke after the stalker incident is that it wasn't about Retsuko's job being on the line or about them not wanting to give up on herself and letting the stalker beat her... It was about Haida losing his way to keep being in her orbit. If they don't have their job in common and she's not living close to him anymore, he doesn't have any way to keep pining after her while never making a move. I get being spurred into action at the thought of REALLY losing someone, but doing it the way he did right after she lived through a traumatic experience makes him come off as extrmely callous and self-centered, and I don't think that makes him a good dating prospect for anyone. Haven't seen seasons 5 yet, so maybe I'll pivot on him again, but he's progressively become a character I just don't like, and season 3's ending and all of season 4 just made me lose hope on their relationship as end game.

It's been awhile but I thought the Christmas episode showed Retsuko declining Haida after he shoots a shot. She said she wasn't interested at all him and saw him as a friend. So going forward it fell even more pathetic to see him not honored that boundary and move on. Plus the show really did poor Inui dirty

S9meone mentioned that the creator originally only wanted to do 2 seasons, but Netflix encouraged them to keep making more, which explains why we're getting what we're getting

Haida: the guy I wanted to root for. The guy I rooted for. But then he done fucked up and now I can't root for him. He dropped the ball at almost every turn even though everyone was passing the ball to him and telling him to shoot even with the opposing team going "GO SHOOT MAN!"
@LizardOfOz69 Жыл бұрын
the biggest fuck up they did was him actually managing to blur out to her he likes her at the end of Season 2, and her response was a big NO, and yet the following seasons she continues to haunt his brain 24\7, until season 5 officially says "fuck it, they're together" right at the start.

Listening to this summary, makes this ship feel a lot like Ross and Rachel with Haida being a bit less toxic. Slow burn relationships can be good when the characters both grow and come together in a more natural way, kinda like Nick and Jess from New Girl. I was very invested in their friendship growing into attraction and genuine romantic love for each other.

I was wary about clicking expecting to be the same old arguments but you laid out your argument in a way I do actually agree with. Romantic tension is great until it's pushed to the limit it becomes exhausting. I feel like some shows are worried that if they get together it will become boring. I don't know you can't tell good stories with a established couple?

"Now Aggretsuko is all about that repressed agony of being in your early 20s." *Proceeds to list things I can't relate to* I think we have a very different idea of what early 20s look like.

Everybody does have different experiencies, but sadly most people are traumatized, have low EQ or live precariously, so they relate to Aggretsuko a lot

If you work in your early 20s, it's all relatable.
@Mediados Жыл бұрын
@@rougestarlight4308 I still wouldn't say most people are traumatized. I mean of course it's not fun for many people who have to work shit jobs, but I am pretty sure that most 20 year olds aren't barely clinging to their sanity. Having shitty bosses is very relative because you can just as well have a good one even if you hate your job, and having no plans for the future is kind if your own fault.

Agreed! Haida finally stepped up. My favorite part was when Retsuko was moaning in her slacks, Haida did the exact same thing she did when Haida did it, "So, how long you gonna mope for? Here have a banana", and puts it in her mouth XD

I mean, the thing about dating Tadano that a lot of people don't get unless they've been there (and I have) is if that relationship goes south you have nothing. If they don't want you to work, and promise to cover the expenses, and they leave the picture? You have. Nothing. You cannot cover your expenses. So sure, on the surface it looks like the perfect relationship! It looks fun! But the reality is, you're walking a tightrope. And you can fall at any moment. There are of course, the other issues like their end goals (Childfree, Marriage free vs Children & Marriage) not being compatible but this always gets me. Everyone thinks Tadano is perfect- But having dated and gotten cheated on by a Tadano, He's not. He's not perfect. He's risky. Haida..is a male hyena. Male hyena's are submissive by nature. So.. His personality is spot on for that. Whether he's right for Retsuko or not.. I can't say. But I'd take a Haida over a Tadano any day.
@phirerising Жыл бұрын
As for the yelling at her.. The reason this works, is it shows he knows her. He understands her. He gets it. He can relate. And that's really all she wants at that point.

I knew something odd was happening when I knew, logically, Retsuko and Haida would end up together, but in my heart, I was rooting for Retsuko and Tadano.

Tbh, when his scenes with Tadano have more "will they, won't they" energy then any interaction with the main character of the story, especially one on the plane, it's not surprising that his gay ships are more plausible in the eyes of the viewers.
