Suggestion: There are lots of videos of bipedal robots walking around with a box. They all have the look of a polished demo using a prototype. If you want to show something much more impressive, how about a time-lapse video of many hours of Digit autonomously breaking down pallets at a loading dock, walking back and forth from stock shelving, and putting everything away, again, and again, and again. There is nothing like that out there, and that would make headlines: A bipedal robot actually doing a person's job for a full shift. Otherwise it just looks like a really expensive toy.

They won't, the battery life on those things is incredibly short and lifting heavy boxes costs a lot of energy. They'd need to have a system where they have replaceable powerbanks in the wall that can take their used one and replace it with a fully charged one.

Fantastic production values on your video. Several suggestions on how to succeed going forward from a tech specialist and social media guy: Present Digit in an environment with humans. Civilians. People who are not just scientists and assembly workers and representatives. The public needs to be charmed and reassured that Digit is friendly and can not only negotiate a world of 1's and 0's, but also negotiate a world of human subtleties and social behaviors. Don't make companies connect the dots themselves. You're the experts, you're the hype, you have to show Digit moving boxes in an assembly line, doing jobs that are hazardous or exhaustive to do, making deliveries without the fear of corona, etc. Again, working along side everyday people. Also, invest in social media in a bigger way. This video is fantastic, and the optics on Facebook and other social media don't match up. This video should be getting millions of views. Just a few weeks ago, a cellphone video of Boston Dynamic's Spot stole the show with millions of views, and it had nothing to do with production value. It had everything to do with promotion on social media, and showing people interacting with the robot in an everyday situation. Hope this helps, Keep up the amazing pioneering work.

Honestly really good job Agility Robotics! Obviously everyone is going to compare these to Boston Dynamics Atlas but I actually really like this design just as much - it's not as "advanced" in terms of performance and capabilities but I also see that it's not trying to be. It seems that you took a different route of creating a simpler, more reliable and cheaper (not in a bad way though) bipedal robot rather than a state-of-the-art parkour machine :) Everything about the construction of Digit screams to me simplicity and ease of manufacture while at the same time it looks really sturdy and well put together. I wonder if making the legs digitigrade was easier than plantigrade? (talking about the number of joints below the hip - plantigrade having two and digitigrade or unguligrade having three). I think the only problem I personally have with the legs is how exagerated the bend is - it extends really far backwards - I bet that's for added leverage? And finally was digitigrade the inspiration for the robot's name?

I don't think there is any more reason now to believe that trend will end.

I mean we've been leaking jobs out of the economy for a while now, and AI is VERY different from just a computer which still needs an operator, a machine that performs complex tasks repetitively. An AI can write stories, an AI can replace an office worker, or several at once. An AI can replace call centers, an AI is literally an artificial human brain. The last useful part of a human. It's different this time, don't pretend that when we have robots that can do everything for us, that there will still be jobs for a human to do.

@@SherrifOfNottingham I think regarding the creative part of the A.I is to support humans, not to take over just because its more advanced, And A.I can assist in finding solutions as human creativity can be a input we as humans recognize.. A.I will change a lot things, but regarding automation of simple annoying jobs or jobs nobody wants to do like construction is all being developed to replace humans. Humans can do things that are useful for themselves.

I'm very happy and impressed by what these creators have done with technological advances. How does the ethical case work for having robots replace human beings in meaningful, paid work and industry hold up? Secondly, has there ever been a case in history where technology like this was not eventually weaponised? That is not to say that this type of pathway should never be explored or developed, only that the moral and ethical basis is developed in tandem. For those who might think the abuse of robotics and AI is a ridiculous notion, I met one of the leading AI authorities back in 2012 (he was working on the creation of the World's first artificial brain in a Beijing project ) at the time. This very interesting gentlemen (who was indeed one of the 4 top AI exponents on the planet) stated to me that abuse, and eventual weaponisation of robotic systems and AI was inevitable and that due caution was being ignored.

Your phone breaks as you fall over some rocks and hurt your leg. Call Digit and tell him it's an emergency. He runs off and gets help, or helps carrying you to safety. Would be interesting to see a robot that is built like a human (or at least in a computer simulation) and see how it learns and optimises movements, and moves. Void of an emotional history, void of cultural context, void of specialisation, it would be really interesting to see how an "ideal human" would move, what pathways and trajectories he would take, at what speeds, as opposed to us.

Give it fingers while you're at it, so it can firmly pick stuff up. I've seen this laser charging tech around some time ago. Basically the idea was that the laser charging station would be mounted somewhere on the ceiling and it could charge anything in it's LOS. That'd be pretty neat for a robot to have a charging capability this way. No needing to dock it somewhere to charge or have a cable tethered from somewhere, just have it loiter around in the laser's LOS and it'll charge. Or better yet, have multiple lasers set up, so where ever it goes it'll stay charged.
@seanfinlayson86334 жыл бұрын
Really interesting and great progress. One point I have to make is that digit is way to slow. His movements are not nearly quick enough and I suspect his reaction time to sudden stimuli is likewise sluggish. These are areas I'm sure they are working on.

The end wall was all tapedrives. It was a 64 bit computer. That was in the 70s. Today I have 8 64bit cores plus memory batteries display etc in my pocket. Great job. That factory scene reminded me of the Warper assembly line in Subnautica. I'd like to see it start a mower, mow the lawn, then fetch me a beer. I'd also love to see a garden mode that can do the weeding, find and destroy caterpillars (no poisons required). Shovelling dirt into a wheelbarrow, push to destination, then tip and smooth is another useful mission mode. It will be interesting to see the minimal hand dexterity to do these tasks (or just have a rotary quick-swap tool selector?). I suspect the SLAM, overall situational awareness and other AI aspects have a way to go yet. Also, please make a rideable one that can handle rugged bush terrain, and climb. (heck, can it swim too?) Less AI, but scaled up engineering. The only question is, will they ever be affordable?
