Are you too old to start the martial arts? What opportunities did we miss if we wait? Today we talk about an observation regarding how most people tend to wait and question whether or not to start something new. What kind of missed opportunities are occurring and how can we approach catching them when they come along?

I'm 62 and thought maybe I could share some of my thoughts and experience. In my teens and twenties I mostly trained Judo and Jujitsu, adding Kempo in my mid twenties. In my mid thirties I started adding Tai Chi and Chi Kung to my practice. Late 30's I was starting to have lots of back and knee problems. In my 40's I was told I needed knee surgery, and had arthritis throughout my spine. The Dr. told me I should adjust my lifestyle for my age. Never went back, and never had surgery. I switched my focus to Chinese internal arts. I practice multiple systems and lineages. I later added yoga with heavy emphasis on pranayama. The last thing I added was the Wim Hof Method and was extremely surprised with the results. You may not have to learn other systems if you add chi kung/yoga/Wim Hof to your training, but I found that for me breathing exercises, meditation, and Bagua are healing all the old injuries I have acquired over the decades, and allows me to practice those other arts I was thinking I was getting to old to continue. To me I'm on a journey down a path with no end.

@@JoseGonzalez-gg6rs Yes I do. We would do our forms 10 times slow for every 1 time fast focusing on Interoception. I think you have to sometimes force yourself not to over do. Maybe do 70% of your max instead of 100% of your max range of motion, number of sets/reps of forms or exercises to cut down injuries and rehab any old injuries. I was having knee issues at one time because my hips were not flexible enough for the amount of horizontal rotation I was using causing lateral repetitive stress on my knees. I slowed down corrected my form/fundamentals and my knee problems are gone. Another thing I have added is Indian Club, and Gada Mace training. Using a 2lb, or 3lb set of clubs can give you a little bit of strength training, and it gives you more of a stretching and loosening up feeling for you joints and muscles. They really work great for any kind of shoulder, neck, or upper back issues, among other things.

@@TheInfantry98 So does that mean he has nothing to offer or benefit from the martial arts? There's more than just fighting and competition. I'll tell you one thing, he'll still be able to defend himself. He's still very fast and still hits very hard, I've seen this as recent as one year ago up close. Enlisting in the military and training in the martial arts are two very very different things. The military also turns away people with eye sight issues...does that mean they shouldn't be allowed on the mats either? My point is...there are a lot of reasons a person can train and a lot of different benefits. People don't always train for the reasons you do.

@@TheInfantry98 It's not that you can't accomplish the job, you just learn to do things differently with skills acquired over time. I was fortunate to learn early in life from these men on the construction site and advanced my skills and quality of craftsmanship by decades along with higher end salary. I will forever be grateful for their gift. Once I asked why they took me in? They said Once upon a time we stood in your boots. We've been where you are now. I train karate whole heartedly by myself with what basics I know. I do it to keep my head/thinking straight from missing my companion of 37 years. To remember katas I forgot, I watch and study videos on youtube.

I just finished my Kata practice which I still do every day, I know 30 Katas and have a 4th degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and a Blackbelt in American Kenpo, but I have trained in Silat and Chinese Kenpo. Today I call my training "Martial Hearts". I've had 6 heart attacks and 4 heart surgeries and my rehab and comeback is a result of kata training, walking and pushups every time. My Brother, this video is SO on time!! I was 13 in 1973 when I started training in Jow Ga Kung Fu in Washington DC. I went on to study Bak Mei , and Tien Shan Pai. Did 25 years as a Police Officer, had my share of situations, and survived because of " this and that"! Lol! I'm 60 now. The mental and physical lessons I learned from Martial Arts helped me navigate through divorce, the careing for and deaths of both my parents, and my own health issues that had me close to checking out of here. The Most High spared me and after a year of hard fought recovery, I'm back on my feet, back in the game, on my night " Security Guard" gig, and practicing my forms again when I get a break , under the moonlight! We can STILL do it if we choose, and we're smart !! Thanks again !!🙏☯️

I began at 12 yrs old with Guoyu Ryu, after a year I switch to Shaolin Kung Fu, which I practiced for more than 3 decades. I injured my back and cervical in the military and had to modify my exercises to a less impact discipline. 7 years ago I began with Aikido and I am very happy and find it very useful for a self defense. I am 61 now and my motto is keep moving, do not stop, just find your way on the type of movements and exercises that your body tells you to do without too much pain. My sensei is 67, the O Sensei is 83 and they both still in grate shape on the mat.

My club has just reopened to new members for the first time since before Covid and a 72 year old guy has signed up to our Kali and JKD classes. Much respect to him, he’s the first to admit he’s not as coordinated or as fit as he used to be but he never misses class, never grumbles and even in a few weeks he’s come on in leaps and bounds. He’s also had a really positive influences on the rest of us, not only because those of us in our 40s and 50s can no longer complain about being too old but because we’ve had to reassess our art and figure out what is key to focus on when you can’t use youth and fitness to mask problems

As I watch this a couple thoughts come to mind. I'm about to be 62. As a 10 year old I started my martial arts journey training in Ed Parkers American Kenpo. A year later I quit. A poor decision always second guessed that one. Fast forward 40 something years and I returned to karate. For the past 12 years I have trained and advanced through the ranks earning that elusive black belt. Of course a very proud moment in my life. Yes aging slows us down and I feel it all the time in my hips, shoulders, back. I will continue to train as long as I can. I would encourage others to train as well, monitoring how my body responds. On the subject of time... I'm learning that there is little in life more valuable than time. Once spent its gone. You can't bank it. All you can do is to utilize the time we have in the most meaningful way we can. Everyday.

Originally it was supposed to be him and his girl but then he asked me and I was like “hell yeah” 😂 and as we were going through the process, he started falling off and he’s ending up quitting at yellow belt and now I’m at blue belt. Heya Mr. Dan what a great video. “Time to do something!” “Just DO IT!” “Carpe diem”. I had this recent moment whereby I had wanted to pick up a book and just make the time to read it. That was a couple of weeks ago now and I have almost finished it. Mind you I had wanted to read a book for a few years now. I have audiobooks and devour them like an addict, however it is normally doing something else, like yard work or driving in the car. There is a sense like/cathartic experience in simplifying an activity and not trying to stack on activities or events. So I would add to your video epiphany - simplify your activities. Enjoy a specific past time and or hobby immerse yourself in it totally. So much more richer for the experience and the recall of a moment. Keep being awesome Mr. Dan!

Since the beginning of the pandemic, I had a lot of time at home, and not a lot of movement / excersize, which really bothered me. So, I started to remember the basic Karate movements I've learned in middle school 20 or so years ago. I started practicing every day, and I started to research martial arts in general, which is how I found this channel along with several other martial arts KZbin channels. Around April of this year (2021), I've collected so much historical and book knowledge about most commonly practiced martial arts, that I became desperate to want to restart my martial arts training. I am proud to say that as of late May, I have been attending a freshly reopened Goju Ryu dojo within 15 minute driving distance of my residence, for 1 hour 4 to 5 times per week, and I couldn't be more happier! After the 1st month, my body has broken-in and stretched out all if my muscles and stiff joints; I feel energetic, excited to learn again, and it is plain nothing short of addicting. The philosophical and spiritual side of Karate is also of great importance to me.

Having to attend evening Karate classes for the majority of the week, forced me to be very careful about what and how much I eat (maybe a topic to explore in another one of your videos), not to mention reevaluating my sleep schedule to ensure that I have sufficient amount of rest to let my body recover from the intense workouts / body conditioning, kihon and kata practices, and sparring of course. Now, I feel much more self-aware of my own body and what is going on around me in general. Furthermore, my ability to focus and control my emotional state has improved as well. I've also got a long term health issue -- fibromyalgia. So I decided (a) I didn't want to do ANY ground/mat work; and (b) since I walked with a walking stick anyway(for those time my walking was challenged) I'd explore stick weapons. Since my preference is so eclectic, I'm teaching myself and have choreographed an internal influenced 'kata' I'm very proud of. I drill with the jo, hanbo and kali stick and for the ageing, the tai chi combo gives me that essential focus on balance without over exertion. Sticks are also great for arthritis in the wrist and fingers.

The tough and uncompromising training that we all go through had prepared me to deal with life's challenges. I had mentally became tougher as I had physically became seasoned. Many years ago,I convinced two 60-year old grandfathers who brought their grandchildren to the dojo to join the training. They were still training when I left organized karate. Nowadays, I'm training almost everyday. Do you know that training in the rain in shorts and tees is a great way to not sweat?😆

This is indeed a very good point, and if one already has some training or experience and you want to get back into it, nothing is stopping you from starting to review what you have already studied or learned before. If you want to train in something new, and circumstances like the pandemic create certain difficulties, then train in something new in an online training situation, but has some familiarity with what you've trained in before. Then continue when the situation allows for such to happen. In my circumstances as this video was playing, before I was spending time knocking the rust off of various styles Kata and their Bunkai. But today I decided to break in a new grappling training dummy and going through some throws, takedowns or ground posture changing drills.

I figured that I should go into boxing before going into a martial again. But found my dojo quick and injured my back & knee. Now I'm hesitant to start boxing for the next few months till I'm comfortable hoping I didn't wait to long for an up coming tournament next year.

Life is like a long walk. You will meet various paths and branches along the way. You may explore those that look interesting, and pass those that dont. To the main thread subject. I returned to karate after a long absence back when I was 67, 12 months on I started aikido as well. I am now 76. I have some issues, but learn to duck and dive with them same as everything else life throws at me. I have been credited with being very fast punching and blocking, but not unexpectedly I feel slow on my feet. I therefore tend to move in aikido style flowing movements, I try to be like water. My point is that as I change, so I try to adapt.

My father always loved martial arts, and his dream was for me to get my black belt in an art, he always felt it would benefit my life. We do not speak anymore, it has been 15 yrs. I only made it to green in shotokan, then life came my way. I started again at 20 in Toshindo, and only lasted a year or so. Drugs and alcohol, depression, blah blah etc etc, had their claws in me. Even though my father and I didn't speak I often dreamt of doing martial arts again, he wasn't wrong after all. At age 37, I decided to take up where I left off with Toshindo, which just ended up changing to a mixed school of MMA principles and Ninjutsu ( or what people call that anyway). Best thing i have ever done. Now I want to continue, as well as take up Karate again. I also got into weapons due to the nature of our school (ninjas and swords ya know haha), and took up Iaido. Again, best thing I could have done, never quit and never say it's too late. I'm in much better shape, and though I don't speak to my father his memory is in my heart in each visit to the dojo. I wish you well Dad, hope you found your path as well! I wish I could help others, but it seems rare to find people willing to take a leap...but I guess we can do our part by trying, not just pushing martial arts but self betterment in general, hiking, running, camping, reading , studying language...ANYTHING. Thank you for your thoughts Mr. Dan, love the channel! Sorry for the bio...;)

I can only imagine after 20 years what it feels like. After almost a year of not training from the pandemic I feel the major backslide, and I notice as I get older my body doesn't retain the flexibility and strength that it did when I was 20. I'm glad to see you are getting back into it now though!

@@ArtofOneDojo My hip flexibility is ALL GONE! It's very frustrating and bewildering to attempt the kicks I used to do easily and feel like my body just "can't". My knees are a bit crunchy these days too! I'm 38 now, and wonder if I'll ever get it back! Thanks for the encouragement, Mr Dan! @@lamplightimage2929 Oh the knee crunches...tell me about it! LOL. What you're going to find is, some things come back and some don't. It's always worse when you just start, but in about a month from now (if you are consistent) you will see a lot of that flexibility come back and your body will adjust and start to remember stuff. It might feel like going through mud for a while and you might not feel like you did in the past...but you'll recover some of it and you will find adjustments to make up for the rest :)

@@JoseGonzalez-gg6rs That's a great question and I can't give medical advice, but I would imagine Kata being excellent for that type of a workout. It would at least keep your form and focus and doing it enough you'd be able to go to the speed you would be able to accommodate but I would think it would be very beneficial. I would definitely speak to your doctor though first to make sure there aren't any unknown or unforeseen risks with that.

I hear ya in this video, the bad traffic in Chicago area drives me nuts at times. You have overcame many injuries with your knee and such, but kept practicing; like me with my bad knee, neck, shoulder, stenoisis, and nerve damage. We cannot give up in the martial arts. Yes we slow down when we age, and have to modify movements, but no matter ones chronological age the martial arts is practical; with softer arts like tai chi. It keeps us moving. I am 56 and in 4 years I will be a Grandmaster. Martial Artists like Chuck Norris, who is 81 now, will always kick strong. We cannot give up on the opportunities of life. Keep on striving. Oss. Master K, MA PS I am going to go read after this. My summer read now is the Anne Frank biography. I am learning about her, because her diary inspires my life. Oss.

I tried learning bjj when I was 23, I was completely new to martial arts completely and had been wanting to learn one for a while. Unfortunately at that time I had a lot of sciatica due to a pinched nerve in my back and I didn’t realize that trying to learn bjj was actually flaring up my sciatic pain even more, so I decided to stop, as I got older the my spinal issues got worse and more painful thanks to a work injury, got to the point I needed to have a surgery, it’s been 4 yrs since then and I have healed up quite well, no pain or anything, and still thinking about trying a martial art, despite my spinal issues. Guess I’m cautiously optimistic. I’m currently attending community college and I learned that my campus has a karate instructor, and thought about maybe taking his classes in spring, if not karate though, I’m lucky that the area I live has quite a lot of gyms & schools, around me teaching various arts, I still think bjj would be interesting to learn, but I’m too nervous with my back to try any type of art that focuses on grappling and submissions. Guess we’ll see how it goes.

And at this point in my life with my purpose being becoming a fighter, not just professionally but in life in general I feel I have the best possibilities ever for me to do what I want to be happy in life, and it starts with my training which has made me a better person as far as controlling my anger and being more kind to people who are deceitful or purposely trying to push my buttons to entertain or fool their self by hating someone else they make up for their problems, and also my spiritual faith for unlike more than most who feel they're owed I blame GOD for nothing or pray for others downfall either for I know by associating with kind-hearted people, using my resources correctly and being giving not generous I'm on the right path and I'm homeless but not hopeless or hateful like many I know who pose like they have everything together but complain, treat people wrong, or are suicidal. In 10 years, you'll be 10 years older, no matter what you choose to do. I did hit pause and went to the back yard and threw a frisbee with my son. In the martial arts, I'll be testing for 3rd degree black belt in a few months - something most 50+ people never dream of doing. Will my forms look like that of my 20-something year old peers? Ha, no way. But, I'll make them mine and they serve to deepen my understanding of the art and of myself. And that, is the goal.

I'm 64. 1st Dan 4th level World Taekwondo. Fortunately I have the physical stamina of a athletic 40 year old. With that said TKD is trying sport on the body. Stretching is very similar to Yoga which is huge as you age. Unfortunately I've torn both hamstrings which limits the height of my kicks. I currently have a slightly sprained Ankle and both knees are sore. Yet I'm still studying. At my age if I take a day off because something hurts I would never study again. Body in motion stays in motion. As a side note am I some old man on the mat. No way. I can more then handle myself sparring. My fellow students would concur. 승리
