Folks have been talking about this for the last 40-50 years. But now that the consequences are catching up to more people the related issues will get more exposure. Which is good for public discourse, but a little too late to prevent harm. Failure to stop policy changes before they are proposed and passed creates messes that should be cleaned up, but they are rarely lobbied for unless someone profits from the change. Now the law is own their side, which can make undoing their profiteering power grabs a challenging endeavor. More so when the larger public remains ignorant to their representatives' decision making, deficit in choices for representation, and generally too busy to follow the details of every bill proposed or the experience to notice all the red flags that make it into law.

This is the end result of over 45 years of "trickle down" economics, the elimination of defined benefit pension plans, the outsourcing of entry level, living wage jobs, and people stuck in low wage, no benefit jobs for the majority of their working lives. Add in rising inflation over this decade, and the situation only becomes more dire. And with the youngest Boomers now reaching retirement age, this crisis will only grow. For those younger people who mock these seniors, don't think this, or something worse can't happen to YOU, or YOURS. In this American economy that is RIGGED in favor of the wealthy, corporations, and banks at the expense of the rest of us, we are ALL vulnerable.

It's called the rent trap. I escaped it 30 years ago becoming a small home/property owner. I succeeded 15 years ago barely paying the debt off with much struggle and hardship. Now I get a Class A property tax exemption in my state through my county assessors office and only have to pay under $12 USD of property taxes every year. I also get free home repairs/upgrades through rebuilding together a non profit as well as utility discounts and a heat pump through a federal grant.

That's why get small place early is the 1st things in life. many don't have sense of it. I persuade a few friends but they said they want larger better homes which they can't afford. They pay a lots of rent instead. They can not see only one paycheck away from homeless. Homeless can happen if something suddenly happen.

Some of these people would actually be better off in some of our prisons. At least they'd have shelter, adequate food and basic medical care. We can surely provide appropriate housing for our older people at less cost than what we pay for prisons!

Those prisons are for profit. So any medical care would be worthless.
@Marella2024
@Marella2024 Жыл бұрын
You can't be serious. Many prisons are disgusting facilities. The "food" that they give the prisoners is inedible! The medical care is inadequate, some facilities are falling a part, there are leaks & flooding in cells, bug infestations, etc. These places are inhumane and you want to say our elderly need to have similar facilities? They need to give the elderly more subsidies so they can stay in their homes and live with dignity. And don't even give me that, "who will pay for it" bs. Our government has sent billions of dollars to Ukraine and other countries when that money could have gone to help the vulnerable people in OUR society.
@Bobrogers99
@Bobrogers99 Жыл бұрын
@@Marella2024 I agree that a modest subsidy would allow most elderly to remain in their homes, often at a lower cost than nursing homes. I was thinking of the non-elderly homeless, who currently huddle in tents in winter, beg for food, and get absolutely no medical care. While some of our prisons are wretched, some are not.

For me having a stable home was the most important thing, after I did that I figured the rest out. Then jobs get lost mortgages go unpaid and soon you are living in your car . Then some one sees you sleeping in your car and instead of helping they call the police and your car is towed. now you have no home, but they feel good about cleaning up the streets. A lot of this has to do with the way we as humans treat each other. Plain and simple in stead of helping it's complaining.

In any group, half the people are above average and the other half are below average. Boomers as a group are no different. Half of Boomers are Above average, did well, invested and now own half the wealth in the country. The below average half didn't do well, never developed marketable skills, lower pay, didn't invest and fell far behind with little or no savings. This is the way of the world, let this be a lesson for young people, you don't need to be the best but you do need to strive to be in above average half.
