This was a hard one to do. Aging, hip point shooting, and the fact some don't know the difference between waiving a gun around to threaten or intimidate and drawing a firearm to stop a perceived threat to harm and life. According to the "brandishing" experts, if you don't shoot, there wasn't serious injury threatened towards your person. So if a threat stops at the sight of a firearm, and a criminal turns and runs before you can pull the trigger then you are supposed to shoot them in the back? I THINK NOT. According to the CDC study the Obama administration squashed, there are literally several hundred thousand times in the course of a year that ordinary citizens stop criminal attacks by the presence of a firearm. And that is the low estimate. The high end estimate was in the millions. So all these citizen defenders need to have been charged with brandishing? Only in a gun controller's fantasy dream.

Yeah, I also wonder how many times things like that happen and never got reported because to do so would be more hassle than a help. Our country has become so overly-legalized that it dissuades people from wanting to contribute positively to it anymore.

@@kyrozudesoya1829 I don't pull my gun unless I am going to shoot. Now if they decide to run away they get a pass. The rules are different for people with disabilities. What you can do is carry openly either a firearm, or non lethal, depending on the state. I have carried openly for decades, and noticed shady people keep their distance. For anti OC folks a pepper gun OC'd has probably the same affect. As a former LEO, OC was always the way I carried on duty, plus yearly training on retention. But there are people who give classes on retention for you non LEO folks. OC should ONLY be done with very secure holsters. At the very least they should have a strap, leather thong.

Generally speaking, one must be able to articulate to the LEO that you were legitimately in fear for your life. Obviously, this standard must be weighed by the totality of the circumstances. The idea being "what would another person in a similar situation do, all things being equal". And that is the rub. An 11 y.o. brandishing a pocket knife can still kill you. An unarmed gym rat who is visibly confrontational committing simple assault (shaking a fist in your face) can kill you too, but remember how a grand jury will view this. You have only a split second to make a life or death decision that the Supreme Court could convene on for two weeks. ¡Cuidado!

At 60 years old and now with a major physical disability stemming from a medical procedure, I have had to completely revise my self-defense practice procedures to accommodate my disability. I am reminded of Crocodile Dundee's friend from the bar, Donk. Everyone needs a Donk. If you do not have a Donk, practice what Greg just said. Point shooting is important to get good at. Because I have carried a small revolver for many years, I train on this regularly. If it is something new for you, plastic dummy rounds in the gun in front of a full-length mirror might be a good warm up before shooting live rounds. Start out very close, a foot, maybe two. As you work yourself away to longer distance, the mirror will provide the mind instant feedback as to where you are pointing. If you can square up to the target, you will increase accuracy. Before squeezing the trigger, with the index shooting finger not touching the trigger, notice, as Greg said, point that finger at the trigger. Look in the mirror. It will not lie. Make adjustments. Replicate the work done with the mirror on real targets on your range and you will be doing pretty well in no time. A smooth draw, the same way every time makes a fast draw. Forget speed. Smooth is fast. It is done correctly and correct is the goal. The mirror and the draw can be worked on at home (unloaded firearm) as much as you want. No cost involved. This is not just a drill for old folks either. I learned all of this as a very young man many decades ago in my military training. To all the Patriots here, stay safe, stay alert, stay strong. Work on fitness (spiritual and physical) every day. Be a hard target. Keep the old man out.

This is a great video for the elderly. In today's society, everyone's a possible victim from the lawless vermin that are attacking virtually anyone they choose. And the elderly are at the top of the criminal's list. As a long retired peace officer, I observe everything. Can give a complete description of a person from a casual glance. I remain armed at all times, and train often on my own range. I'm no longer the physical type as in my youth, but what I've learned over the years has it's benefits.

Once again, another great video! At 54, I'm not the man I used to be. Black belt in Norther Shaolin Kung Fu, but herniated discs forced me to retire. Kicking the bad guy in the head is not an option anymore. However, how you carry yourself has a lot to do with preventing trouble. Situational awareness and a "don't mess with me" aura puts the bad guy on notice that you won't be an easy target. Remember, criminals don't like having to work, hence the lifestyle. Unfortunately, point shooting is not given serious consideration these days. This technique was developed and taught during WWII and used in combat to good effect. It's instinctive, surprisingly accurate and works when aiming is impossible. Rex Applegate's Kill or Killed is a great book that covers this in detail. As far as "brandishing" laws, better to be tried by twelve than carried by six...

Great video Greg, 67 here and suffered a minor stroke 5 yrs ago. That left me with partial paralysis on my left side. Being a lefty all of my years, I had to transition my side arm to right hand. Not an easy task in the beginning but am now as confident righty as I ever was lefty. I do walk with a cane, and do not have the best dexterity on my left side and use the cane in my right hand.. This presented a problem with being able to quickly transfer cane to left hand as I perfected my draw right handed. After many range sessions just practicing that, I have a repeatable system that accomplishes this perfectly. I have also downsizes my EDC from semi autos to a Ruger LCR 38. The potential need to manipulate a semi in the event of a malfunction and my reduced dexterity necessitated moving to the revolver. Yes its only 5 shots compared to the 10 - 15 afforded with a semi but at this age the probability of needing 15 rounds was part of my decision. As stated by several reviews, you plan your activities, travel plans, and exposure to potential higher threat possibilities by location a little differently than you did at 30. Great video again, remain safe, keep vigilant, and continued success with your channel, Bill.

I’m about to turn 77, have a few health challenges, walk w/a cane and know I present an easy target. Aggressive panhandlers have approached me twice and I used my best police voice, saying “I can’t help you” and so far it’s worked. I’ve never had to pull my gun, but I had my hand in my pocket where the weapon was in each instance. Situational awareness becomes even more important to avoid getting into bad situations. I avoid Walmart parking lots at night, when I am leaving the grocery store, I scan the parking lot for anything that seems suspicious. I get in my car and lock the doors and start the engine to drive away and not check my emails on my phone. Pulling into a gas station, I scan the station before stopping at the pumps and if things look suspicious, I will drive off. I daily carry a 1911 in .45 acp with a spare magazine and have for years. I train regularly with my 1911. My wife and I seldom go out at night anymore and we avoid going into major cities. As we get older, we want to avoid risks and stay aware.

Something I would point out is that I'm not too big on guns with lasers but point shooting would be the best reason to have a laser on your pistol. Revolvers might better for this because they make the grips with an integrated laser which helps make the most of your limited capacity and doesn't require a special holster to accommodate like you would with an LAM on a semi-auto pistol. Good video sir. Point shooting and similar techniques are what I define as "Point of Origin" techniques. Awareness and verbal commands are very important. When we have to deploy a weapon (knife, walking cane, firearm) it's important that we are able to deploy and use it as efficiently as possible because any extra movement could cause the technique to fail and/or give the bad guy more time to attack. I always pick my wardrobe around the weapon(s) I'm going to be carrying that particular day. And that wardrobe factors in accessibility and deployment of those weapons. When I go for walks I carry pepper spray (pepper spray gel is more concentrated than regular pepper spray, along with a knife and firearm). The pepper spray is small enough to fit in my hand and not be easily noticed. My knife is the same way. At my current fitness level (65 and still teaching/training martial arts) I prefer to use pepper spray or a closed knife as a strike enhancer rather than going straight to a revolver or small semi-auto. We have to be realistic in our abilities to defend ourselves. When we are blessed to be retired and choose when we have to go out in public a little planning on our self-defense strategy including the weapons and wardrobe (as well as practice with those tools in the privacy of our homes) gives us a better chance of survival if God forbid we are attacked. Keep up the great work sir...:)

I am 67 and at around 65 I started to feel older. The left knee needs to be replaced. I am on blood thinners due to a fib. I go to the gym every other day but I am not nearly as strong as a decade ago. The Harley rod glide is now a Harley trike. I did martial arts for 26 years and had my own school for some years. I carry a walking stick of hickory that would allow me all the techniques I learned with the Jō. I carry a personal protection device but most situations I don’t believe would require it. It’s about adapting to life’s new challenges

I walk with a cane so i always practice point shooting since in a self defense situation it is really the only way i will be defending myself. That too why i like small guns, quick and easy to maneuver. Too i no go to shady places, usually home before dark, etc.

I like carrying other handguns, but realistically, for most places a five shot snub in a pocket conceals, is accessible, draws easy because of the short barrel, and is ideal for close quarter self defense, which is what most of us would encounter.

Good morning Greg, nice shooting. Everyone young and old needs to have a plan. And we need to practice that plan. We’ve all just witnessed another extreme example of being unprepared. Perhaps in the future you could demonstrate some safe practice drills or ideas that could be done when we can’t get to the range. Nice shooting and nice cane. The cane, or stick, can make a great improvised isometric exercise tool. 💪. Thanks again for posting your videos.

thank you, greg, that was a great video with, again, great advice. i liked where you said that after you draw to shoot if they keep coming. i was talking to a friend who carries empty chamber expecting to israeli draw, and tried to explain that cocked and locked, especially with a holster strap between the hammer and frame, is safe because the only time you pull it out of the holster is if you intend to use it. you just have to remember to thumb down the safety, and then comes the dangerous part of remembering to put the safety back up before re-holstering. i typically don't carry guns with safeties unless it's a 1911. oh yeah, oh yeah, great hip shooting. you definitely stopped his attack. i need to practice that. i just realized it's probably been decades, maybe even three since i've point shot at anything.

Most people who I consider expert and many more that I don't, heartily discourage Israeli carry. How many times do people in normal range practice short stroke a slide? That is just one more thing to negotiate before that gun is presented.

I don't use a cane or walker but I just can't move as fast I as used to. Being in a state of heightened situational awareness to avoid problems is your first line of defense. Excellent video, pocket carry is my normal EDC SW638 with laser grips since eye sight ain't what it used to be. Point shooting used to be taught, two handed TACTICAL shooting is fine if their 20 + yards away.

That's a good self defense set-up you have there. As my eyesight goes the way the rest of my body is heading, a laser might be an investment in the future. As you said, situational awareness is the best defense.

I have a somewhat bizarre question that I would really enjoy hearing your opinion on. When I was a kid my grandfather told me a story of a state cop that pulled over a driver on the highway at night for speeding. When he got out of the cruiser, the man in the car he pulled over got out of his car with a knife in hand and coming towards the officer who was carrying a 6 shot 38 special service revolver, the officer fired all six rounds into the man's chest and torso area, however that did not stop him, resulting in a physical fight, which I believe led to the officer being stabbed and killed, with the attacker eventually bleeding out from the 38's. So my question is this: What would your immediate response likely be as an average person without extra police gear, if you were being attacked by a knife weilding attacker and all you had left was your empty handgun. I've always thought about this story, and I've never even able to decide what could have been different if it was me.
@LionquestFitness

Not a bizarre question at all. Masaad Ayoob answered it in a 1979 book on police impact weapons. Use that revolver as a bludgeon. Nowadays most don't carry a revolver, so there needs to be strategies trained for if that drug or adrenaline induced crazy doesn't go down. Weapons of opportunity, evasion, putting barriers between, and or escape need to be considered and planned for.

I like to have choices. For me, it's a 15 round 9mm AND a 5-shot .357. It's not a guarantee, but it allows for options when situations vary. Of course, the police end up with (at least temporarily) two guns.

@@Isaac_5.56x45 I used to have a 642, and my gf has a 442. They're a great light weight option. Presently, I've been carrying a model 640 .357 at 3 o'clock (in a Blackhawk Speed Classic owb holster), and a Shield Plus 9mm in a Vedder Pocket Locker holster. The .357 is usually loaded with Hornady CD 125 grain or Federal 140 grain Barnes Expanders. Also have a couole of 5-shot speed loaders. I have a 15 round mag in the Shield w/Winchester 9mm +P+, and two 13 round mags with Sig V-crown hollow points. Anyway, the Shield should probably be at 3 o'clock and the revolver in the pocket, but I like the look of a revolver in a leather owb holster.

There is safety in numbers if that is possible. Even if it is just your wife, and yourself, both of you should be armed. Even if you don't carry look like you are armed, maybe a Glock hat or shirt. Bad guys in prison were surveyed in Florida a couple decades back, and they overwhelmingly said they avoid armed citizens. I don't usually carry pepper spray, but my wife is also armed, and she does in her purse. The pepper spray is not that effective, it has a delay in disabling, but it can give a person an edge to have time to get to their firearm. "Do you have a light", "What time is it", "I'm lost" and other ruses are used to get close to you.

Great advice, but one thing you failed to mention is carry ammo, as most self defense ammo will not expand out of a 2" barrel revolver. Even for an older person, recoil may or may not be a problem with a close range attacker. Also most attackers these days will be carrying a gun, and one must be ready to make a head shot if the attacker is reaching for his firearm. I love your video's and I'm over the moon watching you talk about seniors carrying guns. I hope some idiot that was thinking about attacking someone older see's your video and thinks twice before ever attacking someone. Peace.. Joe
