In Houston, Texas the last measurable precipitation was on September the 6th. So that's a Derecho in May, A hurricane in July and now a flash drought in September/October...

I appreciate the models trying to get precipitation going, but I can't remember the last time a percentage chance for rain got higher as the event approached or when we received over what was predicted. It seems like every precipitation event is over predicted until about 3 or 4 days out.

Nice to see the ECMWF AI hinting at the idea of another cutoff low dropping into the southwestern US and lifting out toward the central High Plains during the first week of November. That far out in time may be in la la land but the fact that a cutoff low just did that same thing this past weekend would suggest that we're seeing a pattern change that could support it. Maybe not a drought breaker but anything on the winter wheat crop this time of year is a bonus.

Ya eastern iowa has been dry but the soil is still moist 6 to 8 in down. Since groing seasons over nothing is sucking it dry so if we get 3 in by spring we will be sitting good

The continental U.S. is now firmly dominated by the 'CMNAO', i.e. the Culturally Modified North American Oscillation. Characterized by the ridge that's now commonly entrenched from Mexico to Hudson bay and interestingly is super stable. Crazy warm gulf of mex + high global background temps? I'd wager the upper Midwest will likely never see extended stretches of stable cold (average) again in our life times. Cold intrusions are rare and fleeting.

2024 Year Of The Ridge and Dry. Pattern wash rinse repeat. Hope the late month storm system don't dupe us.
