@taitano125 ай бұрын
Humans: "Hahaha yup." 😎👍 "Now then. Shall we get this party started?" Thus began the most bizarre, disturbing, yet fun and entertaining epoch the Universe has ever seen. God facepalms and He, Jesus, and the entire Q Continuum appear in Amelia's office. "Congratulations." Q says, "You just gave a hundred billion toddlers the keys to a FLEET of dreadnoughts and whatnots. Now He has a gift... A 'reward' of sorts, just for you." God: "You are going to live the full five to twenty MILLION YEARS it's going to take us to corral my kids... In fact, after a few millennia of learning from us, YOU will PERSONALLY assist with cleaning up the mess they're about to make." Q: "Even I wasn't THAT dumb." 🙄 The Organians appear: "Uh, a little help, please? Apparently we no longer exist... And that Trelain fella has been turned into a lobster." Amelia: "Who are you, and how are you here if you don't exist?" Jesus: "They're fictional now... Just... Just don't worry about it for now. Well, we'll be back." All three vanish in a puff of logic. As they do, one of the Q turns blue and sprouts a hundred arms and yells "SERIOUSLY!? A hecatonch-"

0:30 That part of stories always vexes me. Save places do not promote intelligence. Intelligence needs a lot of resources. 20% of our energy consumption, in case of humans. If it cannot give you as much or more energy (even on low development levels) or increase your survival odds, it is not worth the effort evolutionary speaking. Deadliness is like those admission checks on the rolercoaster: "Your planet needs to be at least this deadly to promote intelligence."
@christopherg23478 ай бұрын
@poiujnbvcxdswq If adding intelligence increase your energy consumption by 5% but does not give you 6% more energy in return or a big survival advantage, it is a dead end. I added the survival thing as after thought. Because just surviving to pass on your genes is an evolutionary advantage. It can even be a net negative in energy.

Ok, so Dr Amelia fainted on first contact with a human brain. Then she said humans have insanely high psychic potential, off the charts high. She also discovered that human brains are far more complex than other sentient species. She tried getting him to be psychic, wound up comatose, again, and realizes human brains are too compartmentalized to be psychic. Didn’t it ever occur to her that nature had installed a safety feature?! I just got to the part of the story where she’s trying something to integrate his brain to make him psychic. Obviously she has never read any of our history books. At this point, I’m wondering which way this will go: zombie apocalypse or supernova?…

If the healer heals emotional and memory issues - wouldn't help with the neurodegenerative person. That's an ongoing physical destruction of the actual brain. Any help would be nothing more then temporary at best. If the being is able to physically alter and heal cells, maybe they could help that person. Wow, with powers like that humanity wouldn't need space ships to explore or even huge support to terraform currently lifeless worlds.
@nielsjensen41858 ай бұрын
As someone who has been educated in both psychology, neurology, and habitual science this story makes me hurt with how much it leans on memes about the brain. Everything that comes from Freud has been debunked. Ego, super-ego, and ID are no longer taught since it's inaccurate. The subconscious has no control over them, the subconscious is the super-ego and the id while the ego is formed from our psychological phenomenology. Emotions and logic are both needed in about equal measure to form rationality. If the ratio is off irrational things are formed instead. The sides of the brain being different is called the locational theory and it has been challenged in recent years by the plasticity theory which says that the areas of the brain have preferred "jobs" and that if one section is damaged another will take over to the capability it can. This is supported by people who have had brain injuries from a young age and function relatively normal despite that they should be unable to. One of the participants of one study was one of the last people who had been lobotomized as a child. According to the location theory, he should have no drive or a wide range of emotions, except he had a full emotional life that would only be possible if the plasticity theory was accurate. Doing everything consciously would be horrible, and lethal since we have something called the autonomous nerve system that handles relatively unimportant stuff like breathing and our heartbeat. We can also do things subconsciously, we call those "habits" and we can perform habits for a long time without growing tired while everything so new it requires conscious control makes us exhausted. Something as simple as talking is a habit. Anyone can talk for a long time in a familiar environment without really feeling anything about it, meanwhile, if they have to talk in an unfamiliar setting doing so will leave them mentally exhausted while they get used to it, and as this happens the mental exhaustion from each event will grow smaller and smaller. The human brain being more complex than the aliens' one? Nah fam, to allow for progress and the creation of proper societies the brain needs to be as complex as the human one. The human one is the largest brain on the planet in the surface area once you unfold it. Their brains would have to be just as complex to be more than just functional animals. Sentience without sapience.

Am I the only one who's a bit worried at the thought of humanity gaining this level of control over reality? Even now it seems that our power has far outstripped our wisdom, we have gained the ability of many things but rarely ask whether we should. Would healing humanity's mental illness to give them this level of power also give them the ability to use their power wisely or would the newly healed become monsters?
