I’m a gigging guitarist, old enough to grow up in the heyday of Gibson, Fender, Epiphone, Gretsch, etc. But in 2024, PRS guitars have released me from the stronghold of the vintage brands that my idols played. The statement “ I’m no PRS guy” is one of someone that has not played many of these instruments. They’ve become simply the best guitar on the market today,…you pick your price point, and spend some time with it, you’ll see what I mean! Cheers.

What I've noticed is that guitarists tend to be illogically sentimental. As a new guitarist who picked it up as a COVID hobby, I had no prior brand loyalties or affiliations and PRS is where my heart landed. Along the way I tried all the classic offerings from Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Schecter, etc. And I still own those but I really think nobody makes a better guitar in 2024 than PRS. And the crazy thing is my 800 dollar SE Swamp Ash Special gets played more than my 15,000 dollar Private Stock. And they feel equally as playable. The quality is just otherworldly, especially for the SE price point. I think as new generations of guitarists come up, you will see less Gibson and Fender and more PRS. Most people who play those brands often have guitar heroes or family that played them, so thats just what they got brought into. For someone like me who has no guitar heroes and chose simply based on the quality, the spec and the aesthetics, PRS is king.

@lbguitar To each their own, maybe I've been unlucky, but I've never actually played a PRS that had a neck profile I've liked and have been through tons from varying price points (no private stock). Probably why there are multiple brands still in business. All my heroes played fender/gibson, I don't. I feel like gretsch gets overlooked a lot, but also realize those aren't for everyone either. Not actually sure why I'm even replying, just don't get the huge hard on everyone has for PRS I guess.

@mronlinedad8601 That's fair enough, preferences exist for sure. There are certainly some PRS guitars that I didn't get along with either but the build quality was always excellent. I'm sure there are some shifty PRSs out there too but I just don't see them or hear about them as often. I've always wanted to try a gretsch!

My favorite PRS pre-covid was always the $499 PRS SE Standard 24. Then the price jumped to $650 and was almost the same as the Custom 24 pre-covid. Glad to see they have another $499 option, eventhough they had to cut costs by using a bolt-on neck instead o set-neck.

I'm willing to bet that someone in some meeting at PRS at *some* point or another someone actually said the words "Let's do what Gibson does - but in reverse". A reputable guitar brand known for their hyper artisan expensive guitars that not only keeps their affordable import line at stable prices but even expends it with a new modell at the absolute bottom price for name brand guitars and still manages to keep all the key features and specs of the original?! what kind of sorcery is this?!

I believe PRS is as big as it is Gibson with quality control. As of late, PRS is not as overpriced against Gibson as it once was. The Gibson PRS clone is a Floyd Rose quilt top Les Paul for $5,000. The PRS 10 tops are $500 more and the non 10 tops are $300 less. The customs to customs are about the same price.

I've never even tried an SE, I own two core custom 24's, and they are just amazing. I've never understood why some people say that PRS guitars have no soul, mine sound beautiful. I love the big necks, and the 57/08 pickups sound killer. As someone who would only play American, or Japanese guitars for years, I've begun to like cheaper guitars? I have recently bought an Epiphone, something that I would never have done before, and those new PRS SE's look great, and I wish my wife would let me buy more guitars, but I think she'd beat me to death with it if I did?

Yes, they're all incredible guitars in their own right, but I kinda hated how they felt, so I always thought PRS guitars weren't for me... But damn, I almost bought this CE! It had some kinda magic to it that made it much better and more fun to play than the other SEs. Anywho! Great example of less is more. This model in that color, would be a great mod platform. For someone looking for classic looks with tons of potential for upgrades. This is hard to beat for the price. Some better looking tuners and a few electronics upgrades would give it a more modern metal twist. I've got enough spare parts lying around to completely gut one to the husk. Things that make you go, Hmm?

I like this style of review where you let the guitar you inspire you to work on making music inspired by the feel you're getting from the guitar. I got the PRS SE Swamp Ash Special in Vintage Sunburst around Christmas time and at first, I really didn't like it. I think they did a lot less on that guitar with the wiring than they could have. In my opinion it needed a blade switch and / or more push pull pots. I almost just ordered one of these, or a CE 24 in gloss, or the new sandblasted. I really appreciated your honesty about the feel of the back of the neck. I grew up on a satin walnut Gibson The Paul (my first owned electric), but the neck was quickly hand oil glossed. I sent the Swamp Ash Special back even though it did start to inspire me some. I just couldn't rock with it, especially in the beginning. There was an Epiphone Les Paul 60's in Quilt Dark Honey at AMS that was the last one in stock. I had one at the same time as the Swamp Ash Special but the top sucked from certain angles and it went back as well. So, I'm trying again. I plan to get a SE CE 24 at some point soon and I will either paint the back of the neck or oil it if I decide to keep it. I got sick in 2019 and have done very little guitar work until recently and especially painting or other finishing. After I have spine surgery soon, I hope to get back to being able to paint and finish in the way I like to do it. The tactile feel of some of the SE necks just isn't my thing and maybe with a finish treatment of my liking on the neck, they will grow on me. In the beginning, the balance in my lap just didn't feel good as well. I guess it's all of the years of Les Paul's and Stratocasters that has me biased. Anyway, I watched the entire video and I like your style.

I’ll admit, as a PRS player for more than 30 years now, I was very dismissive of the SE guitars when they first came out. The Zach Myers’s model v2 was my first intro to them and I really liked it. I’m definitely picking one of these up just to have something I can keep in a different tuning for when the heavy mood strikes. And it will sit right next to my Core and Private Stocks in my PRS rack. Also, NOT a dentist.

Looks very decent for the price. Competes well against used guitars at the same or higher price. The “SE” label on a PRS is the sorta “kiss of death” that Squier label is to Fender. I own a ‘97 CE as well as an SE Torero - and was super impressed by the Torero, but while it looks fantastic, I just haven’t become attached to it. Was a $1k guitar new, and mine is mint condition - but had it up for sale for $500 for months and just no one interested. Kinda like selling one of the top level Squiers, no one wants to pay money for one. (It doesn’t help that the SE guitars were overstocked after the pandemic, and stores were slashing prices, but still, my Torero was cheaper than a new SE Custom, and the Torero is neck through, Floyd Rose, and active EMGs.) So yeah, this new SE CE is a nice addition to the lineup… but I see it as an affordable guitar you don’t have to worry about dinging it all up, or a step up from the $299 beginner guitars. Otherwise, a used SE Custom is about the same price or cheaper, and “looks” like a fancy PRS.

I had a play on one when I was at Sweetwater a month or so ago. To me I don't honestly notice much difference in access vs the standard PRS design. It's more comfy than a strat or other similar block neck joint, but I didn't feel like it made any real difference to me vs how PRS normally did it. I guess they use the same basic neck joint block cut on the 509 as well. Anyway was a cool guitar.

A good way to imagine bolt-on snap is to picture playing a Stevie Ray Vaughan riff. It won’t feel or sound the same on a Les Paul with P-90s. Similar thing with bolt-on basses. When slapping or playing hard, there is a zhush to the attack that is tempered a bit on neck-through basses. It’s part of the soup along with pickup placement, scale, fretboard wood, etc.

Dude! Because of this video, I went into Guitar Center this week looking for the red version of this! I have 2 charcoal SEs already: the Paul's, and the Custom 24 Floyd, so I wanted a red one this time. They were sold out of that color. I picked up the Charcoal to just get the feel of this new version... surprisingly the first impression.... wasn't good. Maybe I just really wanted red. Well, I decided to wonder and see what guitars were on stands around the store... maybe someone had left a red one by an amp that they played it on? Low and behold! I found a Ruby Red Custom 24 LTD, listed on THAT LOCATION'S site at $849, but with clearance sticker of $599 on it!!! I plugged it in and INSTANTLY fell in love! My girlfriend (she is AWESOME AND SOON TO BE MY WIFE 😂) said "Get it!" She bought it for me for an early Father's Day gift! Only 100 more than I'd planned for the guitar in this video! Moral of the story? My woman is better than yours! 😂 (Also, check physical stores before purchasing online. EVERY online source (Amazon, etc) listed the guitar at $849. We saved $249 by getting out of the house. Btw: GREAT REVIEW!!¡ STILL MIGHT GET ONE EVENTUALLY 😉

Been going down the prs train for the last year… bought a tremonti SE and… yeah the violin carve is not there… but the neck is awesome. It holds tuning… just great instruments. Apart from that : what about deep dive review of your esp usa custom eclipse purple splatter. !??😢😢

I recently acquired this guitar and it’s ridiculously underpriced. As far as quality control goes. It’s great. No un even frets. No twist in the neck. Stays in tune. And since Therese no poly choking the guitar. It’s sounds great. The only thing I’m mad about is it just shows how other companies are pricing their guitars. And I own a Majesty 😂.

I kind of wish it was a CE22 so the neck pickup would be in the vintage position.

I have 2 SEs: Paul's, and the 24 fret Floyd Rose. If I walk in Guitar Center and they have the red one, I'm leaving with it. If they don't, then I'll find one!

Can you lock the bridge so it is a fixed bridge or just remove the tremelo arm and use it as a fixed bridge? I love the PRS models but don’t want a tremelo and swap strings in a breeze if needed without unscrewing the tremelo string saddles or if 1 string breaks the whole guitar is out of tune 😅

When I get this I’m just going to buy some 3+3 locking tuners & install them

Hunter, what is that piece of gear you clamp onto the strings above the nut? Does it help keep tuning stable?

I think that just keeps the open strings from vibrating too much when they aren't actively being played.

Wish PRS would release an affordable workhorse hardtail. To me PRS is *THE* Nu Metal guitar brand. Brad Delson of Linkin Park, Dan Donegan of Disturbed, Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit and several more, they all used PRS back in the day.

Man, I bought the Vintage Cherry one and loved it but had a defective pot. I took it back and traded it towards a red flame maple CE24 SE and wow. I've never been a PRS guy, but I think I might be now.

Careful... I swore I'd never waste money on a "POS" guitar when I was in my 20's. Got my first SE in 2017 heavily discounted as it had shipping damage and was a scratch and dent deal. Fast forward 7 years and Now I own an American CE 24-08 (PTC customized), a SEZM, a SE silver Sky, an SE Angelus, the aforementioned SECU24 , and as of late a 2017 Core Custom 24. Bloody things have taken over my guitar wall 🤣. Have plans for a Tremonti and a Holcomb SE eventually, and maybe some sort of another American PRS too of life and finances permit.

@shawnmcginnis2508 the Tremonti was the only one that had ever tempted me! But this one is a gorgeous red, which is my favorite color, so it honestly was a win-win for me. I think I'm gonna go after a charcoal 594 SE, but not the single cut.

Prolly buff it for maximum yardage if throwing against the poly's and the nitro's. A two hander. Bolties don't survive impact well so throw wisely. Where is my V Mr Smith? My V!

Sorta different ends of the spectrum, but I think it shows if you know how to work your gear, you can probably cover a wide range of things with it.

Not gonna lie I saw a se ce24 on sweet water and kinda impulsively purchased it which I know buying a guitar off the interwebs is a dumb thing if you never played it but god damn the look of the the particular serial number I found had me thinking critically so I made the executive decision to get it. I’m excited about my first good guitar I’ve been rocking a starter beater wanna be Les Paul still a good guitar but now it’s time to shift gears to the next stage.

i want to try this one. i want to see how the satin finish feels on the skin. i am playing only my glossy finish kelly and i want another guitar at this point. something less pointy so i can move it around more easily. this one looks insane. i like that it is so simply looking. it is in a way refreshing. i don't know why. it looks at home, both at a jazz bar and at a metal concert.
