Mahalo nui loaTim! I used to live at #1 Lava Tree Road right next door to the park. Ahalanui warm pond was one of our favorite places where I would take almost all my visiting friends and family members. I shared with them "Trusting" there: letting your loved one gently hold you behind your shoulders and neck as slowly they guided you floating around the pond...all the time softly whispering how much you loved who you held...then reversing this! I told them this was an ancient Hawaiian tradition between lovers for reaffirming their vows to each other. Sometimes, late at night, I would visit the pond with my ever faithful Alaskan Malamute, "Siskiyou", and we would go for swims together there. Siskiyou especially loves playing at the shute where the pond's waters flowed out into the ocean...that and cruising the Malama Ledges for all the great swimming pools to be found along the Ledge; his spirit is a companion now for Madam Pele. What Pele gives Pele takes away, but never not giving back something in return...we must have patience as she reveals to use all the new aina she has...constantly flows to us. Aloha oi!

A compelling reason for moving to Puna, the amazing hotponds, a great place to hangout in the afternoons and enjoy the warmth and healing of the ocean water, now the Hot Ponds are gone, and so am I, sad to see... but Thailand is now my home and an amazing place it is... Aloha Ahalanui Hot Ponds for allowing me to share your warmth and aloha... I shall never forget, Thanks for the memories Mr. O'hara.

This is a beautiful memorial to Ahalanui, as well as Champagne Pond, Tim. I used to dream of a warm, safe place to swim in the winter and feel so blessed to have found these two for 13 years. I am homesick for a home that no longer exists. Mahalo from Indiana and Florida.

I cried everytime I thought of the destruction. Heartbreaking. Those beautiful swimming spots were my favorites on Earth. Aloha from central Florida.

Such awesome contrast with the steam. I remember riding the boat out from the ramp the the day after the lava hit the champagne ponds and the ocean entry was miles wide. Was unbelievable seemed like it never ended

Your video is beautiful but I get so sad watching it. What does this area look like now in 2021? Pohoiki now has a huge black sand beach and it looks like it is still growing.
