Corrupt Dialysis Industry Exposed... "How to Make a Killing" Book Review. Tom Mueller has written an excellent book about corruption in the dialysis industry called "How to Make a Killing."
The book lays out the story of dialysis from its invention around the time of World War 2 to its eventual coverage by Medicare in 1972.
The book goes on to chronicle the consolidation of many dialysis companies into two... DaVita and Fresenius, which control over 80% of the US dialysis market.
The book describes the abuses against dialysis patients including being abandoned by their dialysis center when they speak up about their care.
Lessons from "How to Make a Killing"
1. Vulnerable patients are exploited when A) there is a lack of competition or B) regulatory capture dissuades the government from protecting patients they way it should
2. Individual Advocacy--speaking up, making others uncomfortable, being the 'squeaky wheel'--is necessary to improve a patient's dialysis care.

Been on dialysis over 10 years. Been kicked out of centers and refused treatment for raising concerns. Went to three evaluations for transplant. All three surgeons say I'm a perfect candidate. 'Social workers' want to know how I will pay for everything after three years. So no transplant. I'm stuck doing this and dealing with hostile medical profession until I'm dead. Do not qualify for Medicaid!

Thanks for this excellent overarching example, based on Tom Mueller's book "How to Make a Killing". It is reflective of Warren Buffet's description of the U.S. Healthcare System as a Tapeworm on our economy and a threat to our national competitiveness. From what I have observed this is enabled by the symbiotic relationships between all the elements of the Medical Industrial Complex generating a Fly Wheel of Greed. Unsustainable and ripe for disintermediation and disruption. As you commented, we need more squeaky wheels and to raise public awareness of how we are being exploited, enabled by regulatory capture and borderline or blatant violations of antitrust laws and demand reforms be made to stop feeding the beast, before it is too late.

The trend for Fresenius seems like they may have been too aggressive in their expansion. They would open units in proximity to one another and some of the units are not filled. They have closed some units that are not filled and are not aggressively buying /opening new units right now it seems.

There's nothing wrong with making a profit but I just can't understand how these senior managers are so unnecessarily nasty, cruel and greedy. Don't they have blood in their veins? Don't they have family members that they worry this might happen to?
