Those Advent speakers launched a lot of us into the stereo journey. I remember those in the early 1970s. That's what got me into Audio, my neighbor had those hooked to an old Fisher Tube stereo receiver.

These were my first good audio speakers back in 1974. They sounded awesome for their price and I loved listening to them. They powered quite a few dorm room parties. My Magnavox receiver was their undoing. These are 4 ohm speakers and the Magnavox was only rated for 8 ohms. After about 6 years, the Magnavox shorted out and took one of the speakers with them.

One thing that i did a couple years ago while glueing the surround is plug the speaker to a stereo on a low volume level while glueing the surround to make sure the voice coil ain't rubbing the magnet's center metal stem experimenting pushing the speaker cone to one of the sides until the sound has no anomalies

Henry Kloss invented both. Advent was after KLH so don't know what they changed but I have the large walnut Advents that need woofer repair but still play great. Thanks for this video. I have a whole new set of woofers for them that fit perfectly but haven't done the work.

Great job on the repair. I have a couple of pairs needing this as well. The capacitors once old can lead to damaged tweeters . The way you have them playing at low volume with light jazz no damage will happen. Push them loud with modern high treble they might eventually heat up and be damaged. I've seen a few budget loudspeaker with standard caps in the crossover. Obviously they won't last as long just saying it has been done and even in 1960 speakers.

Thanks for the show. A couple notes... 1. Capacitors will make a big diff. 2. These speakers need an amp with big time headroom. They sound great on something like a Sansui 80W+ amp. 3. If you have an old turntable, remove the spindle and arm, and use the platter as a lazy Susan to spin your speaker around on.

Great video! I wasn't going to comment, but when you said the surrounds were a strange size it reminded me of when I re-foamed my Sansui SP-3500's. I used a Cerwin/Vega surround and had to cut it down by 1". The original Sansui surrounds were made of some kind of rubberized fabric and they get really stiff after 50+ years. I re-capped the crossovers and added binding posts. The difference was unbelievable. I have a pair of Sansui SP-2500's that I bought in '72 and I think I'll try the brake fluid trick to loosen the surrounds.

In the future I would highly recommend using a brush and dabbing the glue in after the surround is in place. In the past I've done thousands of speaker surround repairs. What I've found to work the best is to put the surround in place and use a brush to spread adhesive on the foam and seat it to the cone. That way you don't have to worry about how fast the glue cures. It's also a bit more of a surgical procedure as opposed to dabbing it on the back or front of the cone depending on the model you're working on. It's also a good idea to ware gloves that can be changed out when they get too sticky.

Another vote for doing the crossovers. I bought a pair of advent legacy two speakers in the mid 80s. I had to replace the caps in the crossovers cause they were blown around the year 2000. About a year and a half ago I had to reform them. They sound pretty good. I have read that it takes about 100 hours of fairly high volume to really loosen up the new foam. Haven’t got that far yet.

Thanks for this post - I would like to see a new cap's compare! Dogs are such, dogs. A really GREAT thing we did with "the Advent" speakers back in the '70's was to stack two on top of each other so there were four speakers in a stereo pair. This REALLY made them dramatically better. Depends on the power rating of the amp at the calculated resulting impedance as to if you put these in series or in parallel, Same may work wonders with this Advent model.

My Infinity Monitor Jr.’s were referred to as ‘transmission line loaded’ with respect the damping in the cabinet, ported, but with heavy, dense spun white material. They wound that material around the woofer terminal leads as well, like your Baby Advents.

I use a small flat stick to move the foam surround into place. Use disposable gloves to do this gluing and positioning. I energize the voice coil with a small current limited DC voltage to hold the voice coil in a centered position when doing the final position of the surround edges. You don't want a voice coil rubbing.

I think you're right about the capacitors. Old electrolytics decrease in capacitance value and increase in ESR which will raise the -3dB crossover frequency leaving a "hole" in the midrange response which won't sound so good! If you replace them with electrolytics you need to use non-polarized (NP) caps or they will be destroyed by the ac signal. If you don't have NP caps you can make a non polarized cap out of polarized caps just use two that have twice the value you desire and connect them in series but with the center leads being the same negative polarity (i.e. pos neg neg pos). Sounds wrong but that's how it works. Physics, you know!😁

Great video on the how to repair the foam. However there is a concern that would be helpful for you in the future foam replacement, or even a new rubber one. yes the voice coil is held place pretty well with the spider as the voice coil but ant top movement can still make the speaker rub, the very best way is to open the voice center area of the speaker and use shims like pieces of clear laminate. On the first ones I did these parts came with the kit including a center parts as well. Now the other method is to wire the speaker up and play some music through it and wiggle the cone edge from side to side, till you find the very center of no rubbing. Then tack those parts corners first. Yes, it is true as long as the factory job was done well and you get your foam part centered it will be just fine like the ones you did here, and with the unique center part; finding a similar one or re-gluing it could be a problem or it will not look or sound the same way.. To often people throw out a good speaker just because the foam edge went bad, or they go to a hard edge, or a rubber one and the sound is just not the same, unless it was designed that way. Rubber or harder paper edge speaker often need more power to make them work well on the bass end, too..

Yeah....Advent are high on my list. New foams and caps and they sound fantastic. I like the large advents the best. A chissel works really well to remove the old glue on the surrounds. I use a AA battery with leads to center the voice coil when gluing the surrounds. Works every single time. You cannot offer an opinion on speakers if you have not replaced the caps and given them time to break in.

IMHO the best value in a loudspeaker ever made. What a great find. The bass on these is incredible. It is rumored that this was Henry Kloss's favorite design. They could not afford to continue manufacturing these at this price point and no one wanted them more expensive. And the "spit wad" dust cap on the woofer is ABSOUTELY essential. Don't ever think about replacing those. Henry's philosophy: "simpler is better" but Henry is to me, one of audio' history's greatest and most tragic figures. He left Advent to pursue what he thought was the future of television, Video Projection TV. NOT! He should have stuck with audio because when he finally came back with Cambridge Soundworks, they sucked. I listened to a pair of the original Ensemble against a pair of vintage KLH 17s and the latter ate the Cambridge for lunch. So sad. Also, these are 4 ohm speakers so be careful about doubling up. What a great match for an original NAD 3020A!

I've re-foamed three sets of speakers over the years. And I've had good luck with Simply Speakers for all three refurbs. The last was a month ago for some KLH Research 10 Series, Model CB-10. An online guy at Simply Speakers helped me find the right ones because the correct ones weren't listed. I believe all three times involved cleaning the glue off of the bare metal. And you hint in the video about just how much work this can be (and it was, particularly so for the KLH). But it has to be done. But I've never done one where the foam goes underneath. That looks very very difficult. It's a process that anyone can do with some patience. Like you, I used my finger to spread the glue instead of the brush - and I had a second set of hands to help. But the brush probably would work fine too. I didn't think to change the capacitors but maybe down the line sometime.

To safely remove the remnants of old glue and part of the suspension, you need to moisten them with acetone. It dissolves glue and all residues are easily removed with a clerical knife. And your removal method is unsafe, you can easily damage the speaker. Also, acetone degreases the surface on which the glue will be applied, which will then allow you to better glue the new suspension to the speaker diffuser.

I run a 15-20hz sinewave test tone to woofers when I do a refoam. For some gentle excursion. To make sure there's no possibility for voicecoil rub. And I press down on the new suspension with the speaker gasket, if it has it (clamps), when gluing the new foam to the chassis. If you don't have speaker gaskets lying around. Anything will do as long as it fits the outer part of the suspension. But be warned though. Once you master the art of speaker refoaming/reconeing. It may hook you 4 life, it's crazy addictive, probably even worse than heroin 😂 😏 haha, try it. It makes thrifting broken speakers very profitable.
