Ahmad Jamal passed away today (16 April 2023), but his music will live forever. This video of "Poinciana" has to be one of the greatest performances in jazz history, played impeccably by all four musicians. It's a perfect example of Jamal's "less is more" philosophy that went unappreciated early on. I've listened to it dozens of times, and it still takes my breath away.

The most genius part about this is the harmony and balance. No one really overpowers anyone else in the ensemble. They all listen to and follow Jamal perfectly. The drummer never overpowers them, nor does the accessory ever become too heavy. This is a perfect performance of a perfect piece.

AHMED JAMAL …The World`s greatest Jazz Pianist ( IMV) passed away yesterday. He was 92. I have been listening to his music for over six decades. I watched and thoroughly enjoyed three of his live performances, once at New York, once in Paris, and once at our very own Total Environment Music Foundation, Bangalore. He was close to my son `Kamal Sagar` who almost went all the way to New York to meet him last week, but was dissuaded from coming by Ahmed Jamal, as he didn`t want to be seen in his condition. We met him at length during the Paris Show and Kamal invited him to perform in Bangalore. He readily agreed. When he was in Bangalore, I spoke with him at length and told him how I enjoyed his music starting with his album `Free Flight`, we even discussed philosophy and I gave him my book `SIX WORDS`. His version of Poinciana is the best version (IMV) of this popular number. May his soul rest in peace.

When I first heard the original Ahmad Jamal "Live" album I'd jut been discharged from the Army (Vietnam Era), wa still a young man, and had ass yet to formulate a coherent way forward into the civilian world I'd been drafted out of two years earlier. It was this song, "Poinciana" that acted as a kind of lens, giving me a deep and romantic focus about life's possibilities. When I look back (and forward!!!) of its effect upon my life, along with great Jazz classics of the era, apparently the music worked very well...

@CecilDSouza

Can I ask what is 'beatnik'?. Did you mean music which had a beat and was atuned to the ear?. This version is perfect, and in time!!
@LTJR.
@LTJR. 4 жыл бұрын
@@CecilDSouza beatniks were hippies, counterculture, outsiders from the normal nine-to-five workforce. Caricatured by sandals, dashikis, bell bottom pants, dark glasses, strings of beads, and a hat that went by many names such as a stroker, dai, a duffer, duckbill...I think there is a name that is more popular and describes the hat better but I'm just thinking of all the esoteric ones. The beatnik would be the antithesis of the Republican, the polar opposite of Richard Nixon. The beatnik may have been overheard using phrases like Cool Daddy-O in movies, and I can dig it, far out, out of sight, in real life. I guess the word beat may play into it a little as it's a good chance there were bongo drums around, and music played a definite large part in the culture. I lived in that. But I was a kid

He was one with the music. Every now and then, an artist has the ability to have us transcend into the venue. Every time I LISTEN to this, I am intentional and am front row and center. That feeling is why we imbibe the art form. This is easily a Top 5 video as it is Top Shelf. Long live the gift of impeccable music. Gonna miss Ahmad.

He has a wonderful smile and laughter while he's enjoying his inner spirit while I see this video. When I saw Ahmad at Jazz Alley a number of years ago he was still that young jazz warrior full of the warrior and so much appreciated by everyone for sure. Seattle loves Ahmad Jamal. Your name is a household word!

Superb. Just Superb. Incredible timing mixed with a little swing and double beats with compliments from Jamal that keeps resonating in the mind. And then the drummer ..well... and the guy the on the maracas .. Did I have to tell you about the double bass?. America, I am originally from India and how can you kill my mind with such complex sounds and perfect timing!!

I first hear his But Not For Me album in 1958 at the age of 10, and it has been one of my all time favorite albums ever since. I still have my copy of the 1958 issue of the album, and although somewhat scratchy, it is one of my personal treasures.

We went crazy over this as high school students in the mid 50's. Personally, at age 75, I'm still going crazy over Mr. Jamal's music. Keep swingin, my man.

From the time I could hear, I was listening to Pittsburgh's revolutionary musicians building the new musical art history of America in my neighborhoods. The first record I remember holding in my hand was a 78RPM recording of Ahmad Jamal playing "Poinciana" on one side and "Billy Boy" on the other. My father received it from his good friend who was once known locally as Fritzie Jones, shortly after it was recorded. Every night I'd fall asleep to the muffled but rich, deep tones of the Radiola-Electrola RE-57 console resonating the soothing jazz downward through the floor of Mr. & Mrs. Bailey's apartment above ours. Those were the most incredible of times, those artists being workmen hewing the cornerstone of global music's future.
