Hi Ahmed, I'm kind of getting bugged about your perspective on 'student loans' and I wanted to say something before you get ahead of yourself. Even though what you are saying that this is adequate for students who can't afford to pay for college classes, in consideration to that we shouldn't be comparing it college, instead to what is far more accessible to these days online, such as Keinan Lafferty and Cubebrush. They have made effective ways of making things cheaper WITH tutorials surrounding character design. Lots of guys on here probably down have part time or casual work to go by, I've been at intensive classes around Australia ranging from 500-700 a week AUD, 9am-6pm. It is physical access in the studio, and I once had a free pizza friday inclusive to no extra fees. We aren't saying this is slack and that he price is so disproportioned, it's basically because guys here ranging from 15-25 probably can't afford to pay this.
@AhmedAldoori7 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I can't offer free pizza with this course, however; There's a solid argument to say that it does compare to a college course, especially because; the whole class is structured specifically like the learning experience I give at Art Center College of Design, with a very carefully planned curriculum of everything I believe is necessary for foundations in characters. I've designed each chapter so it carries you through the process, forcing you outside the comfort zone and in the end walking away with the skills necessary to augment your character designs. It's different from the sources you mentioned regarding tutorials, the key element being I will be there guiding you with your work with direct feedback, as well as weekly discussions in Live sessions. (We actually just finished today's live session, which was open mic so we could all hear each other). Regarding the price; you may indeed find tutorials online for really cheap, say, $15 of a character design + speedpaint or something. That's not what I am offering in my course (although there is extras that include that in some chapters). It's a curriculum that can certainly be invented elsewhere, and you can learn a lot of things from books as well - but the difference is that I am putting my effort to guide you through it and make it very very easy for you to understand. It's an investment for yourself. It's 8 weeks of lectures, including two weeks of extra time for feedback and review with myself, providing insight on what to improve and how to take your portfolio further depending on your goals (whether it's movies, video games, comics, or anything else). You get out of it what you put in, and if it's not for you then I totally understand!
@quos78467 жыл бұрын
You're a great artist and I'm sure that your classes are better than college but she is right, your classes are for rich people only, maybe you should be inspired by schoolism from Bobby Chiu or Sakimichan on patreon to find a way for those who can't afford 700$. I'm sure you can make 2 options, one with a law price (cours without feedback etc) and one with a high price (with feedback etc). For example I like your tutorial on gumroad it's affordable.
@Cherbertify7 жыл бұрын
Here's a different take on ideas (Because I presume you're doing 2-3 hours a week then additional feedback for your class) Such as Anthony Jones. On his website he's offering two days a week, 6 hours in total w/ feedback (no portfolio submission required, anybody is welcome to join). His way of adjusting to the livestream is to meet at a midway point so everyone can be happy, from starter ups to more experienced. Now, that goes for one month, but in consideration to how he'll be spending 4 days a week between two different classes on this makes it incredibly flexible for everyone to get what they want especially if they're from overseas. They also don't miss out on content, videos will be provided if missed livestream. What I understand, you'll be covering the basics on how to grasp silhouettes and shapes etc. Why do you need pre-requirements for the course? I'm genuinely interested, do you just mean to cover it with people who grasp design already?
@AhmedAldoori7 жыл бұрын
Well I'd say you're undermining the importance of the curriculum and generalizing/belittling it to being just basics of silhouettes and shapes - while that's certainly included, there is so much more. The curriculum is golden information that I wish was taught to me when I was learning the fundamentals, and with the way the content is structured, you end up catalyzing the learning process specifically for Character Design (more subjects to come later; Perspective, Painting, Composition, Production Design, Color Theory etc). It's more than weekly insights or sketch overs, it's the part of learning that forces discomfort and a lot of necessary failure, by doing specific assignments at a specified number, in a specific order of content delivery (the same way I teach at Art Center, and I will be sharing a lot of student work as before/after my "program" and way of teaching). Regarding portfolio requirements, that part is not up to me. That was already a part of the system before they contacted me to teach the course. This is not to say I don't plan on doing my own thing that will be far more accessible, such as Patreon (which I've done before with public Patreon critiques that have helped many; see my previous videos, I've decided to stop Patreon for now so I can re-invent how to deliver valuable content), certainly offering very useful content to help anyone at any level - however it wouldn't be the same as a fully designed curriculum with weekly assignments. Not to mention, I still give out a plethora of free content on KZbin that has helped hundreds of thousands of people judging by the view counts, comments, likes, being tagged in artwork that used my techniques etc - a valid testament to how I convey information and make it extremely easy to understand for anyone. I get the impression that you feel I'm purposely excluding a lot of people, but on the contrary I do want to help as many people who want to learn - it just so happens that I am currently collaborating with CGMA and their system of running things, so I can learn the process before I do my own thing.
@AhmedAldoori7 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying, and I do have plans to do things like this. However, this is currently under contract with CGMA as a specific course exclusive to their company. I don't have the authority to give out a lower priced version without feedback or anything like that. I am currently doing this as a way to perfect the curriculum structure and indeed will be making things far more accessible - even though I'm still making free content for KZbin anyway.

im interested in the class but i noticed that you need to either do a previous class at cgma or submit a portfolio. how tough are the portfolio requirements? i think i have a decent foundation of drawing but little knowledge on designing (which is why i want to take the course)
@annazolotukhina25357 жыл бұрын
I didn't find an infromation that you should submit a portfolio before taking the class. Copied it from their site: REGISTRATION PROCESS: NEW STUDENTS (i.e. those who've never taken a class with us): First Step: Fill out the registration form then proceed to payment and you will get a payment confirmation receipt. Second Step: You will receive your classroom log in credentials in another email in order to get into the classroom and update your profile. It can take up to 24 hours for you to receive the classroom credentials or for the class to show up in your student profile. If you do not receive it you must email us. Please note that lectures and other classroom functions will be available only on the class scheduled starting day. Third Step: You will also receive a welcome email from your instructor and CGMA within the week prior to the course to start. If you have any questions or would like to send in a portfolio to us, please send it to 2d.registration@cgmasteracademy.com. Though portfolio reviews are not required, our Student Adviser would like to help you figure out classes before you sign up if you aren't already following a program.

I have some questions for this: does it take a lot of English to understand the course? (For those who are not native speakers of the language) This course is for those who draw through tutorials or some books independently without having gone to an institute before? Does it serve people who are interested in the anime style of Japanese anime? And the last serious if I can sign up yet or this has a deadline after that can not be accessed anymore?

Actually at first the price shocked me but after some thinking it makes sense. I am studying Visual communications and to be honest, I haven't learnt shit from my university course. And for that garbage I pay 2000usd every semester. It's baffling how much I learnt from just Ahmed and Sinix. Keep in mind that's just 10 to 30 minute videos. I will never understand why people think art should be free. Ahmed is a very good teacher and I don't think you'd regret paying that at all. If I wasn't already in so much debt for a degree course that's teaching me nothing, I'd gladly join this. Yes, each week there is a specified lecture that includes a homework assignment. There is also weekly Live Q&A sessions with myself if you have any questions or concerns, as described in this video. You could spend (x) amount of hours on the homework depending on how much mileage you want to get out of it, but roughly speaking to understand the weekly material effectively would be 3-5 hours to play it safe.

Will you get any other real credential other than a pretty Portfolio? This is a big point of worth here.
@CJSwitz7 жыл бұрын
The entire industry (AFAIK) only really cares about your portfolio/demo reel. Credentials might help get them look at your portfolio, but they will hire you based on that portfolio. Credentials are only sort of important under certain circumstances where your portfolio is peripheral to the position (i.e. applying to a graphic design position with an animation portfolio), but I'm not even sure about that. To use a metaphor, if it were a university application, your portfolio is your raw marks, whereas your credentials are your extra-curricular activities, awards, etc. The raw mark/portfolio is what truly matters. Disclaimer: My knowledge comes from second hand sources in the VFX industry, so I may be a bit off.
@GabeDelaSoul7 жыл бұрын
I wish we lived in a world where this is true at all times in every work space. But sadly, some people don't even bother giving you a job without having at least some type of credential. I use this word as its root, credibility. To say that you've been fixing cars for a living and you learned from a mentor does not mean you'll get hired by a company after taking pictures of said fixed cars. This is all I imply, but I stand with you, fancy titles are stupid and talent is all that matters, I just hope the world is as utopic as your second hand source says it is.
@0MOLOTOV7 жыл бұрын
Gabriel De laSoul it depends what job you're going for. in concept art and game visual development you need more than a pretty portfolio. you need knowledge of both 3d and 2d, and you'll probably need a decent amount of experience to even be considered most of the time. they wouldn't give a job to someone with a worse/smaller portfolio just because they had more certificates.
@AhmedAldoori7 жыл бұрын
CGMA Gives certificates for completing classes, I'm not sure if it's only one class or a specific track of classes. However, I would like to mention that degrees/certificates/credentials aren't really something to worry about, assuming you're interested in the concept art/illustration industry. It's about the portfolio - I've worked at many places at very well paid rates, and they never asked or cared to know what degrees I had. They see your work, and want to make money off of your skills, assuming the skill level qualifies for the job. Deee also mentioned that you need to know 3D and 2D - while that's definitely a benefit if you know both, it's not required. I've worked on movies/VFX, theme park design, and video games (ArenaNet) and never had to use 3D. But there were artists there that did use 3D, and were more valuable because of it. It's about what you can bring to the table, and a certificate isn't going to bring a company more revenue from their clients/demographic; your skills will.

700usd=900aud Andrew Loomis books: Roughly range from $40 I can buy 22 books for the value of 900
@AhmedAldoori7 жыл бұрын
Yes! You are totally right, you can definitely get those books at a really affordable price! In fact, I have those books, and learned quite a lot from them. However, what you don't get is an experienced artist there with you guiding and providing direct feedback and direction - as well as a specific curriculum designed to make it very streamlined to understand. Either way is perfectly great, I continually study from materials like Loomis and teach myself that way. It's up to you if you want to engage in this kind of opportunity or not. Cheers!
@Cherbertify7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you're taking this so lightheartedly. It is valuable to get some insight from someone who has had experience, but this isn't the most effective way unless someone is a real big fan of your work and wants to learn. I've had lots of great artists such as John Navarez and Kekai Kotaki fly over and teach a weeks worth of content, with personal interaction and a lot of feedback! I wouldn't guarantee it as the 'cheapest' way to go about it, so comparing it to a years worth of college to me is like saying "Why buy the full package of content you want to learn for a whole year when I can satisfy you a portion of this much within a few weeks" For some students such as myself, I'm very lucky to say I have a stable casual job to keep me afloat and student help fees to back up my student loans, but that might not be achievable for some others. Thanks for responding :)
@ringoyapper7 жыл бұрын
I don't think he took anything lightheartedly at all and has responded appropriately. In fact, your first comment is almost rude ("Now that I think about it, imagine how many Andrew Loomis and figure drawing books I can buy with that money") by comparing the amount of books you can buy against a professional, catered course with personalized feedback and instructor guidance (apples to oranges). I'm not even sure what you're trying to argue here? That his course is too expensive? That you can take other courses/options for cheaper? It's almost similar to getting mad at an artist for charging a specific commission price versus another artist who charges less. He's providing a service for a price he feels is appropriate for his knowledge and skill. If you don't agree, then don't take the course. He doesn't even control the cost of the course, CGMA does. Schoolism/Concept Design Academy have similar instructor-led courses that are roughly around the same price. This is someone who has an entire KZbin channel with dozens of instructional videos for free, by the way. I'm almost shocked people are giving him so much noise for charging a certain amount to teach.

Carolyn No you're right! that comment wasn't necessary and a bad comparison. My earlier post was surrounding his thoughts on college to online at courses, and I feel like that phrase about it being cheaper has been thrown around like they're better in value, which isn't necessarily the case. Were summarising the costs of making someone travel day and night, teach from 9-5 in a facility using equipment purchased by the college/ or whether it'd be an enclosed studio provided by the teachers themselves. There is so much to factor with money in regards to that. I didn't say he shouldn't be doing this course for free, I just think in consideration to how everyone is making a point about how expensive it is, it shouldn't be justified to college costs, that alone renting out studios/facilities!

Even if you do anticipate falling dead in a few years, there are thousands of people trying to make their break in the art world even after retirement.

When you want to attend but because of your trash college program that hasn't taught anatomy yet (3 weeks until graduation mind you & 2yrs long) you can't afford it ;u; 30k in debt and they still haven't taught anatomy. I'm dead inside. Make sure you do research before considering college. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
