This video explores how architecture as we know it will never be the same.
I discuss the idea of relinquishing design, a creative task once reserved only for humans, to AI and envision a new potential for creativity in underdeveloped or emerging areas within the architectural discipline. Those emerging agendas will be discussed in future videos, but they are heavily focused on evaluating building systems, materials, and construction techniques in relation to modern day life and the earth.

Totally agree. We need goals and purpose to add meaning to our endeavors. The tools are yet to be determined, and in constant evolution and not the most important to focus on.

Right on. The tool is important. But the purpose/meaning behind our work is essential.

A friend of mine said that if clients can be precise enough to precisely input what they want in a succinct prompt, then architecture design is doomed. But we know that the process of working with clients is never linear. So, grateful we have more tools at our disposal to aide with the design process.

That’s a good one, I heard something like that recently and I definitely agree. I don’t think AI will replace us, but it will definitely change how we design 🤘🏼

You are hardly "designing" though, are you? If I was a client, I would not have a problem coming up with my own succinct prompts, type the words into the computer myself and save myself some money.

I'm an Masters of Architecture student and been using AI (MidJourney) to generate concepts for my thesis, and I've dedicated the entire thesis to explore what the capabilities are and how far you can take Midjourney in architectural processes. It's been interesting to say the least. My project consists of 7 different spaces which all have their own function and programme. But with AI I've been able to explore 7 different architectural styles that I would not have had the time to explore... and I've managed to do it within weeks. The tutors are all on board with me using it as they understand that I'm capable of producing the images myself. But it does leave the door wide open for people to use it without fully grasping the process that goes into it, i.e first year students. Your videos on AI have been a massive help to my process so I appreciate your efforts in producing this content! Thanks!

Really glad to hear this content is helpful for you. Sounds like the perfect case study where you've gained time to further evaluate potentially more important aspects of the project. And yes, I agree, there is some danger in using these tools without understand the complete scope of the architectural discipline, but like anything, simply having access to the tool will not immediately make you an expert. Thanks for watching!

I really dig your point of view. I use AI in my job (game graphics) and over the past year and a half it has made me about five times more productive and at least twice as stressed. I have had to throw hobbies out the window. if I am not totally obsessed with this stuff, working to leverage it beyond the default layer, finding ways to implement it further in the process, then I get an increasingly uneasy feeling that I will be ground up by it. I see so many people around me who are simply oblivious to it and I wonder how many will be in real trouble.

I have that same sense of pressure to stay at the forefront of these quickly evolving tools. As I mentioned in the video, I do think the legacy method of performing tasks will still exist in many regions of the world, but I've seen how society can swallow those who refuse to evolve, so it's definitely an investment to stay up-to-date. Thanks for tuning in!

Great initiative dear! AI and Architects can create wonders. AI only can imagine. But people will need Architects for executing it as it is!

Thank you for this great video! I was particularly captivated by your mention of the exploration of fluidity in the 2000s - it was like opening a time capsule of ideas and experiences. I would love to hear more about this topic. The perspective on the inevitability of change, our partial ability to guide it, and the need for exploration although most of our tests may get lost in time... is not just informative, but genuinely inspiring. It's comforting in the most human sense. Thanks a million for this! Can't wait for the next videos!

If you're interested in the 2000's era Maya work, check out Hernán Díaz Alonso and his early works "Xefirotarch" or his "Exuberance" series. Tom Wiscombe's early works were also a product of freeform exploration. Thanks for tuning in! Your videos are great too! Keep it up 🤘

Architecture as an profession needs an overhaul as it is. A lot of junior design position are going to go away. We train lot more architects than we need as it is. As an practicing architect (12 Years). We are using these tools in our design workflow. For young architects get good at construction technology. Everyone is going to be good at design with these tools. I recently did a large survey thanks to my friends at different permit offices. Let than 10% of the residential projects are done by architects. House plan designers do a better job as they are much more aware of construction tech and the needs of the contractor.
@StephenCoorlas
@StephenCoorlas Жыл бұрын
Interesting - Thanks for sharing about the survey. I do think a new category of architect is emerging that exists between a designer, architect, and contractor which leans heavily on digital fabrication and modeling for the production of architecture. It's starting with facades, but it won't be long before these techniques make their way into structures and larger architectural components. It's already here with 3D printing. Thanks for tuning is and for the insightful comment.

@@StephenCoorlas I have switched from traditional "Architecture" and becoming a specialist Roof Truss Designer. Good balance of Design and Engineering. Get to work on a lot of new designs and get amazing feedback from contractors. A lot of contractors want component wall panel and system layouts. As the materials are getting expensive and finding labour is even more difficult. Whenever I see young designers focusing on parametric or dramatic forms. I think who will build this?? unless your client is a ultra high net worth individual and they will go to a seasoned designer. I am all for form finding but one has to be aware of Supply and demand. Using AI in Concept stage -> Create realistic options -> iterate.. Really enjoy your informative videos. Keep it up.

@@ipshergill That's fair - And I agree. Our profession needs to do a better job at connecting design to the final product. I'm hoping to promote more of that on this channel 🤘
