I’m a portrait artist and I have a computer science degree… my mom died in September and left me buried in debt, and I took on a lot of portrait and character commissions for Christmas hoping to catch up- and that’s when the prequel boom happened. Almost every job canceled or requested their half up front back, or just hit PayPal for a cancel - which sided with them. I know so many people who have had the same things happen to them. I hate my physical appearance so I was refusing to do the content thing myself, but I feel like I just don’t have a choice anymore.

I hear you loud and clear. I feel like when AI started making art, it's like our pet dogs suddenly learned to operate can openers. Yes, it's impressive, but honestly, it's threatening our monopoly on the good stuff! But you know what? Being an artist is not just about putting paint on canvas. It's about breathing life into every stroke. And being a computer scientist, well, that’s being able to do magic with ones and zeroes. So, you, my friend, can breathe life into code. An AI might create art, but can it create a soulful piece that embodies personal struggle, love, or the loss of a loved one? I don't think so. Concerning your physical appearance and doing the 'content thing', remember, it’s the 21st century, my friend! If emojis, Bitmojis, and cartoon profile pictures can be famous, so can you. You might not like your appearance, but you can create an avatar that represents you! Paint a virtual self-portrait, code it to life, and let it be your face to the world. It's the best of both your worlds! Good luck, and remember, every artist was once an amateur. You got this! Ps: I wish you the best of luck with your grief, can't imagine what an impact the death of my mom would have on me. Again, you got this.

@@driesketels supply and demand. It’s difficult to make it brief, but basically in a world where everyone can be a master AI artist quite effortlessly, no one will care about your AI art. And with blockchain technology advancing alongside AI, and with NFTs emphasizing scarcity and authenticity, it will be the genuine artists who stand out for their process above the inauthentically generated work. I think what we’ll actually see in that environment is AI artists competing with one another, and the only way to do so will be to prove their authenticity by sharing their process. But if they want a process that isn’t easy to replicate, they will need to learn the craft the normal way to make their work more human made than machine made. But the work with no AI will be more respected. The conversations will switch from “omg how did you do that” to “omg how did you do that without AI” There are other factors, but I’d be going on for too long. One exception might be things like print on demand where people buy for the utility of the product more than for the art itself.

@ivanadzidic4012 Жыл бұрын
For some artists such a radical switch is not an option. It depends really. Sharing my art online brought zero profit to me. Zero. All of the money I made from art was via comissions. All the comissions I had were from people who actually saw my art hanging on some wall (often my own). So, for me the online posting and stuff was just a waste of my time and energy. However, for some artists the digital world is essential. Digital artists function differently than traditional artists. I honestly feel bad for the digital artists because they are so underappreciated. Lots of them lost their jobs directly to AI. Illustrators and digital artists have been wronged in so many ways.

You can easily go down a rabbit hole in discussions about AI and copyright (issues I'm having to deal with right now, as a matter of fact 🫣), and we are ALL prompt engineers, hahaha! If I go to a coffee vending machine, I enter a 'prompt' when i select the type of coffee, add extra sugar (😎) and milk. Did I make the coffee? No, I did not - the machine did. It's a simplistic analogy, but it illustrates the point. I think your observation on cognitive decline is critical - if we abrogate responsibility for the choices we make, what on 🌎 are our hippocampuses for? Happy to use AI as a workflow tool, but not to make decisions for me. Otherwise, what's the point? Critical thinking gives us enormous agency as human beings, yet we persist in defaulting to what is easy. My apologies to everyone & to you, Dries, if this turned into the ravings of a madwoman 🤪😤😥

Dries, may i ask you a personal question? I was in the process of opening my own studio. I wanted a bigger place to create and to make a dpace for others to come in and create too. My prayer was being answered to be able to bring art to my community so that others could experience art in way that I did and find relief from anxiety, depression, etc.... Art helps me feel closer to the Lord and truly made my heart and soul smile. I felt like I was finally finding myself and so close to doing exactly what God wanted me to do. I was going to have free classes for veterans, senior citizens w/dementia (senior citizen center just down the road), and have classes for beginners to try different medias and experience art in a way that normally they couldn't do without spending a lot of money. I was so full of joy. My husband suddenly put the brakes on it, broke the entire deal, and cancelled it all because he "doesn't understand" or "get it". Every since, I cant. I feel so broken inside. I can't approach a canvas without feeling like an idiot or a failure.... How do you bring yourself back? Find yourself again somehow? Have you ever lost yourself along your journey? I am trying but every time I paint, I hate it. I am to the point that i am genuinely considering the idea of selling everything and just be done. I'm sorry this is so long. I genuinely hope you don't get usoet or annoyed by this question. I'm just at the end of my rope. I am the Creative Director of Vacation Bible School in June, and I do not have a creative thought in myself any longer. 😫😫

First, allow me to extend my heartfelt sympathies for what you're going through. It's apparent that you're facing a particularly challenging time, and I want to affirm that your feelings are valid. We all have periods in our lives where our dreams seem to slip through our fingers, leaving us questioning our worth and abilities. Art, as you've so beautifully articulated, is not just a hobby or a job; it's a lifeline, a conduit through which we connect with the divine, with others, and most importantly, with ourselves. And when that connection is disrupted, it can feel as if we've lost a piece of our very essence. Your vision of opening a studio is a noble one. It's not just about creating art; it's about building a sanctuary where people could find solace, expression, and healing. The world needs more of such spaces, and it's a testament to your generous spirit that you wished to create one. I want to remind you that while your husband's disapproval is disheartening, it doesn't invalidate the worth of your aspirations. Your dreams and your capacity to create are not dependent on another's understanding or approval. It's tough when the people we care about don't 'get' our passion, but this is your journey and it's okay if he doesn't fully understand it. If it brings you joy, if it's what makes you feel alive and connected, it is worthwhile. Now, about your current struggle with creativity. It's completely normal to experience creative blocks, especially when dealing with emotional distress. Don't force yourself to produce something perfect each time you approach the canvas. Art is not just about the final masterpiece, but also about the process - the catharsis, the self-expression, the exploration. Let your pain, your disappointment, your frustration flow onto the canvas. You might surprise yourself with the raw power and emotion that your art can convey in such moments. Remember that even the most celebrated artists have had their share of trials and tribulations. Vincent Van Gogh, for instance, battled severe depression, yet he created some of the most revered works in the history of art. His story isn't a call to romanticize suffering but a reminder that sometimes, our deepest pains can shape our greatest masterpieces. Finally, if you're contemplating selling everything, give yourself some time. Perhaps take a break, a step back, and look after your mental health. Rediscover your love for art in small, unpressured ways - doodling, visiting an art gallery, reading about your favorite artists, or even teaching art casually to a small group of interested individuals. With warmth and understanding, Dries

Even using public transport is much easier using google map to tell u which train to get (though I still get on the wrong train!). Copyright is an interesting issue. In the past hundred of yrs ago it did not exist and everyone kind of copied each other in both music and art. But it kind of worked, probably because one stil’ needed hard hands on work, not copy and past.. And there was no internet then to massively reproduce images etc.

Thanks for your insightful comment! I think we can all relate to the "GPS syndrome." It's gotten to the point where if my GPS told me to drive into a lake, I'd probably question the lake's location before my GPS! Regarding copyright, you're absolutely right. A few centuries ago, artists just couldn't resist "borrowing" each other's ideas-it was the original "share without care" system! They had to physically recreate artworks instead of a simple Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V maneuver. I suppose the internet has made us all very efficient copycats, hasn't it?

Excellent commentary. A few thoughts on this: a) Since AI "art" promoters go hog wild when they see what they think is "creative." I have an idea: Whip up some garbage art, label it as AI-created...you'll have those obsessed over AI "art" raving wildly. This is typical of those who think just because it is "new" it has to be better. In my youth the young [and stupid] reacted the same way over the television show 'The Monkees' [I did too]. The newfangled production style was the wave of the future. Heh. the show ran two years. The producers were thinking of changing the format and style. Yep...that is the 1960s. equivalent of AI "art." That show is mostly forgotten. I Love Lucy; Gilligan's Island; Star Trek continue in reruns to this day. b) About the copyrights. For most of the real artists it will be difficult to get any recourse when their intellectual work, and true creativity is stolen. But for those in big-time movies, music , celebrities and others with big bucks will get theirs...but not the huge majority. Example: do some AI "art" that has a Disney character or two... As for AI as a whole -- a lot of good can come its use, but then so can criminal activity. Not just stealing others copyrighted works but voice synthesizing in order to defraud others out of money, and so on... Artificial Intelligence is a tool. One can take a knife and cut up his steak; or one can take it and slice up the paintings in a local museum.

AI art is fun to do. It can help you conceptualize ideas, and it can be used as a good tool for people that never learned how to draw. I do not disagree with this. The fact of AI art is that it’s not original. It does not come from the mind of someone who has emotions and experiences and preferences and personality. Even if you have a creative vision, AI will never take exactly what you are thinking and generate it. That just isn’t how it works. Every piece of art is original, which means that an original piece of art is unachievable when you are just modeling after others' work. It’s kind of like if you model off of a Pinterest drawing instead of thinking up your own beautiful and unique piece of art. Artists take a lot of time to learn the fundamentals of how to draw, as well as advanced techniques. Artists do what they do because of the passion they have for it. AI generation does not have any passion attached to it. That’s what makes AI, fundamentally, not art. Art comes from passion, emotion, and creative drive. AI doesn’t love it’s drawings and feel satisfied when it finishes a piece. It takes pictures, figures out patterns in the pictures, takes in a prompt, and gives an image. No emotion. The people that generate might feel happy when they put in a prompt and it turns out well, but there is no time or effort or passion or hard thinking attached to it. Artists put passion into their art. They love what they do, and they spend so much time on a drawing because they love art. If you are truly a lover of art and want to make something beautiful, then learn how to, instead of typing into a computer and making it do the work for you. Also, you’ll get better results, if you practice enough. And everything you draw will come straight from your head. Not from a database. So go install krita and buy a metapen off amazon for 30 bucks, if you actually want authentic art. :)

Often true, great art is painful and difficult to create. Great works of literature do not, for the most part, come easily to their creators. The biggest problem with this fascination with AI-generated art, music, or ' literature' is the absence of spirit in any AI product. It is a thing, not a soul. They are algotithms, sequences of instructions used to mimic the creative human. HAL was a fiction, not a reality. The human brain is electro-chemical, the computer brain is only electrical, '1's and-' 0's. It is the chemistry of the human brain that gives it unpredictability. Emotions are generated via brain chenistry, not merely the f firing of synapses in purely electrical sequences. Random number generators are pseudo -random, designed to mimic randomness.

You can do both and it can inspire your real world art. I've been getting my head round Midjourney for about 6 months and am preparing some artworks to put on Saatchi Art. I don't call myself an ai artist but see myself more as an art director with the algorithm being the artist. You are absolutely right, I do believe there is going to be some massive art that will be made with the help of AI, and it's definitely an opportunity for the future. The critique in this video was more towards the superficial use of AI with 3 second prompts and in return calling yourself an artist. But yes, some of the most notable artworks that will be made in the next decade will be made with AI for sure.

By the way, what's the name of the person behind your account? I'm kind of sick of talking to 'invented names'. If you want to stay anonymous that's okay as well of course.

Ai is here to stay for everyone and everything and we will have to get over this like it’s going to sabotage everything we do. It’s only a tool for possibly. You don’t have to use it in your work environment. You have a choice. People who do use Ai to paint or draw is not doing anything wrong by using the software and I don’t think I should be criticizing anyone who uses Ai. We been using Photoshop to edit for years.

Powerful comment. I agree completely with the first part of your comment, it's here to stay. And we have to find ways to incorporate it since the benefits are astonishing. The "People who do use Ai to paint or draw is not doing anything wrong by using the software" statement is a little bit more tricky since there is definitely some ethical concern around the copyright infringement that is happening so... Depending on how you use it you are not doing anything wrong or are in fact doing something 'wrong' in my opinion. I hope we will get some kind of regulation that makes things fair and friendly. We'll see.

Disagree, its actually very good, for youtubers.....so they make their 61th video complaining / promoting it and earn their youtube check.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your perspective. I appreciate the cheeky suggestion that we KZbinrs never pass up a good controversy to spice up our content! Now, since we're on the topic, let's dive into how AI might actually impact KZbinrs like me. First, we can't deny AI has its cool sides. In fact, AI might end up being a KZbinr's best buddy, taking over repetitive editing tasks, optimizing thumbnails, or even helping with SEO and engagement analysis. Sounds like a sweet deal, right? It's like having your very own robot sidekick! But here's where it gets tricky. If AI becomes sophisticated enough, it could potentially automate the entire video creation process. That means AI could pump out content at a rate no human can match. Great for viewers who can never get enough cat videos, but what about us creators who dedicate hours to our craft? Also, consider the inevitable AI-generated KZbinrs who will be able to churn out videos 24/7, never needing breaks or sleep. They won't struggle with writer's block, won't need time off for family events or self-care, and they certainly won't have bad hair days. If that doesn't make a KZbinr nervous, I don't know what will! In a world dominated by AI, authenticity and creativity - the very heart and soul of KZbin - could become lost. You can't program genuine humor, spontaneous reactions, or unique life experiences into an algorithm. An AI might be able to mimic these qualities, but it's just not the same. So yes, while I can chuckle at the idea of making my 61st video on the same topic, the reality of AI's impact on KZbinrs could be less amusing. The challenge for us is to stay one step ahead, evolving and adapting, always reminding viewers of the irreplaceable value of human connection in our content. I hope this adds another perspective to our discussion. And hey, here's to video number 62! 🎥🥳

The critique is very one sided and the most glaring irony is this content creator is using the tools and benefits of modern technology to create and distribute his videos. As with any new technologies there are positives and negative aspects. People with no or little artistic talent who use a.i. to create art are still using their brains to collaborate in a creative process where they otherwise might not have. Just as youtube creators are making videos that wouldn't have been produced if they had to get out there with their analog movie cameras. A I. Is a 'double edged sword ' for sure, just like the wheel, the cellphone, the television, the computer and everything else we enjoy in this age. It is only going to advance so perhaps a more objective perspective would be of value.

Interesting viewpoints, definitely something true about what you are saying. What is your opinion on the copyright infringement and art theft that is happening?
@gravesbruce Жыл бұрын
@@driesketels i don't like it but I haven't seen any evidence if direct copyright infringement of a specific image. The systems are being trained on copyrighted images for sure, but what is actually created is inspired by those images and may look similar in some cases but is not a direct copy. If you put an a.i. image in Google images you won't see that image come up as copied from an original version so its doing what artists do anyways and have always done which is copy other artists styles and inspirations but in a more comprehensive way. I may be wrong but I haven't seen any side by side comparisons of art thats been copied.
