Quick update: Shortly after watching this video, I gave up using shampoo. That was about 16 months ago or so. I have to report that my scalp and hair are better than ever. No dry scalp/dandruff. No "greasy" hair. Everything talked about in this video is true it would seem. Most importantly, it seems I have less grey hair than before (for context, I am in my mid 50s). So I can say without hesitation that shampoo is a farce. Just wash your hair regularly as usual, but just use water. I saved enough that I recently bought a new car. (Just kidding. That's what I do tell people though, just to see the look on their faces. (But I did but a new car 😂)

Yeah it's good that he mentions it because his way definitely doesn't work for everyone. Unless people are into hair care they think you need to wash their hair a lot which us just wrong. Once you get into hair care it is very easy to understand why washing your hair a lot is bad. This video is unfortunately not very informative when it comes to hair care and the science behind it. He is spreading a lot of misinformation. It's like a misinterpreted tip of the iceberg of how hair care should function. But at least he reached the tip of the iceberg...

He's also leaving out the fact that you're supposed to CONDITION lol if you just shampoo then your hair is gonna be DRY af and that's the job of conditioners to reapply moister into your scalp/hair. You can have soft, non-greasy, healthy hair while still washing and it just seems like he has more of a fixation on his betrayal by Head and Shoulders just being a garbage product lol... which i didn't think it was something that needed to be said. This isn't an attack on him even though it probably comes out that way, but i'm just trying to say that Companies are gonna advertise... just because it's a garbage product that they make doesn't mean Big Shampoo is out to brainwash the general populace to spend more on something they "don't need". Just do your research and figure out what's best for you instead of mindlessly buying products and feeling bitter over it. That's all

When we were children, shampoo had not yet arrived in India. Twice a week we had to oil our hair and then wash it off using chickpea flour or soapnut powder. When a senior relative was gifted shampoo from the US, she would use it to wash the table or other things in the house, saying she was not sure what it would end up doing. We yearned to use some of it as shampoo. Perhaps i will now go back to coconut oil and chickpea flour

@@frozenburrit053 note that he was also putting pomade in his hair; if someone doesn't even need to use a conditioner because their hair is healthy on its own, and just uses a shampoo, and has long hair where the oily roots look a bit... obvious, then no shampoo won't work for them - or at least, it won't make them look acceptable for today's looks standards (while his hair do look styled and modern), because while such short hair can look so shiny and, well, oily without looking gross (when they are styled, and everyone assumes it's this expensive styling product), long hair with oily roots look "unclean" and is harder to put in various styles (possibly easier to put in other styles, too). So I'm a hairdresser - in you are kinda right, but not 100%. Shampoos with Sodium Lauryl sulphates (SLS) will strip out the natural oils, as it is basically a detergent. Yes it causes your scalp to become dry .... because it has stripped your natural oils. Your sebaceous glands become dehydrated and to deal with it - produce more oils. So that creates a cycle which isn't healthy for your scalp or hair. I wash my hair every 7 to 10 days ... I use a shampoo, but without the SLS stuff, and recommend it to my customers because it also will not strip out the colour they have paid me to apply ! Conditioners - well a shampoo will open up the outer layer of your hair, and a conditioner closes it back, but with longer hair, it also helps add oils that may be missing, due to the hairs age - and what we do to it. Not all contain silicones - and they are bad for it. The 3 companies you mentioned - yup they have marketed to people and produced an empire from it ... which is based on things that are not fundamentally always the case for people. Toothpaste - you don't NEED it, to get your teeth clean, you just need to apply friction - to remove any build up matter - that can be with a toothbrush or those dental sticks etc Toothpaste just makes the experience taste nicer. (I also have 12 years of medical experience, which included some dentistry) Good video - I enjoyed it. I personally can't get away without using a shampoo due to a form of dandruff (there are many types), but I do encourage all my customers to wash their hair less often ! It hurts my shampoo sales, but over all - makes for better healthier hair, with colours that last longer (which also costs me money lol)

After a while I forgot to do it for over two months and I was totally fine while having an consistent look. Now I only wash them with water, except when I get a haircut every six weeks. Thanks for sharing your story. I have recently stopped washing my hair as much because I noticed some hair loss and itching. It's interesting to say that washing it less or not at all has reduced the itching significantly. I know there were times when I washed my hair everyday that I developed dandruff. So there is definitely some science involved in the experiment. Washing your hair and skin too much is definitely not good. On the issue of hand washing... You strip your skin of natural oils and they become dry and itchy. You are definitely on to something and there is definitely a lot of psychological issues involved in the marketing of many products. Again, thanks for your honesty and sharing your experiences.

@@natyqueen - just remember that the ‘cold turkey’ approach isnt for everyone... i wash once a week, and that took me a while to work up too.. The ‘no poo’ movement works because of friktion - people use ‘thinner’ conditioners to use in their Hair while scrubbing, because of the slip it creates... The biggest thing to remember is that to clean Hair without shampoo needs more time... because you use only your fingers and water to lift and remove exces oils.... Oh and be carefull with too hot water, that is also a reason for dryness....

if you eat natural unprocessed organically grown foods you won’t smell bad. bad bacteria grows due to the consumption of too much sugar from processed foods. your body needs sugar for energy but fruit based sugars, fructose opposed to sucrose is ideal. it’s important to have the right bacteria in your stomach eating foods like organic yogurt & organic sauerkraut (probiotics) green bananas (prebiotics) same thing w your skin, as it has a biome as well that needs to stay balanced.

Definitely it's a lie. In fact, most personal grooming habits we take for granted now weren't practiced until the 1970's when Madison Ave. started bombarding us with ads for shampoo, soap, perfume, and shaving products and convinced us that we had to shower every single day. A few years later, when our skin was drying out from too much showering, they sold us moisturizers! You have to admit, they didn't miss a trick. Each problem caused by the previous ad campaign was solved by another until we were buying hundreds of products we didn't need and that we'd be better off without.

@@eruno_ No he taught me about climate change and about the balance of ecology too. So I was surprised that many didn’t know this when Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” released in 2001. He taught me early on to question my assumptions about everything. Everyone assumes the Earth’s climate has always been this stable but it hasn’t. We had a rare 10,000 year period of stable climate that gave birth to new inventions like farming. With more food produced, more members of the civilizations could focus on education and furthering the species bit by bit. He taught me that the Earth is delicate and beautifully balanced and how we’re tipping that balance just by telling me to question my assumptions. So I apply this same “question my assumption” analogy with marketing, life and pretty much everything 😂 After awhile, it becomes intuitive and it’s probably why I’m invested into crypto 🪄 #BanksAreZeros.

Native Americans actually have different hair from people of predominantly European descent. If I recall their hair is similar to that of East Asians. Most women I've known who are of European ancestry actually don't wash their hair every day, usually once or three times a week since European hair is actually pretty fragile. There's a couple with a KZbin channel called "Rachel & Jun", the husband is Japanese and his wife is a ginger American. Gingers have very fragile hair and they actually mentioned that he was a bit freaked out that she didn't wash her hair every day. If she did, however, it would become brittle and start to break (she's got very long hair). Japanese people have much stronger hair, probably due to it being more oily or something, I dunno the science. In the same video a bunch of black women said in the comment section that their hair was even more fragile and they had to be very careful about it if it was long. Different requirements for different folks. My ancestry is just typical American bastard, pretty much everything in there, but my mom always told me that the reason I'd probably never lose my hair was because of my Native American great, great grandmother. I dunno, I'm 51 with a full head of annoyingly thick, but blond, hair.

This idea isn't new. A lot of very, very high end stylists say, "Don't use shampoo, unless your need to wash something (ie, hair product) out of your hair." I wash my hair a few times a year, usually only if it has like chlorine in it or something. If you have long hair, wash the ends, not your scalp, and comb your hair after washing to distribute the oils your scalp makes naturally. Soap isn't your skin's friend in general. For your groin, or underarms, yes. Anywhere where bacterial growth, signified by odor, is a thing, yes. Otherwise, no. Soap should be used sparingly, and *never* on your face. Fundamentally, skincare is about PH. If your skin is dry or oily it's overcompensating. When in doubt, let it do it's own thing for awhile and then decide what it needs. Moisturizer with SPF, and a decent cleanser are really all most people need. (Not counting specialty products for wrinkles, pore refining, color correcting, whatever.)

I have almost never used a toothpaste, didn't like it when I was young. But I had times when I did, due to propaganda. As for my conscious decision, I resigned from it in the last decade. I visited like three different dentists in my life (one of them recently) and all of them commented that my teeth is in very good condition or that they are healthier than people of my age. They mostly say I should do descaling more often (to give them money). The main problem with not using a toothpaste is the smell, but you can get rid of it via other means and less sugar & harmful diet. As for shampoos, I stopped using them about 4 years ago. I am satisfied with the result, my hair is just a lil more greasy, the main downside is the pillow that gets less comfy in shorter time and that's mostly it. What else... I use slices of lemons under my arm to get rid of unpleasant smell instead of aluminium salts. While lemon doesn't block sweating that well it is great for getting rid of unpleasant smell and giving freshness under the arm. Also just to remind you, sweating is healthy, so blocking it isn't a solution and might lead to other health problems. They make us dependent on their harmful products. As for TV I don't have one for like 15 years and I am a deeply happy person, every day is a pleasure for me. And sadly almost all people I meet don't share this happiness, maybe because they usually have TV in their homes, use shampoos, toothpaste and aluminium salts among other things. Another manipulation they do recently is getting rid of gluten in their products and advertising it as something healthy, when in reality gluten is something benefical to our health except the small percentage of population that does have problems with it.

A lot of people do that. I hear about people with longer or medium hair, wash their hair like once a week. In the winter I wash mine probably every 7 days, in the summer it’s probably every 3-4 depending if I’m working out or more active. My hair is pretty thick and I get it thinned out. When I was a teenager I tried doing the natural way of washing of my hair and well, it did not work out. I ended up with actual dandruff and then actually caught a case of lice from another girl that never washed her hair.

Oh yeah, its really important to make sure you actually have dandruf and if you do have dandruf it is a fungus and it smells and spreads. It runs down my forehead if i dont wash my scalp every day. I dont soap my hair, but i have to clean my scalp or else.... red bumps all over my face and on my scalp. It basically looks like acne. I get the best results from using a mild shampoo or something that is for cleansing. Im fairly thin but i do come from genetics in which we sweat a lot. I also live in a tropical environment. I have to wash every day or two. Sweaty people have a different body chemistry. We produce extra oils everywhere. I have no dry skin anywhere at 30 yesrs old, so i can afford to strip some oil because my body produces it whether i wash or not :) hope this helps someone! Shampooing literally cured my acne! I (mostly) stopped using shampoo around a year ago, and usualy go a few months at a time only rinsing with water. I have really long hair for a guy, so my hair accumulates a lot of grease if I don't rinse it often enough, and then it gets all tangled which is why I still use it sometimes. The thing is, whenever I tell someone I dont shampoo, they almost always have a pretty strong reaction, sometimes to the point of disgust, but if I don't bring it up, I have never heard anyone mention to me that my hair is greasy, dirty, smelly, etc., which really tipped me off to realizing that at least for me, shampoo was really more of a cultural thing than someting I actually needed (I've had a really similar relationship with deoderant, but people tend to find that even more gross so I usually don't bring it up).

I wash my hair with shampoo maybe once a week, sometimes even less. If I wash it more often it gets more greasy. The less i wash it (with shampoo! I still use water) the less greasy it gets. My Mom has been a Hairdresser for over 4 decades. Commercials have never played a part in my or much of my family’s feelings regarding shampoo. My Mom’s education and work on hundreds of clients, however, is absolutely something to which I take heed; in my own life, by day 4-5, my fine, oily hair is so limp, so uncomfortable, so lacking even the ability to look cute in a ponytail or a bun, and not to mention it’s retained various smells if I’ve been outside, it is a absolutely crucial that I wash my hair. My hair looks best on day 1 and with a dry shampoo, it’s okay on day 2. I have friends with thick, coarse, wavy or curly hair, and my fiancé has hair like that- their hair looks great for up to 5 days, with it looking best on the latter days. I just know that I washed my hair Friday night, and it had been 3 days/72 hours. My hair looked like shit. It felt like shit. I could’nt even sleep comfy because it felt so icky. I love my hair slightly stripped of its natural oils and hot curled after a blow out. It’s the only time and only way my fine, silky, straight hair looks and feels bouncy, shiny, cute, and fluffy. I cannot imagine never shampooing again. I’d rather shave my head bald!

Me personally, have been on no-shampoo streak for atleast 2-3 months now. Nothing touches the hair except cold water now. Never got oily, itchy scalp, greasy, smelly, or dirty hair. No dandruff even in dry season. I've asked people if my hair looks any different and they say it looks normal. I just wash it under shower everyday while bathing.

Now mind you, I am 59 years old and its really devistating to watch your hair coming put in clumps. I changed shampoos several times but nothing seemed to work and the hair loss was getting really bad. So last month I decided to do the big chop and buzzed off all my hair. I rarely use shampoo anymore and my scalp feels so much better as the itching has stopped. Plus the new hair growth looks really good and feels healthy. With that said I will continue on my no sham journey and use only organic things that is good for my skin and hair. One last note... I finally found a great organic olive oil hand crafted soap for my skin that is made in Greece and contains only 3 ingredients. This soap leaves my skin super soft and it isnt itchy anymore!

As a black woman with very curly hair, I have a very different experience with hair washing schedules. All of my hairdressers have always advised me never to wash my hair more than once a week due to the visible fact that my hair genuinely does not produce a lot of oil or grease. My hair is always dry, even after I add leave-in oil-based hair products. Despite being accustomed to only washing my hair once a week I have often questioned the role of shampoo and what its purpose really is. This video really helped me understand some of the history and politics of shampoo. While I am definitely very excited to see how my scalp and hair would feel without shampoo, I do think that conditioner is very helpful and useful for my hair type and I probably will keep using it in my hair care routine.

What I use as a secondary oil if I need it, or want to put some shine back in my hair, I make up a mixture of baby oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and some fragrance oil extract. The baby oil is really to help keep everything mixed together and keep it flowing even when it's cool in the house. Just do a squirt (i put the oils in a repurposed hand soap dispenser), rub hands together, and rub through hair. Gives you a nice sheen, coconut and olive oils are good for your scalp and hair, and the fragrance is like a free body scent that'll last hours if not all day easy. I've used clove oil once and that stayed in my hair for days, even making my pillows smell like cloves. Granted, this works for me, and may not for you. I don't have that kind of hair (white guy here) but maybe something you could try out. The oils are cheap so you wouldn't loose much, and you can cook with the olive/coconut oils of what you don't use ;)

I haven't used commercial shampoo or conditioners in around 7 years. I dont just use water to wash it though, I use a few soap nuts, amla (dried indian gooseberries), and shikakai pods boiled in water, then cooled a bit. It looks like beer and feels odd when you use it because it doesn't lather, because it's not stripping your hair of oils. I rinse with a little apple cider vinegar mixed with warm water, this really softens it. You can soak herbs in the vinegar you will use too! Your scalp needs time to adjust to a normal ph and oil balance if you're switching from shampoo. So you have to stick to using it for a while. I can go two weeks of not feeling like I need to wash it and it's fluffy and clean. Ps. When using this, I put it in a plastic milk jug and poke holes in the lid. Wet your hair, squirt liquid on scalp and massage, do all areas of your head. Rinse and repeat two more times. I think brushing your scalp is important too, for removing dust, loose hair etc and it gets oils down on your hair too.

So, "This guy clearly does" is a bit of an ignorant statement. I wish he addressed it in the video, but for me, and I think for most people that stop shampooing, it's not just about shampoo, it's about all hair products. Look at the cycle he presents: shampoo, condition, add product, feel greasy, repeat. When you stop shampooing, you stop conditioning, adding product, and feeling greasy - it's about breaking the cycle.

Now , you can get products without those two things but shampoo still leaves my hair feeling off and weird . I use products but not daily and My hair doesn’t get greasy quickly but I found that apple cider vinegar mixed with water rinses /cleanses my scalp . Other alternatives to cleaning your scalp / balancing the ph is shikakai (Acacia concinna) or neem powder to rinse prior to the conditioner process . Not every day but like every fourth day depending on how much you sweat etc daily . It’s a lil messy with powder but all in all these things work way better for me than most of the shampoos I have tried so far and I’ve been a product junkie for a minute . I use a lot of oils in my hair mixed with leave in conditioners so when my hair needs a “reset “ , I proceed with one of the three things mentioned . It’s one thing to rid your hair of product build up and to ensure a clean/balanced ph scalp but it’s another thing to strip your hair of all its natural oils for then to overdose it on conditioner to get “moisture” or the protecting barrier back. It’s just ensures this weird cycle that he describes in the video .

Bro this guy forgot to mention that it only applies to short hair 💀 and even short hair gets greasy…..you literally need shampoo. Shampoo is supposed to clean your oily scalp, and it trips it of the oils which is good, but if you apply it anywhere other than your scalp THEN stripping it of it’s oils is bad. That’s why there’s conditioner. And having this kind of hair he has while not using shampoo is pretty much impossible. His hair would be greasy and would look wet if he actually didn’t wash it with shampoo for this long, quite literally. You can’t just wash off your oils in water because oil doesn’t mix with water…..and that’s exactly why shampoo comes in and helps attach the oil to the shampoo.

@@ScizzoringGirlz Suuuuuure buddy, so he's lying about not using shampoo even though people would think he was dirty. It surely seems like a beneficial lie to him right? The only reason you think this is because of all the ads you've been seeing since you were born. Also oil on your hair isn't bad, it's there for a fucking reason, you shouldn't want to take the oil out of your hair but the dirt and bacteria. As long as you keep using shampoo your hair will always feel greasy after a few days of not showering. Now not everybody has the same hair type but I can assure you that most commercial shampoos are not good for your hair. It's in their best interest to make you think that you NEED shampoo, when really most people don't.

@@aimanjaouhara957 LMFAOO you’re really not even a chemist to be saying this. You probably believe In conspiracy theories too 💀 if you wanna walk around unwashed and greasy then go ahead! I’m just saying that it won’t feel good. The science of shampoo is that it removes oil, Water can’t remove oil because it doesn’t mix with it, So that’s why shampoo is made to be able to mix water and oil so it can strip the oils. And no….oils aren’t there for a reason, You have to wash them out. The only oils you shouldn’t be washing off are the oils on your mids & ends, That’s where conditioner goes. This guy showed him applying conditioner to the scalp which will OF COURSE make your hair greasy 💀 it’s not supposed to go on your scalp. Not sure if you know this as well but the more product you apply AFTER showering, The faster your hair will get greasy…..just the way it works, You can’t avoid it. Shampoo would never make your hair greasy because it’s not staying in your hair like conditioner. If your hair gets oily fast then it’s a sign that it lacks moisture….using a good moisturizing shampoo could very much help fix that problem, Or deep hair oiling before washing your hair also works. I know it because it helped me. You said that most commercial shampoo’s are bad but most really aren’t….can you enlighten me on what you think makes a shampoo bad?

I just wash the hair under shower with normal water everyday, not even hot water, just cold water. It doesn't smell bad, it doesn't get greasy, it never felt itchy or got dandruff, not even during winters. And oil can definitely be washed away atleast to some extent with water, as evident from my experience. And you can just apply some oil to your hands for experiment, and try to rinse it off under running water, it WILL wash away most of the oil. And I look at my scalp under good lighting in front of the mirror everyday for reasons, and I don't notice any dirt, or gross looking stuff on my scalp. (Also of you suddenly try this no-shampoo challenge I've heard you will get greasy hair for a couple weeks initially because your body expects you to shampoo it again out of habit and thinks it needs to pour excess oils on your scalp to compensate for your shampooing.

@@ScizzoringGirlz Why do I have to be a chemist to be talking about this? No I don't believe in consipiracy theories. Oil is supposed to be there because your body produces it for a reason, like most things the body produces. Like why do you imagine hair grows on your groin? Why does hair grow in the first place you reckon? Why do we have fingernails? Why does your mouth produce saliva? From where do you get your information about shampoo? Also why do you have to get rid of oil from your hair? Shouldn't you just get rid of whatever is dirty, oil isn't inherently dirty. Have you ever tried not using shampoo for a while? Try it yourself, but if you think people will judge you because of it, that's a problem I can't help you with. From my personal experience right now my hair feels great, it's not too oily, it doesn't smell bad. Give me a reason to why I should go back to using shampoo regularly? If you can give good reasons, I can definetely change my mind, but it has to also explain why not shampooing isn't making my hair greasy and itchy and all that bad stuff.
