What a delightful essay. I came here because my AI music discovery happened on one of your tracks, and it stood out amongst the cacophony.

One of my favourite composers talking about one of my favourite topics, AI. Thank you!

Thanks Neil. The fact that you can deliver that insight … as an innovator with a history of electronic art experimentation in addition to impactful human analogue jazz artistry … points to the inevitable fact that there will always be something new under the sun … always something new … and human … performing new things under the sun. Great insight well made.

I feel like you conflate AI and tech quite a bit. This is not what AI is purely, its a thinking, machine learning, intelligence all of its own, and that in and of itself is scary. We've never created anything like this before and dont really have anything to lead us in the direction of where this is going. ...I would also argue that the listener has become lazy. Years ago they'd rebel. Rebelled against Elvis for the Beatles, rebelled against the hippies for punk, against glam for grunge. It might not have been intentional, but people got bored. Now I feel maybe they're ground down from the intensity of the machine that pushes Dua Lipa and co onto our spotify playlists (note, I am not against Dua Lipa, just the way everything is so micromanaged and sterile now). An AI machine would surely ramp up that intensity. ....And the other issue, one I've personally found, is that people dont get to choose if AI isnt properly labelled. I myself have had to question even spotify and soundcloud artists if their material is AI. Some have said yes, some have blocked me. There will come a time when even people like myself who are well versed in how music tech works will sit back and not be able to hear a difference. That rock is already tumbling.
