The undead curse effects all life once the fire starts to fade. This is why even the ancient dragons can become hollow. This is why in Dark Souls 3 we see more gods who are Hollows. The dark band is merely for linking chosen undead to bonfires in the early fight against the darkness and later to assist in the quest to rekindle the First Flame.

Happy new year, great series, can’t wait for the next one. Also,if you think about it, Gwyn is also the ‘lord of cinder’ because his entire empire has fallen apart. He was the lord of the whole world, now he’s the lord of nothing. Edit: 4:03 was that a fucking dragon ball reference? Edit again: a theory I heard that I think is interesting (though probably wrong) is that the fire is fading because the lord souls were taken out of it, and that DS2 and DS3 take place in 2 different timelines. With DS2 being what happens if you bring back all of the main 3 lord souls, and your massive piece of the dark soul, and DS3 being what happens if you let the fire die out, since the lord souls are never returned to the fire. Personally I don’t buy this theory and think even if it’s true it should be the other way around but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Well, it’s been a fun ride Post Watch Edit: Goddamn, what a series, and what a gaming trilogy I’m currently playing both DS1 and DS3, simply because they are such amazing games The comparison of decay between the two games, it feels like DS1 shows a world only recently beginning to die, whereas DS3 feels like a wounded animal just begging for a mercy kill Personally for endings, I go for Link the Fire in DS1 and Age of Dark in DS3, just because narratively that’s how it plays out, the Chosen Undead fights the change, while the Ashen One doesn’t even bother and welcomes the new world with open arms Also because it feels triumphant and awesome when you link the fire in DS1, but in DS3 the world is just right back where it started, even as the most powerful souls in the world are fed to the flame, the flame burns brighter for a solid two seconds before going back to a flickering mass of embers It’s just sad, not to mention the Firekeeper’s speech is GOATed Overall, I love these games, DS1’s level design is the greatest, DS3’s boss fights are the closest to perfection I’ve ever seen Thank you for the series And to everyone who reads this comment: Don’t you dare go hollow

Forgot to say, the fire always restarts. Fire fading is not the final destination, it's just another possible reality. Prolonging fire is not therefore wrong or incorrect just because the fire can fade as fire will also respark back. Do we let the fire fade in winter just because it's an inevitability without rekindling it? Age of Dark is not the Age of man, it's the age of undead, zombie ghouls and abominations like what we see in Oolacile. No one should take Kaathe's word for anything as his words lead to undead and Darkwraiths feeding on other humans. Humans merely mutated out of the Dark Soul but absolute Dark rule and submission to it is not prohumanity and is violent amd parasitic, hence Manus and all the descriptions for the Dark Spells.
