When you look at older aircraft wing designs, they tended to be in 2 planes with a dihedral and a sweep back but the more modern wing designs using computer modelling and wind tunnel testing are converging on aerodynamic shapes found in nature - bio mimicry like in bird wings. The 777 wing is a prime example - it has eliminated winglets, sharklets,fins and other shapes . The wing is in 3 planes- sideways,backwards and beautifully curving upwards towards the tips- just like a bird !...Thank You Cpt Gabrielle

I think you are refering to the 777-200LR, -200LRF, -300ER. The wings of the 777-200/ER, and -300 were different and less efficient compared to the newer versions.

Also if im not mistaken these vortices are proportional to the wingspan of the aircraft, thats why the 777 787 and 747-8 just used raked wingtips instead of winglets

Hello Gabriele, Regarding the Blended Winglets and Split Scimitar Winglets, there were not used on the 737-800ERX (737-P8 Poseidon and -I8 Neptun), just because of visibility reasons over the wings. They wanted to have an uninterrupted view to the horizon. That is why they had choosen RAKED Wingtips instead.

Explaining winglet should start from gate fee / hangar fee. Because that is priced by category of wingspan. The best type of winglets is lack of them and just longer wings. Only then explain aerodynamics.
