@@albertdittel8898 - This speaker's specialty is different from Perun's. I'm not familiar with him (though many people in this comment section are), but he seems more of a generalist and an advisor, one who aggregates and summarizes from many sources, Perun being one of them that was very useful for him in this particular subject. Perun doesn't know everything! But what he does know, he shares with us his research, analysis, and rarely, his conclusions and predictions. Of course, we should always take information from any source with a proper dose of skepticism - and check up on their sources once in a while as well as search for our own independent sources. I was glad to hear Perun is respected by professionals. I find his work very commendable and mostly credible 😉. I would hope our governments and think-tanks seek out information from a wide variety of sources - even if they're just a KZbin streamer on the internet! If the info is good, it's good! And besides, Perun has LOADS of sources (some official, some open-source) listed in the description under each video.

In the idiotic war of Putin in Ukraine, U.S. are not losing a single piece of the most important capital of any country - the people. Ukrainians are doing all the fighting. And the U.S. wants to leave them and Europe in general getting exhausted, weaken and disillusioned with America over what? Money? Thanks for mentioning this. But they still manage to block some of the Ukrainian cargo ships, or steal the grain. The fact that Ukraine is one the largest exporters of grain and fertilizers to Africa doesn´t get enough attention, and yet is extremely important.
@resputant8173 Жыл бұрын
@@martavdz4972 its extremely important as Ukraine is a major exporter of wheat, maize and barley, and yes its likely large amounts was stolen but as the African nations mentioned they dont care who they buy it from as long as it keeps coming. Russia has not once ounce of compassion and it was more then willing to use other nations populations as a bargaining chip. The problem was resolved more or less with the grain corridor but this year with various lands not being seeded and various areas filled with destroyed Russian equipment and mined it may make it a serious problem this year with what can be harvested. This could push for more nations providing wheat and other cereal grains which is likely to drive up costs locally and could put more pressure for the war to end by an unhappy citizenry hopefully the counter attack will drive the russians back.

Thanks for an informative thoughtful analysis! Now, something that has struck me over the course of this war, is the difficulty with which analysts has tried to understand what the Russian strategy really is, and whether Putin is placing his bets on the shirt, medium, or long term. Now, the way I see it, is that the war itself was a result of diminishing domestic policy space, and that Putins position was under sufficient pressure, so that domestic concerns where driving foreign- and security policy, and not the other way around, which one often assumes. Now, this line of reasoning has some consequences for analysing Russian strategy, because, if domestic policy action space is driving also its foreign and security policy, then it is reason to believe that domestic policy action space will also set limits to the ability to strategic planning of coherent battlefield operations. Hence, I do not believe that Putin is opting for a long war of attrition. Instead, I think Putin is caught in an endless row of dilemmas, where he is forced to choose between short-term solutions of which none are particularly good, and where a coherent strategy can not be found. As a result, the Russian campaign is primarily chaotic, without any coherent overarching strategy, including no real choice regarding a long, a medium term, or a short war. However, I'm pretty sure Putin would really like this war to be over a soon as possible, and the fact that there's no end in sight, primarily tells us that he do not have the means to end it on his own terms, and not the political action space to offer any compromise that may end it on mutually acceptable terms. Which, in turn, tells me that the idea that Putin's regime will not survive this war, appears to be a very plausible one.

I'm an old American left-wing sort, and an amateur student of history. Over my long years observing my world, I've been repeatedly struck by the typical failure of most humans to appreciate the lessons of history and that's why we, as a species, are condemned to repeat it. (Nod to Santayana.) Putin's doing almost exactly the same thing Stalin did...throw men and equipment in as large a numbers as possible, irrespective of horrible losses. It only succeeded in WWII because Germany was militarily engaged on so many fronts it was impossible for them to defend them all, and thus wound up losing them all. (Having a raving lunatic as a leader also didn't help.) Putin does not have this problem. One would think that the Chamberlain example of waving papers in the face of psychopathic would-be conquerors would have taught everyone the lesson of how one deals with bullies. I learned this in school, and the lesson has helped me many times: my family moved frequently, so I was always 'the new kid'. The new kid is inevitable challenged by the class bully, because that's how bullies work. After a couple of failed attempts at accomodaton, I learned that as soon as that chap's fist went up, a quick shot to the nose, mouth or eye from me usually ended the whole affair. Yes, occasionally I went home with a bruised cheek or split lip, and wound up being lectured by some sage adult about 'fighting not settling things' (which was flatly a lie), but it always got whatever dictator-in-the-making off my back. Perhaps we should actually encourage playground fights in the early years, so more people learn how to deal with the inevitable aggression of other humans...and perhaps some of those wanna-be world conquerors will take their black eyes and bloody noses as an object lesson in the futility of war. China...maybe you should consider Sun Tzu's point about the only war you truly win is the one you didn't fight.

Trump set up the Afghanistan fiasco by basically surrendering to the Taliban and releasing thousands of prisoners in advance. What went wrong on Biden's watch was the failure to plan for the chance that the Afghan army would instantly fold. Not exactly a Biden mistake, more like incompetence by people who were already in their jobs before he took over.

Us is basically a non-factor they just throw money at Ukrainian. Europe already provides nuclear deterrent and they are acualy providing most of the equipment that has been given and will be given remember America needs to transport things across the Atlantic causing anything sent to cost more rather then just using trains or literally moving stuff over the land border and there’s no reason they will ever not support Ukrainian as they would rather fight a proxy war then have there own citizens and infrastructure destroyed by war on Europe’s territory and with Russian state media speaking about nuking the capital of Germany and other European country’s. Losing America is a pain yes but it won’t actually stop Ukrainian fighting capabilities or the support in European country’s.

Wonderful insights and perspective. I'm always unnerved by hearing what I've been hearing in other places, but this analysis won me over with its apparent candor about the difficulties Ukraine will face in its upcoming offensive, and the offensive's uncertain prospects. The following points were of particular interest to me: Western vs Soviet air defense density, Ukraine's potential uses for western fighter jets, how wars end, Putin's paths to winning the war and their prospects, sentiment in Russia, and the possible post-war future of Russia. I weigh whether Ukraine would be best off focusing on maneuver or on artillery warfare. Should they try for Kharkhiv-style counteroffensives, Kherson-style ones, or merely on winning the attritional battle through longer-range fires (HIMARS, cruise missiles, etc.). They have been effective in all of the tactics above, and each carries a different balance of short vs long-term risks, and differing prospects dependent on current Ukrainian and Russian capabilities and preparation.

The referendum in 1991 was not about independence from the Russian Federation. That's very misleading. It was phrased in a very particular way ("do you support the declaration of sovereignty that had already been adopted earlier?"). There was no mention of "independence". The key word was *sovereignty*, and a number of republics had passed theirs with the understanding that it was going to lead to greater autonomy for all within a looser confederation of some sort in place of the USSR (the CIS was an abortive second attempt at establishing it). The ballot was also full of flowery language that was hard to say no to, (about power of the people and such), and ended with a giant box for a yea vote and a tiny one for a nay. All that said, if you look at the much more neurally phrased referendum on whether to retain the USSR that had taken place just a few short months before this one, you'll see the results were drastically different (70+% of Ukrainians supported keeping the USSR, if memory serves, and every single region except Lviv and Ternopil in Western Ukraine voted yes to the USSR).
@azamatbagatov7161 Жыл бұрын
I neglected to mention that Russia itself, as the RSFSR, had also passed its own declaration of sovereignty as well by that point.

I would assume the part about the air to missiles from western aircraft is more to do with the active radar guidance. The air to air missiles the ukrainians have for there soviet aircraft are semi active. Meaning the Ukrainian pilot has to maintain a radar lock on the Russian aircraft. Not always easy to do when they're shooting back.
@Wien1938 Жыл бұрын
It's also that the Ukrainian (Soviet) aircraft radars have less range than the upgraded post-Soviet radars, which in turn affects acquisition range.
@SabreSix1980 Жыл бұрын
While that is a factor in favor of the Russians, range is the main issue atm. The Russians have a CAP within their SAM umbrella, equipped with long range R-77 and R-36 missiles, and because they can fly high and fast, that gives their missiles extra range. Currently Ukraine has no way of attacking that CAP, and here MBDA's Meteor looks like a possible solution to that problem. Due to it's ramjet engine it is powered during its entire flight, meaning that even if it needs to climb from tree top level to the altitude of the Russian CAP, it wil lose a lot less kinetic energy and range than the R-27's Ukraine uses now.
@Wien1938 Жыл бұрын
@@SabreSix1980 Good points, but radar acquisition range also matters - if the fighter cannot detect or lock on, the Meteor cannot be launched at the enemy fighter either.
