Man, we'd be cranking out 2-3 rounds by the time those guys put out one. I know they prolly had to make it look good, double checking everything, but they're slow. In my day, we used 3 howitzers, interchanging for different missions. M101 105mm, M114 pig 155mm, then the M198 155mm. Best and fastest was the pig cuz you could slap fire it without the lanyard, it took practice to get good, but very dangerous. Rah

The difference between mortars and artillery. Is that mortars are high angle of fire. Require far less people than artillery batteries, notice only four people on the mortar. One artillery cannon will have no less than eight per artillery gun. There is a whole crew that does nothing but determine what deflection and range for the large artillery gun crews. There is even a crew of people that do nothing but atmospherics for the artillery gun to get on extreme long distances. The shell flies at a flatter trajectory. I worked on the M-30, 4.2" (107mm) diameter mortar that was the predecessor to this M-120, 120mm mortar. I was a an 11C mortar crewman in the US Army for seven years. The max range of the old four-deuce was 4800 meters. Almost three miles. Artillery goes up to and maybe beyond 25 miles. All at a flatter trajectory than mortar shell shoot. You only need one guy to determine the deflection and range to target with mortar. Usually there are two computation specialists to cross check each other for accuracy of data. Big difference between artillery and mortars.

Artillery is much cheaper to use and just as effective as airstrikes in my opinion. I was learning about how Somalia's army coped without air support. It was largely through artillery barrages to eliminate Al Shabaab.

@Jeff Rogers My MOS was suppose to be artillery. But I was PDQ'd from kidney stones. But yeah I agree, you have to be smart to do artillery. My recruiter said I'd have to take some crazy mathematical tests since we would need to hammer enemy positions accurately as to prevent accidental collateral damage. But yeah that's how many strong empires won wars, was artillery. The Persians rained thousands of arrows on Greek resistance. The Aztecs bombarded enemy empires with atlatl darts, arrows, and slings. The Romans with their ballistas, the Anglo's with their catapults etc.

Artillery also is pretty much all weather and does not have a limited “loiter time” like aircraft do. Plus you have a much wider choice of warheads at your almost immediate disposal. Each has their pluses and minuses but both are almost a necessity in combat.

Everytime I saw a mortar being fired, it went "boomfff." A soft, muffled boomfff. When I was in army officers training we fired the 81 mm mortar. No it didn't go "booom, fff" it went BANG! that's why you drop the round and keep moving down so your head and body is below the tube mouth to go below the concussion as if fires.

@@ms.annthrope415 My comment was very much tongue in cheek! I have in fact fired old British pattern 3" mortars during a stint as a reservist in the Australian Army in the 60s. They didn't have anything like the power of the 81, but they still made quite a bang. In fact, we had to wear old WW2 vintage helmets (the wide flattish brimmed ones) and we were required to fix the chin straps behind our necks, as we were warned of the possibility of broken necks from the muzzle blast if we ducked too late!

A lot more safety precautions now then when we did this in 67. Probably a good thing. Fuses on 55 rounds look different. Rammer is curved, ours were straight. Verifying the info before firing another good idea. We never took the time to swab our the bore after each round which was another dangerous maneuver.

That's called a bore sight that is used to align the cannon with the aiming optic that you see on the left side of the gun tube. When properly aligned the gunner position aims the optic at a set of poles, called aiming stakes, as a reference point. That reference point is always 2800 NATO Mil-radians. Standard Mil-radians are 3283 in a circle. A circle of NATO Mil-radians is 6400 Mil-radians. The computation specialists change direction of the forward observer into the direction of the target. Both directions originate from the position of the guns. Then a map is used to get range to target. Using a charge manual to get the angles needed in the gun tube and number of charges to get on target at the desired range. The guns are always aimed in the likely direction of possible targets. The actual Mil-radian direction is changed to 2800 Mils as a reference point to work with to get the gun cannon aimed at a target you cannot see. My MOS job in the US Army was 11C for seven years. I worked on the predecessor mortar to this 120mm mortar. The M-30, 4.2" (four-deuce) mortar. Metric size was 107mm. The old four-deuce was a rifled cannon with rifled shells. This 120mm mortar is a smooth bore cannon. With fin stabilized shells. Had 42 charges based in 1/8ths increments. These block style charges used today are easy.

This is known as indirect gun laying. Basically the sight they look down is aiming at a reference point. Of coursem this reference point has to be calibrated before hand. This is kind of known as "zeroing" a gun. By aiming at this reference point, they know exactly where the gun is pointing. Using this reference point, they can traverse the gun left or right to point at the target. See nigelef.tripod.com/fc_ap_method.jpg for a pictorial representation. This of course is a simplified explanation. You can google indirect gun laying for more details.

Every time I see this in real life or in vids like this, cant help to think about past wars were these guys had to keep moving that gun more vertical because the enemy was getting closer.. 12-B

@@tonyberuff8981 An acquaintance in Yuma told me the 5th FFA at Pleiku RVN had 175mm howitzers. He told if they had troops in the wire they would depress and load only the powder, no shot. The blast alone would kill at 100m.

Not to mention rolling the gun back to position after firing that’s coming from my Reenactment experience with firing a 3 in Civil War era gun and the enemy virtually in front and on top of you

all that to load it, so yeah you don't want to miss the target, then you have to move at times to not get pinpointed, by the enemy.

Are the 120 mortars part of the artillery or infantry family? As in 03s or 08s? Semper Fi!

Mortars use steeper angles to fire on targets..mortar crews are part of infantry units, while artillery batteries usually get whole areas in which they support

We had nine guys on the 198 (though I was in the army, so maybe the Marines do it different). That sucker was a beast and we had to prime each round individually. It took a lot of work to get a crew to operate quickly but we could send it as fast as you needed it for a little while before we were smoked. This was before the M777 was in the inventory. These look a lot more efficient.

After my initial Call-for-Fire, the Fire-for-Effect would be so Off. I often wondered was this normal, or my expectation were not realistic. Anybody from Artillery would like to chime-in??

A lot of factors. Is this on a range or with an experienced combat unit? Can't imagine a seasoned battery having those issues. Are the lots #s of rounds and powder registered ? Range probable error, hi angle fire (howitzer). Meteorological data. Fired many contact fire missions w/o complaint from our grunts. Redleg RVN 70-71
