Very cool! I practiced Aikido for over a decade in the US and now live in Aomori, Japan. One of these days I'll have to make a trip down to Sendai :)

@@iatsd unfortunately that's over 2 hours from me since I'm over in the Goshogawara area. I've heard there's a small group in Hirosaki which would be my best bet for regular practice, but I haven't checked them out yet

Superb interview. Excellent background story that I'm sure most of us didn't know. Thank you so much for creating and posting this. We are very grateful to you and especially to your excellent video KZbin production team! Because of them, all of us are able to see, enjoy, learn from, and be inspired by your Aikido, passed down to you by your father and from Kobayashi Yasuno Sensei. :-) Domo Arigato.

Interesting. I am a Chinese martial arts, mainly taijiquan practitioner, who started practicing aikido too, 11 years ago. It took me some time to find what is common between taijiquan and aikido but I am finding more and more in common every day. I am very fond of Shirakawa sensei, his aikido is a real inspiration for me and I hope one I will have a chance to learn from him. My question is: what taijiquan lineage is Shirakawa sensei practicing?

It's good to hear that you are an opened mind person, speaking English, going to Canada, and Europe, I believe this is critical. Judo kendo and katori shinto ryu are excellent, ... Aikido is a budo, but will you go as far as to say that it's still relevant in the realm of self protection ? Self defense ? If yes to what extent ? What about the "new ideas" that bring on the table more "knowledge" more understanding of human psychology, human body mechanics, human fight, human longevity. Because we need some flexibility in our mind as you said, I personally had to expand my understanding of human psychology and combat by exploring especially the Brazilian jiu-jitsu which has a lot to offer in this modern world. I feel now more comfortable in my mind, because I have a holistic understanding of human combat, which makes me better understanding the relevance of human body preservation, love, and collaboration. Aikido expert do not talk that much with other experts. We need to see that for the aikkdo community and the martial arts world in general.

One of his dojos was located in Sendai/Minami. Wasn't this the area most affected by the Fukushima disaster?
