my marine hand to hand combat instructor could not stress enough the importance of aikido in a hostile situation primarily because it is sooo adaptable to any other art and any other weapon, i honestly think its one of the most beautiful arts, mostly because i've seen the more peaceful side of it but then i've also seen the more aggressive and killing intent side of it too, this art can go both ways, i have nothing but respect for O' Sensei, that man was truly years ahead of his time

*The Way of the Warrior has been misunderstood. It is not a means to kill and destroy others. Those who seek to compete and better one another are making a terrible mistake. The real Way of a Warrior is to prevent such slaughter - it is the Art of Peace, the power of love.* ―Morihei Ueshiba

"The Way of the Warrior has been misunderstood." Well it certainly seems to have been misunderstood by Morihei Ueshiba! The purpose of the martial arts is simple - to survive battle and to destroy ones enemy. All this pseudo-spiritual waffle only came about at the end of the Meiji period when the Samurai realised that while their fighting skills had been rendered obsolete on the battlefield by firearms, their training had beneficial effects on a person distinct from turning them into killers. They fostered those aspects of training that turned out "better" human beings as defined by the still militaristic society of the time and people like Kano worked tirelessly to shoehorn it into the education system. In the 21st century, we still have warriors in the military, in the combat sports cage and on doors but few of them have time for spiritual nonsense or ineffective technique.

Thank you for this wonderful old film. I began Aikido in 1957 as a UK student of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei, I am proud to have two of my diploma's signed by Osensei Ueshiba and my Shihan signed by his grandson Moriteru Ueshiba. Henry Ellis - Co-author of ` British Aikido History `.

Looking at O’Sensei doing his dance, reminds me of how I learned 31 Jo Kata in my bedroom with just my hands. Been working on Aikido for 10 years. But never really learned the 31 Jo Kata. Was getting ready to get back in class Jan 2021. Then Covid Hit. And I was stuck at home. So just started working the pattern. Wasn’t easy to learn on my own. But finally was able to finish at 31 in the same spot I started. But it was a very weird feeling just doing it with empty hands. Then take it outside with a Jo. And wow. Just so intriguing and beautiful.

These Aikido boys will twist you in directions you never thought your body will go. You feel like your joints will explode and your bones will torque into a spiral fracture. The reason their attacking workout partners look like they leap into a roll, making it easy for the master, is because if they don't leap or roll with the technique something will snap, break, or tear if you don't. Aikido is the real thing. It's simplicity is its beauty. No need to hit somebody when you've destroyed their arm joints.

Aikido is so misunderstood. It's a non violent way of convincing the attacker that maybe he made a mistake. It's so effective once it's learned that you can't spar. Too dangerous.

people who hate on aikido need to chill out. No one is arguing with you. I used to be a punk that started fights because i knew karate. I started aikido when i was 9. At the time i thought that it was pointless and that i could never use it in the streets. Now im 15 and i can honestly say that i have never started a fight since i started aikido and that i dont care how big u r. Aikido isn't a sport, it teaches you respect and survival and way more than i can fit in this comment.

Aikido saved my ass back in the day when an asshole tried to kill with a knife. Wheny couzin taught a few basics of aikido, he told me this: no matter what kind of martial arts you would have the most important technics the a master will ever teach you is to run. Run as fast as you can. But if you have no choice but o defend yourself then you should better have the presence of mind, strength, good reflex, effective technics, speed and also the guts. And also he told me that every martial artist always study their opponent's movements before making a move...

The reason Aikido isn't used by the military alot is because it promotes peace, harmony & love. Aikido was founded by O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba who studied Aiki-jujitsu, so you can already guess some principles are similar to that of what you'll learn in MMA (BJJ). I also know of Aikidoka who help train MMA champions :)

Respect and harmony help one on the way. Always wanting to dominate others may indicate that fear lives in your center, instead of a transcendent gratitude. Peace and joy are the goals of true warriors. War is not a solution, so if you want peace, you must prepare for war. "Si vis pacem, para bellum. This is one thing that I cannot tell about any boxer or any other aggressive combat practitioners, or at least I'm not fond of. And believe me, he is not the only aikido sensei that lived like that. From the way you talk, I believe you should practice aikido, not for fighting ( at least not at first ), but for enlightenment, joy and harmony.

It is a martial art, it was based on a defensive arts of the samurai whenever they are disarmed and facing better armed(e.g. swords) or greater number of foes. It is basically a defensive one, but extremely effective in adept hands. The tumbling part is also defensive in a way that if executed correctly, it minimizes damage taken when a throw by the opponent is inevitable, thus still be able to 'fight' on in better condition.

@CloudsBeyond As you said, they're "demos". If you want to see how Aikido is applied in combat situations, look for Steven Seagal training Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida in their fights for UFC Middle Weight Championship and Light Heavy Weight Championship bouts this year. Seagal teaches both fighters the concept of "irimi" with the follow up "atemi". Aikido demos are not fights; they demostrate the Aiki principle using martial forms; the principle of Harmonisation, and peaceful resolution.

What I meant was, GIs (young recruits being trained for deployment) cannot AFFORD the time necessary to truly master aikido. They, much like the MMA or competitive 'pro fighters', need whatever raises their ability in hand-to-hand combat the quickest, that delivers the most 'bang-for-the buck' in the shortest time possible. Whereas aikido, like other such disciplines, is more of a 'lifestyle' thing, and often a lifeTIME as well. Regardless of that, thank you for your service to your country.

O Sensei Murehi Ueshiba! Such passionate man! Man who love unity and refuse to carry the burden that comes with harming a man a living thing with feelings. I today was at the dojo in which every other practioner trains. I asked a Tae Kwon Do guy how to block kicks. He showed me but also told me that Aikido is useless. Aikido is not useless tool. It is viewed incorrectly. It is merely a blue print and Ideal how a diskussion should be held or a conversation to had. Nobody is getting seriously hurt for the consequences of their irrational decisions. There only such a pain that shows you that you assumed wrong but that this is nothing wrong. But instead it shows you to think about yourself and maybe question your morals. It shows you that it is okay to make mistakes. It shows you that forgiveness can be learned through hard dedication and belief. Aikido fully mastered can take out a fully skilled MMA fighter, if the MMA fighter is filled with bad intentions to willingly inflict pain on him so have unrightly gain happiness from him. If there is a valid reasons that requires physicallity.

I know these guys are true masters and what not but it'd be interesting to see how skilled battle hardened vets were back in feudal Japan

Aikido is the perfect martial art. Perfect Budo. Not Street fighting. That we leave to others

Good point, animals are sentient and so should therefore not be killed for eating I think.

To anybody: Why would any martial art be widespread if not somebody had proven that it worked to people who did some kind of different style? Therefore, if you are really good in any style, it will work. If not, and you use it in a fight, you get beaten up. There might be styles that are more effective in early stages of learning than aikido. It just requires a LOT of practice. But how would anybody know if something worked if he did not try to use it or felt it used on him?

@Kenshin1080 Black belt is the beggining of the aikido. It means nothing. Between first and second Dan, there's a world.

@norwegian733 :0) it's you who are blind..the fan movements were from sword techniques, and the staff work speaks for itself. It's clear you have never been near real weapons work...try it out for a year or so.... then watch this video again.

Wow you watched the whole thing? I wasn't convinced either but Nicholas Pettas was a real sport fighter and his other episodes on karate and kendo seemed to be on point. He doesn't seem to be the type of guy to pretend to be pushed down for the show's sake. So even though I wasn't totally convinced, the video makes me feel there is something there in that martial art.

Aikido is a good group exercise, effective in a fight with people that have no fight experience but ineffective with real fighters. But have fun and learn some discipline is never wrong.

Aikido, dependiendo de las circunstancias, parece danza, cuando se la práctica en dojo, o letal si es en combate real.
