That's great. I was taught something similar when I was a kid. I got accosted, did it and it worked. Your variation is a little better. Thx for the tip!

We were training this just the other night, really good exercise in not creating resistance, making the entry and turn whilst leading the balance is really hard to get spot on. thanks for showing it again

I thought people from the west often mocked at the practicality of Aikido? Why this and that here huh. Just put on your Stetson hat, wear your Luger and go your way. That’s the best self-defense.

It's not that all of aikido is bad, it's just that a lot of it is bad against resisting opponents. Wrist locks and arm locks are legit, but a lot of the moments in aikido are reliant on a partner that knows how to move correctly. I train jiu jitsu with an aikido black belt and he had literally said to me "98% of what I learned is useless against anyone in here with more than a few months of experience." I think any martial art can be useful for self defense if you actually practice it against fully resisting opponents. There's a dude on KZbin with the channel 'my martial arts journey' that came from an aikido background and tried to transfer it to MMA. Super interesting channel if that's up your alley. Edited to add, this technique seems legit if someone is grabbing you like this. Very similar to swimming in an underhook for a throw or single leg. If someone grabs you like this and you don't care about hurting them, you can also hit a fast armbar here.

This is part of sensei's "Aikijutsu" syllabus which he teaches alongside the traditional iwama syllabus - it gives us the benefits of both the old school kata plus more functional focuses self defence applications. And its great fun!

Dont use akido or judo as your primary martial art, subliment it to help your other more cruciall martial arts like kick boxing, wreslting, bjj etc

I've used variant of this many times in my job (Corrections officer). perhaps you just lack the skill or experience level? perhaps you just saw the word 'Aikido" and you silly prejudice made you post without realizing this is a jiujutsu technique? I hope post this anonymously like a coward made you feel less bad about you own failings, just for a second.
