Back in the mid 80s I had the chance...and pleasure...of studying in his Dojo. And even had a couple of chances to work with him personally. I have to smile at remembering him asking me to hit him will all I had. I was flying around the room, from one wall to the other. He was very real and that is how I think of him today.

Unless one trains with someone like Segal one will never know the lessons. I get pissy when a youtuber goes on and on talking instead showing the technique. My pissyness stems from my training as a speaker and presenter. I was taught to get into the content as quickly as possible so as to not lose the audience. After you present the content then you present the fluff talk. But, in the end I respect all arts. People work hard at their art. Most arts/schools do not just give rank, one must earn it.

At the Santa Barbara seminar I brought my 4 yr old son back to meet him. His assistant turned me away and said mr Seagall is resting. He saw us and waved us back and my son demonstrated that he knew all the names of the techniques and Sensei got a huge smile on his face and complimented how smart he was. It was really nice of him.

One reason why Shihan Seagal's Aikido works, is because, it is not pure Aikido. I have seen him use the Straight Blast (Chain Punching) from Wing Chun Kung Fu. Watch "Under Seige 2: Dark Territory", and "Marked for Death".

Aikido always had a combat striking/grappling combatives continum: It was called Aiki Jitsu. Moreshiba's Aikido and Kano's Judo were offspring arts from the parent art of Aiki Jitsu. I was also inspired by Segal's technical grappling methods in the early 90s. To me, Bruce Lee's striking and kicking was the inspiration for the combat sport of PKA style American and 🌎 Worldwide kickboxing in the 70s and 80s, and Steven Segal's grappling techniques displayed in films 🎥 may have contributed to the striking/grappling combat sport of mma during the 90s.

This channel and the Hein's Approach to Aikido channel are wonderful examples of how not to get stuck in the traditionalist and unthinking way of 'learning' Aikido without understanding how to make use of it. Hein's approach of working at reverse engineering through stress testing things to come to the comclusion that Aikido is not an empty hand system at all but a blade art gives us one line. This channel gives us another line from stress testing and adapting and stripping down the traditional techniques to find the underlying mechanics that can be used empty hand in modern day (British) city life gives us the other. And they are clearly enjoying what they do. It's worth comparing these two practical lines with other material out there on KZbin such as Rokas and his Martial Arts Journey. There's a lot to learn from all these things about how humans think and how humans can get themselves muddled by tradition and lose the focus on practicality. And yeah, even though uncle Steven is not a shining example of humanity he did make some impactful and inspiring movies back in the day.

The problem with things like wristlocks is that they're hard to execute when an attacker is throwing with aggression and he pulls his arm back after throwing. What is often needed when doing wristlocks or arm bars is a softening blow to briefly distract them or stun them while you lock in the move, like a quick slap or punch. In chess it would be called an intermezzo move.

Glad to see this homage to "Uncle Steven", and I fully agree with it. My only gripe about his films is that he gives the mistaken impression that what he practices in his movies is the "traditional" form of Aikido. This impression is only enhanced by the first few minutes of his first movie where he includes archival footage of the founder himself (Uyeshiba S.) practicing in his dojo. First thing I realized when I saw the first action scenes in the movie was that Seagal was NOT practicing that "gentle" "cooperative" style of Aikido, but something more akin to the old, harder martial art of Aiki-JiuJitsu .. (or today we might call it "Aikidoflow" .. 😉) As a side note, I would suggest that practitioners of other martial arts who poo poo Aikido for real fight situations take a look at the Aikidoflow videos, and see if that new style might change their minds as to its effectiveness.

Say what you will about SS but the fact that Japanese masters (and their opinion is the only one that counts) allowed him (the only westerner at the time) to run a dojo teaching of all things Aikido in their own backyard and trained with him is a true testament to his highly legit skill level and unmatched dedication to this art. If he was good enough to earn their respect he's legit enough to earn mine, period!!!🙂

Shiho nage, ude garame nage and kote gaeshi have pretty much always worked for me. Ikkajo and nikkajo also have worked in some situations. Irimi nage is also pretty reliable. Only ever had a kokyu nage work maybe once or twice. I'm talking about practical applications, worked law enforcement for nearly 35 years. I think the most dangerous ones to apply would be shiho nage and ude garame nage. You can really mess up someone with those throws, particularly if it's a hard surface. In Yoshinkan we have a technique called irimi tsuki, basically a palm heel to the chin and drive through. It works, but it's dangerous to use because the person on the receiving end basically has the back of their head slammed into the ground. That can have pretty bad consequences.

I trained at a martial arts association where one of the head instructors had been a tunnel rat in Vietnam. He was barely five foot tall, but he did 1000 over head cuts with a weighted boken everyday before class. When he grabbed you, you were grabbed, when he hit you you went down, he was the most realistic practitioner of the art I have ever met. He taught me to strangle a person with their t-shirt. I would have stayed in the class if he had not been re- deployed.

Was watching a video earlier tonight in which the KZbinr was comparing traditional Aikido to "real world" Aikido, such as Aikidoflow. He made the analogy of the differences between the two styles as of chess to football. If that's the case, then Seagal is the quarterback of Aikido. 😀

Say what you like about Seagal but attaining 7th Dan just punctuates at least 7 times where he's contributed to the progression of the art itself. Side Note: Resisting Shihonage caused me to suffer a postirior shoulder dislocation. Aikido, applied with speed and intensity, can have devestating results.

Greetings from Poland. Well, it's 7.48 sec. Is it really possible to grab an opponent's arm or hand ? Perhaps it is but I've never seen it in real life. I guess this might be the most difficul thing to do. I know that people training aikido practise that on & on but how to grab the fast fist and stop it to do a technique ? Usually , in such cases, the opponent pulls his hand back immediately or tries to punch with aother hand. Just, such a thought, ... but I might be wrong. Regards.

I disagree. Movie kotegaeshi like in John Wick is very open with lots of space to make it look dramatic which is good on film. Effective kotegaeshi requires keeping your hands closer to your centre and moving you hips to generate the power. With a very cooperative uke you can do the big dramatic stuff for show, but you'll find yourself in trouble if you do it that way with a genuine attacker.

All his movies up until under seige 2 were really great. And nowadays they are aweful and he has gained alot of weight. But yes he did make aikido more popular and turned me onto it too! I like them both (im doing Judo now) many similarities. And some things about Aikido that i think do think are lacking. And yes, some of the demonstrations cause the audience to say "thats rediculous, nobody grabs you like that" but those are demonstrations! And man, the whole ufc and mma thing has just exploded since its introduction and is the chocolate chip everyone wants. Which cause all these comparisons like Aikido vs Boxing, This vs that, Batman vs Superman, and its not about that.

What he teach is combat aikido, which make you see the art for what it really is That's the reason why i love AIKI- JUJITSU THE SHIT IS VICIOUS. When you reach the black belt level in AIKI JUJITSU, you are on the level of a Ninja. Aikido has its roots in AIKI JUJITSU and TAI CHI, ( don't believe me, check it out ) !!!
