In the litteral text of the song, it is about asking someone to become an open and dedicated satanist. In the broader sense I see it as a call to commitment: the song is saying that if you really stand for something you should be able to support it openly and directly. It's asking people to stop being hangers-on (Hiding from the light, Sacrificing nothing) and moochers (Still you call on me for entrance to the shrine, You call on me for powers clandestine) and to really commit to the cause that's important to them and to give of themselves (That you're ready to stand right here, right now).

Kiss The Go-Goat, Dance Macabre, and Square Hammer were the encore songs when I saw them live. I think confetti was shot over the crowd during Dance Macabre and the whole amphitheater was dancing and moving. Very very fun show and I can't wait for them to do another show in my area.

Every album has its own feel to it (which I'm assuming is why they go through different "Papas" through their career. The first song I heard by them was Dance Macabre when it appeared in a randomized spotify playlist and I loved it. Though didn't get into Ghost until a few years later when I met someone who is OBSESSED with them. Then I listened to the whole discography, and became a fan myself. I love how you get so into the music that you start dancing. Also appreciate that you wait to give your thoughts instead of pausing every few seconds (aside from the obligatory copyright pause).

Exactly. It is used in all kinds of common English dialects. To "square up" means to divide everything evenly in a deal. It also means to fist fight in a proper way, is not a street fight, but fisticuffs. A square is a tool also used by masons, architects, engineers, graphic artist etc, to make sure everything is... well, square. Hard to believe this needs to be explained... it's as common as using words like "blind" to not literally mean blind.

You are correct in fact Tobias Forge is a Mason he claims not active he belongs to a lodge in Sweden in fact there is some controversy over a court case there Research if you wish, I belong to the fraternity myself and although there are Masonic references in the video and the song there is allot that doesn't fit, MASONS DON'T PRACTICE SATANISM. Square hammer is not referenced in Masonry. On the Square and on the level "may we meet on the level and part on the square."

When Papa goes out on stage and people see him, they know *HES THAT GUY* and pay attention to him so much. The way he captures any audience so easily is almost terrifying!! Nice video, as always! One of the ideas behind Square Hammer was that Tobias wanted an "opener", or a "Stadium opener". Seeing Ghost playing at an stadium opening with this song was absolutely awesome. So much power, and the audience went from 0 to 100 in one second! You should also check out Kiss the go-goat. The intro to this song is my ringtone :-) And the chorus is such a MASSIVE hook - my fave Ghost song. "Ritual" and "Year Zero" will give you a good sense of earlier Ghost. But if you want a great deeper cut, I'd say go for "Respite on the Spitalfields."

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that the chorus is a wink and a nod to Masonic Lodges at which you would apparently have these sentences said to you ("are you on the square, are you on the level"). The devil sentence is added for spice and plays with the Satanic theme of the band, and I think it's a brilliant choice for lyrics!

The lyrics are about Free Masons rituals the square and the level are carpenter tools. A square hammer is used in the ritual of rebirth. A person climbs into a coffin, it's nailed down with a square hammer. Then the lid is opened and there's rebirth when the person steps out.

I am, in fact, on the square and level. Ghost is gospel for those inclined. This may be a nod to the Freemasons. The square and level are building tools, and a metaphor/idiom for being honest. The mention of the shrine could be the Shriners, and Baphomet has a place in their lore.

I love that you noticed he checked his hair after the bats flew by. This was the second song I heard after hearing "Rats" on the radio earlier that day. Needless to say I spent the rest of the day into evening traveling down the Ghost hole, and "It's a long waaaaaay down". That's a line from the third song I listened to: "From the Pinnacle to the Pit" If you like bass drivin rock songs, that one is awesome. If Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and yes the master of macabre stories, Edgar Allen Poe(you mentioned) were still alive I'm sure they'd have Ghost on their song list. That's how he met his future right hand men. The Prohibition in America(law against any and all alcohol) started 1920 for 13 crime and death filled years. Lead mostly by Al Capone. One of my favorite live performances of "Square Hammer" is the San Bernardino video from 7/1/17. Ben Christo was the lead guitarist on this tour (had only a brief stint with the band) and is so awesome with regard to his energy, showmanship and interactions with the crowd. The energy of the band overall is outstanding in this live version.

The reason for the different sound in voice is that's papa emeritus the 3rd. The papa you saw on marry on a cross was papa the 4th. But it is still the same singer (Tobias) under all the papa mask
