This is the favorite gmrs ht of my collection, not perfect but checks all the boxes for things I consider important and feels good in the hand. Thanks for all your valuable insight and opinion.

Great review as always. The GMRS radio I like is the Wouxun 805G. A little known fact: it is programmable with Chirp Next using the Wouxun KG-UVD1P settings (can use a Mac). It has an absolutely awesome superhet receiver. You can do ham frequencies as well (including TX). Its downsides are: it doesn't really have a front panel - just a few buttons like on a business radio; it can't scan for tones; it's a UHF monobander. Other than that, a very simple, very capable radio. You can hand it out to lids. Puts out a bit over 5 W. Currently goes for $80 from BTWR. I have two of them.

It's too bad about the Retevis review issue. I've found their radios to generally be much better than many other Chinese brands. Didn't know Aliunce was a related company.

Great review. Yhis helped me pull the trigger on a pair of them. I'd love to see an update video with the ham band tx modification you showed.

They do have pretty good range if terrain allows. Unsure of terrain here, but I live about a mile west of the Havana FL town center, and can hit the Greensboro GMRS repeater while sitting inside my home, approx distance almost 19 miles. Only change to the radio was swapping the antenna for a Nagoya 701G. 73 WSAS211//K4EFW

I have this radio and love it for one thing. The squelch tail is horrible! Not all transmitting radios trigger the squelch tail, bit for the ones that do, this radio has a terribly loud one! Other than that, I love it.

+1 on the Scan issue. I cannot get it to stop. Even on a restart, it will remain on the designated start channel. Once I use the channel knob, it immediately starts scanning again. I cannot seem to get it to stop.

I was really interested in this radio until I saw the black text on the dark blue background. Absolute deal breaker.

There is a firmware update readily available on their website that changes the black text to white- 100% improvement!

I purchased one several months ago. It's a decent enough radio, however * its NOT completely FPP. You need a cable & PC to open all the "custom" channels. And * it's restricted to the GMRS simplex & duplex channels. Except by hacking into the software, you can't "unlock" it for MARS/CAP... There is a YT channel who did. * Mine had a hex set screw on the base of the antenna under a rubber band. One would think that these CCR manufacturers would know by now what the consumers want...
@KS6DAY3 ай бұрын
I tried to convey that in the video. For simple operations (22 simplex channels and a couple repeaters) the FPP gets the job done. But to fully exploit the radio the CPS is a must. On the MARS/CAP issue I demonstrated in the video that my radio has been expanded to operate on HAM frequencies in addition to GMRS. It will do MURS as well. A special program needs to be used. But it's an easy mod. Regarding the antenna, they seem to no longer use glue or a set screw. The antenna comes right off.

I'm one of those rare people who don't really have a need for a computer and I don't apologize for it. But now I'm more careful with what radios I buy. Enjoyed your video.

Nobody beats Wouxon for GMRS radios.
@KS6DAY3 ай бұрын
I certainly didn't say or imply that. But it's a decent lower cost alternative for those unwilling or unable to shell out $150 for a KG-935G.

@@KS6DAY in the end these sheep radios just aren't worth it. It's way better to spend a little more on quality than to waste money on junk.
@vitogriffin89023 ай бұрын
@@theoriginaldashriprock are you aware that a lot of people thought wouxon was cheap junk for a long time, and plenty still do? This radio isn't cheap junk; it's a mid level casual use radio that will do just fine for the tasks that almost everyone would require out of a GMRS radio. Not every piece of equipment in a person's inventory needs to be the absolute best in its class.
