Lovely. Thanks Aimee. Bill Evans is simply "the man" for me saw him live in London 3 nights running months before he died , and he played a completely different set each night apart from one tune "suicide is painless"

Aimee Nolte . You can't imagine, I was 26 gigging with pop bands but having lessons with any jazz pianist i admired in London whenever I scrabbled some cash together. Then.... A pivotal moment. Never really recovered. 😌

How refreshing to find this. It is a rare skill, to speak of music without trampling all over the feelings wrapped up in the notes, to delicately touch the heart of the matter with such grace.

Just want to say I love discovering your breakdown of Bill Evans. He has become my all-time favorite pianist of any genre because he seems to have crossed all boundaries. He also seemed to be very selfless in his playing when in his trios, even in driving the melody. All I can say, Aimee, is "thank you". What makes Bill Evans such a great artist is his endless and original creativity, as you illustrate. I think we see that when we listen to him playing songs (eg 'My Foolish Heart'): he never plays the same part of the verse/chorus the same way twice.

Having listen to Bill Evans music, I like it very much. Your analysis of his composition makes it intelligible and more appreciation to his style. I played some passages of his tunes by reading the transcriptions, but could not remember them. Now your explanation makes the transcriptions clearer without adding the implied notes from Bill Evens. I would play them again and this time knowing the hidden notes, the intentional voicing, it would be easier to play and internalize. Your lovely voice and style definitely helped. Aimée, Many thanks.

Thank you for your gift " Blue In Green ". This afternoon I am on my piano. I have the chance to play on a Steinway and Sons. It is perfect for Bill Evans...It's new for me but to sing as you on the melody, that help me for the sensibility. Now "Killing me softly" and "Have you Met Miss Jones" are in my hands. I know a lot of channels but yours is really original and creative. " Un enchantement ".

quinto34 my favorite period too. partly because of the great engineering of bill schwartau and ray fowler. i love rudy van gelder but his addition of putting that chamois cloth into the piano hole and adding reverb changed his sound and made it more brittle and hard.

Nice tutorial. :-) The F7 chord in bar 8 in the II V I progression is really just the b9 11 13 based on F7, but it is also a Bb augmented triad in root position (there are other names for it too i.e. 2nd inversion of the D augmented triad, Gm #7 omitting the root, etc.. Bill Evans was one of the greats of Jazz piano and is my favourite jazz pianist. A real shame that he died so young, but what a legacy to leave for aspiring jazz pianists. Gone, but never forgotten. There's a great black and white vid. of him on You Tube with his brother, where he explains that it's better to write something simpler that you really understand, rather than sometimes attempting more complex solos, which meander into aimless ramblings. Of course, the free jazz / avant garde vanguard e.g. Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, etc. ironically were doing exactly that, by breaking new ground and shattering convention with the freedom of unconventional harmonies/structure, dissonance, atonality, chaotic solos, etc.. I actually like the free jazz guys and I saw Cecil play at Ronnie Scotts approx. 20 years ago. The audience talked loudly throughout his entire set, without any appreciation for his work whatsoever. It was upsetting to see such a great Jazz pianist treated like that by those philistines. Around the same time in 1997, I actually phoned up Ornette Coleman and spoke to him about licensing some of his free jazz material from the late 60s/early 70s. He was a nice guy and was open to the idea, but did not like the 'free jazz' label ascribed to his music. To him it was just 'Jazz'. Very sad to hear that he passed in 2015, but if there is a heaven, then think of the band permutations e.g. Jimmy Hendrix , Bill Evans (p), John Coltrane/Ornette Coleman (s), Jaco on bass, Beethoven on organ, Mozart on Fender Rhodes, Art Blakey on drums, Sabu on percussion and of course Miles. Now there's a concert worth the entrance fee :-)
