Im a guitarist and ALWAYS sing my lines. It has unlocked my improvising capabilities and taken them to the next level. We are playing this song in combo this semester. Great video. Youve inspired me 🤟

Every bop player is required to complete a minimal 4-hour Miss Jones marathon annually. It's in the by-laws. Piano players especially should check out the Ray Brown/Gene Harris version, probably the rockinest version on YT.

Thanks Aimee, I will spend some time working on this. It is a song I have played live by just plodding through the chord chart and not really understanding what was happening. You have shed new light on the piece and your point and sing has me hooked.

Aloha, my name is Keao Costa, a musician from Honolulu. I have been following your KZbin for a couple of weeks now. And... I am in heaven, in HEAVEN.. Your tutorials can be used as great tools if viewers know how to apply them to their own craftiness. For me, I am just a simple Simon, who is self taught, really, using the advice I pick up here and there in Hawaiis music scene and now KZbin. I've been playing the upright bass for years and I sing what we call, Hawaiian Falsetto.. Finding myself with too much free time lately and kinda feel unmotivated. So I. thought that maybe taking up another instrument would be a fun way to challenge myself and be more versatile. So piano it is and I am stoked! And oh, your walking bass lines posts are awesome too btw.. helps with my playing. But I have just one concern. If I have to play bass at my gig it's gotta come with me.. And it's a task! How do you carry that big a** piano to work? or do they already have one at your gigs? Smh jk. Thank you, for your many videos they're fun, rather entertaining entertaining from a music geeks POV and they show your personality and love for music .. They played an instrumental part in bringing me to my decision! Well done! And.. Mahalo. Keao Costa...

This reminds me of a story I once read where a poor kid plays basketball his whole childhood using a bucket that is smaller than a standard hoop because that's all he has. So when he finally plays for a college team he hardly ever misses because he trained himself for so long to shoot for a much smaller target. Practicing to improv through the changes without hearing the accompaniment makes playing through them with the chords so much easier! Thanks for the tip!

You are an amazing talent, Aimee. This reminds me to work in singing and ear training. It is so important for all improvisational musicians. I should be able to sing any interval from memory, and I should be able to play anything I sing. I have noticed that a lot of the great players sing to themselves while they are playing, but they aren't using a microphone so we can't hear them much.

This is great! I'm not a singer but it is good ear training and most of all for me it gives me soloing ideas. Need more of that. You probably done videos on soloing ideas for some tunes. Maybe one day you do that for On Green Dolphin Street or any jazz tune you like. You are the best teacher ever!! With big Gratitude from me

You're right; it IS hard! Just spent a half hour trying to scat through the changes and do well until that blasted abm7 chord and then I lose it :-) But I was practicing away from the piano. Will point and sing later. Great tutorial. Gonna work on it till I nail it! Thanks! :-D

I used to play with a bass player who considered this a tough tune but I never minded it much, although I knew why he felt that way, because I *loved* it. So maybe in addition to whatever training like this video offers, you should pick tough tunes you absolutely love so that the light comes on sooner? Obviously if you really like the tune there's something about the changes that speak to you. Just a thought.

In a way it is the perfect song for studying tonality in general: a lot of foundations in it, that big moment in so many thousands of standards where it goes to the IV for example...

Hi Amiee... have been watching a long time. Here are The Hi-Lo's with Dani Crayne on "Miss Jones"... thought you might dig it...kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppOylH95bKpqqsU their harmonies are the result of Gene Puerling, the guy on the left, a genius, who later wrote the vocal arrangements and performed in, "Singers Unlimited" the legendary vocal group. Here's SU in another favorite jazz classic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJfIoHaCZp2BqJY So happy you're sharing your knowledge with us all.
