"Standards are important, but the way to reach them doesn't have to be standardized." As an educator-to-be, this will be one of many mantras I will remind myself of. Thank you for this video!

Bloom: 3 different ways to learn: cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. Head, heart, and hands. Head is used most in traditional classroom. Can further elaborate the "head" way of learning to Apply, Understand, Remember (lower-order thinking skills: LOTS), Evaluate, Apply, Create (Higher Order Thinking Skills: HOTS). Buying a TV example. You learn as you shop (Create). The bottom of Bloom will stick if you do the top Bloom's taxonomy. Vygotsky focuses on the Zone of Proximal Development, or learning goals that are just within your reach. To combine them, imagine disks. The blue one is the Remember, Understand, and Apply disk. The red disk is evaluate and apply: side by side comparisons, peer rated pros and cons list, setting up focus groups, etc. Create is purple disk. Mix and match capacity for abstraction, inspiration catalyst, problem-solving, etc. To combine both Vygotsky and Bloom, the targeted learning should not be the technology, but a means to an ideal learning activity. Standards are important, the way to reach them doesn't have to be standardized.

Thank you so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed this very "theoretical" capsule... Some find it too long... It's not always easy to keep things under 10 minutes ;o).

So glad it could help! There are more coming. In the more "theoretical" series, have you watched Want Can Fun Need on the same Pedagogical Quickies channel? You might like it as well. Thanks for your positive feedback! It's very much appreciated.

Funny you should say that... A follow-up is in the works for the 2014-15 school year. I think I'll call it "Beyond Bloom, Flourish!". Thank you for your positive comments (this goes for so many other people as well... Sorry I can't reply to all). The next video is going to be about didactics do's and don'ts... I hope you'll dind it useful as well.

Incredible video! It summarizes very well what I wanted to transmit in the postgraduate degree I'm going to be teaching. I hope you don't mind me using your video for the flipped part of my class (in other words, to transmit the LOTS content of my lesson about ZPD and its relation to the Bloom's Taxonomy). Thank you very much for producing something of such quality and so entertaining. I'll be following you to see more amazing creations like this!

What a wonderful theory well presented. Thanks. I'm just putting a paper to bed on reconciling Vygotsy and Pask. A three way reconciliation is now whirring away between my two brain cells. :-)

I personally prefer Bloom's original order, with evaluate and create being flipped(the names were different as well, but that's not as important). I think being able to judge something, or to compare the quality to another, you need a deeper understanding. That kind of understand is often gained through creation. Whereas to create, do don't really need to evaluate.

Marc, great video. Very thorough and informative without being long and repetitive. I am currently doing my PhD on the flipped classroom in language classrooms and would very much like to adapt a model based on what you and Judith have come up (citing you both of course). Would that be cool? And of course, I'll share it with you both when I am finished.

Blueprint Teacher Since I don't work for the Quebec English School Boards anymore (my new videos for HEC Montréal are in French), it's going to be a little harder for me to work on that follow-up video. I'll see what I can do, but I can't promise anything ;o).

Hi Marc-André--we'd love to use this for training new online instructors, but need a captioned video (not auto-captioned). Do you have a captioned copy, by any chance?
@lalandema
@lalandema 9 жыл бұрын
+Lené Whitley-Putz Hello! Sorry I took so long to answer... I do not have a captioned copy and, as you might already know, creating those take some time. I hope I can offer you one at some point in the future, but for now, between work at the university and work on some new videos, I am completely booked.

Thank you for your comment. I did it with Powerpoint, actually. If you understand French, I started this series: www.tinyurl.com/avecPPT that was meant to cover different tips & tricks on how to use PPT to make presentations that don't look like PPT presentations. If I understand your comment correctly, there would be some interest for an English version?

A very interesting and thought provoking video. What are your thoughts on if the learner has not master ( or isn't comfortable ) with analysis/evaluate and create. Within the ZPD can the learning activity be scaffolded, so as not to shift the emphasis from the targeted learning objective?
