This video was done to dispel the myth that red dot sights are for close range only - hits at distance can be achieved with proper fundamentals

People forget that target shooters have been using iron sights at distance for decades with excellent results, it only makes sense they can do the same with red dots. Great shooting btw Larry!

That was great shooting Larry. I just cant wrap my head around the concept that a target further out should be larger. People do not get smaller if they're closer to you or larger further away, they stay the same size. An average chest size, where vital organs are located is 10X12"-ish, I would think no target at any distance should be larger. Aim small, miss small. Nice shooting with a red dot though, no one cant argue with that! Guess those 50 year old eyes are still work in just fine!

do some homework,,Mr. Vickers is the real deal. Larry Vickers of Vickers Tactical is a retired US Army 1st SFOD- Delta combat veteran with years of experience in the firearms industry as a combat marksmanship instructor and industry consultant. In recent years he has hosted tactical firearms related TV shows on the Sportsman Channel with the latest being TacTV of which Bravo Company is a presenting sponsor. Larry Vickers special operations background is one of the most unique in the industry today; he has been directly or indirectly involved in the some of the most significant special operations missions of the last quarter century. During Operation Just Cause he participated in Operation Acid Gambit - the rescue of Kurt Muse from Modelo Prison in Panama City, Panama. As a tactics and marksmanship instructor on active duty he helped train special operations personnel that later captured Saddam Hussein and eliminated his sons Uday and Qusay Hussein. In addition he was directly involved in the design and development of the HK416 for Tier One SOF use which was used by Naval Special Warfare personnel to kill Osama Bin Laden. Larry Vickers has developed various small arms accessories with the most notable being his signature sling manufactured by Blue Force Gear and Glock accessories made by Tangodown. In addition he has maintained strong relationships with premium companies within the tactical firearms industry such as Blue Force Gear, BCM, Aimpoint, Black Hills Ammunition, Wilson Combat, NET TAC, and Schmidt & Bender.

Totally did not read this book of a comment. Any way, this dude is absolute co witnessing with iron sights!? Marines do that shit with irons to qualify at 500 yards, at least they used to, so what does the aim point have to do with it???

@GruntBurger 5 жыл бұрын
When I was in the service, we went from irons to the m68. Didn't know it at the time, but because of my astigmatism my dot was a big red blob, and I was still hitting the 300 yard target every time. If you can't hit at distance with a red dot, the sight isn't the problem.

Did you notice that Larry must have a Astigmatism in his left eye? You can see that he was using a fixed rear peep sight, this will help eliminate a blob you see instead of a dot. If you have an astigmatism this will make the dot look crisp and round. I caught you Larry!

+grapeapevine 5.56 in a 16" barrel with M193 has a maximum effective range of 125 yards. Beyond that, fragmentation will not occur, thus wounding performance becomes miserable. M855 has an even shorter effective range. MK262 on the otherhand will still reach, but I'm not sure how far out I'd trust it. This is why you guys need to ditch the 16" barrels and get 18" or 20".

All depends on the bullet itself. FMJ, soft point, hollow point. Typical 55gr fmj frags little to none. As i said it tumbles when hits. The tumbling does not affect accuracy at all bc it happens after impact. Tumbling is not done in the air of course.. As you said it hits and the c.o.m is behind the point at the front so physics causes it to tumble unless completely straight on and no imperfections when it hits (very unlikely). Larger bullets are less likely to tumble bc of how long they are

I believe that "effective" realy means instant effect. Human body is filled with organs and important blood vessels. Hole in most of them will eventually have an effect, will it be seconds or minutes... Also distance to enemy means different threat level. Wounded enemy usualy will take one or two others out from fight, due to first aid and evacuation. Not always, but usualy.

As long as you know your hold overs, red dots work fine at distance. It's not precision, but you can definitely get combat accurate hits at distance. I never understood guys who say red dots only work to 200-300 yards...

I have just mounted an Aimpoint Micro T2 sight on my Steel-Action hunting rifle in 338 win mag and it is surprisingly easy to accuire targets out to 200 meters and make a hit., it is how far I testet it on small target (12 )cm in diemeter - clay pigeon. I hunt mosse, deer and other smaler animals and use the Steel-Action for the bigger stuff so I thing I will practise a littel on this setup and maybe I will use Aimpoint next seasong :=) I am 54 yo and still I have realativly good eyes, no glasses :🤠

These targets are kind of big though? Shooting a 20 moa target doesnt really prove anything special. In a real combat scenario the bad guys are in most cases going to be behind some sort of cover and the chances of getting a full body to shoot at are slim. And then you need time to position your dot for proper hold off and hold over, something that will be much slower compared to using a scope with a proper reticle. It's cool to do for fun but I still dont see a red dot being viable past 200 yards in any real world scenario. Not to mention even at 50 yards target identification can become difficult without magnification. Unless they start shooting at you first, you wouldn't be able to see them well enough to determine who they are and if they are a threat.

He said something wrong. When shooting long distance, you focus on the front sight post when shooting irons. This is true. But when shooting red dots, you can't focus on the dot. If you focus on the dot, it will blur out and become difficult to use. You have to focus on the target.

not very impressive considering size of target. Shit, at Parris Island they had this city boy from Philly going 10 for 10 every time at 500 yards with irons sights. Every Marine had to qual out to 500 yards with iron sights on BMOD targets which the black is much smaller than that steel. At that distance I would rather have irons for rear sight adjustment instead of a hold over. Federal 62 grain 556 has to be within 7 MOA at that distance, not positive at that number. Either way good shooting. I am a big fan I apprieciate the videos and I absorb the knowledge you like to pass on. I bought an aimpoint because the videos you make. Need to rezero, forgot about the paralax under 50 yards. Killed me on my action carbine shoot. I used my Co witness irons half the time. I was quick on ipsics but at 150 I had to a foot low hold. At 300 just bottom edged. Maybe you could do a segment on Aimpoint zeroing.

+Musty Smells Hmm, let see. Aimpoint has a 2MOA dot. 2 moa would be 2 inches at 100 yards, so roughly 8 inches at 400 yards. He doesn't say, but those targets look to be about a foot wide or more. So nah, I don't think so.
@mustysmells817
@mustysmells817 8 жыл бұрын
Do you even know what an MOA is? it doesn't make targets bigger when you aim down sight, it's simply to compensate bullet factors. Do you know why people use ACOGs and Scopes? It's to make objects larger at long distances. i don't think you knew that objects become smaller to the eye the farther they are.
@superbarnie
@superbarnie 8 жыл бұрын
+Musty Smells Uh, is English not your native language? It seems like you have trouble understanding what I'm saying. Do YOU even understand what an MOA is? An MOA is angle measurement. 1 MOA = 1/60 degrees. 2 MOA = 2/60 degrees. So if you do the trigonometry here, we can calculate the width a 2MOA dot will cover at 400 yards. 400tan(2/60) = 0.2327 yards 1 yard = 36 inches 0.2327 * 36 = 8.37 inches. So, the 2MOA dot covers 8.37 inches at 400 yards. And those signs on the video look to be atleast a foot wide or so, certainly more than 8.37 inches. Understand? Here's a diagram i drew for you if you still don't understand. i.imgur.com/VjV29IA.png Now go back to your Chinese cartoons, kiddo.
@superbarnie
@superbarnie 8 жыл бұрын
+Musty Smells At what point did I say that? You really need to learn to read. All I said was that at 400 yards those large signs are NOT smaller than the size of that red dot, contrary to what you said in your first comment.
