I love me some Scary Pockets and I have for a long time. Their ability to find fine musicians to perform classics. This one ought to be labeled "roller rink" music. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and this just screams for a place at the skating rink in a tent that would come to my home town for a few months every year or two. It's a great performance (I was soooo missing the voice box) with incredibly talented musicianship but if I really listen hard, I can hear skates on wooden floor in a tent. ALL SKATE!!!

Have you ever done a video on how your are run the recordings? I’ve see the Elise Tudrow that covered some of how song choices might be made, but what are those devises next to the horns and winds? What is playing in the headphones - a mix of live and prerecorded, or what? What choices need to be made in mic-ing and mixing? I’d be interested in that stuff.

I'm speculating, but I think her levels are actually pretty equivalent to Swatkins', but she's not really projecting or singing powerfully, so she doesn't feel equal.

@@jonathonshaw6688 You may be right. I'm actually an audio engineer, that's not how it sounds to my ears, but I could be wrong, I am far from infallible. Also, for what it's worth, I am not necessarily meaning both exactly peaking at, say, -3dB or something, but that she needs to SOUND as loud as him, regardless the actual levels each are peaking at. She barely cuts through the instrumentation (and in some cases, straight up doesn't cut through it), much less his talkbox. If I were mixing and mastering this, I would probably actually use inverse sidechain EQ like, say, TrackSpacer, to carve out more space for her voice in the mix. TS can even be used live, like in this situation. This is not to say the song isn't awesome, it totally is, just that the levels could be balanced better.

@@deathybrs Okay well I'm not an audio engineer, just a passionate listener who is playing around with his own vocals / guitars / drums / keys. So I certainly bow to your expertise on this one, and I do agree with what you're saying. However, I also don't think it's entirely fair to look purely at the technical side in this case: I think that Mz. Masa needed to give it more from her end. I don't really like to criticise (I prefer to be grateful for what I enjoy, and calmly keep on moving on by if I'm not enjoying something), but for me, the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell version is possibly my single favourite song in all of music, and part of that magic is Tammi really matching Marvin's energy. Personally, I feel that due to the lyrics and sentiments expressed, that this is a song which demands a powerful, generous vocal performance from all involved. If no obstacle can keep us apart, then I want to feel that abundant love overflowing in the delivery. Whereas I felt like Mz. Masa was holding back and not giving us nearly all of her voice. But I'm not a hater, and I still had fun with this cover. I'd rather say thank you to all involved than spread any kind of negativity :)

I just gave it another spin, and to be honest, I think I'ma do a half backflip on this and say that her singing is actually pretty lovely, and it's not easy to try and add your own spice to such an awesome original, and if she was just easier to hear in the mix that would probably rectify it just fine haha
