"Ain't No Sunshine" was the first of Withers' three gold records in the U.S. and he says "I KNOW" 26 times in the original version. I say it a few times more than that for good measure and because it's just good clean fun. 🤫

That’s cool, my friend is deaf and she loves dubstep and DnB style music because she feels the beat to dance. I never even considered something like this, I’ll send it to her and see what she thinks… she’s used to “listening”/feeling music every day, so I bet she could enjoy this too! She wasn’t born deaf, so she can imagine what it sounds like apparently… so I’m curious to know what she thinks of his crazy voice!

Geoff, I will never stop being in awe of your ability to remold a beloved classic into something beautiful and unique without losing the heart of the original. I can't get enough of this particular cover - it's heart-wrenching and also somehow ridiculously cool, with that groove and remix-y vibe. And the video! You've taken your video-making to a brand new level with this one, to say nothing of your deeply convincing acting. I genuinely wanted to give you a hug at the end of this. Kudos all around, sir.

Geoff, as a Baritone/Bass in a singing group I have to thank you for bringing awareness to the awesomeness that is a Bass singer. You have inspired me to solo more. So often as a Bass we are taught to stick in our lane of 1 4 5, and let the Tenors and Baritones solo, consequently, we never explore our mix and head voice. What you are doing is helping inspire and teach many Bass singers.

One voice that can sound like three or more different people. I might feel comfortable in only two vocal registers -- my regular mezzosoprano range and a lower range for singing along with Roger Miller, Marty Robinson, Johnny Cash, and the like. I'm not sure if my lower range is "chest" voice or if it turns into "subharmonic" at that point. I know I intentionally change the shape of my vocal tract and sometimes resort to vocal fry so I can reach the lower notes. I've taken more interest in this vocal range topic since discovering Home Free and Voiceplay.

you should check out all his other amazing stuff. Certainly plenty here on his channel (this and Shenandoah are my favorites, but 16 tons and Big John are awesome. Well, and everything else. Hard to go wrong.). But also, he sings as the bass (and half the time does the arrangements) for Voiceplay, a theatrical acappella group. They do a very wide variety so it's hard to know what people will connect with, but if you like this one you probably will like Tennessee Whiskey and Something Just Like This. And everyone who likes Disney should watch We Don't Talk about Bruno and Moana. Geoff is awesome (and so is the whole group) and they have LOTS of great options, and they just recently covered a Beach Boys Song and a Metallica song.

Your talent to sing, harmonies, arrange music and create such incredible videos is unparalleled for a solo artist. That image of you sitting surrounded by light-sunlight pouring in through the windows and glowing on the floorboards-while singing "ain't no sunshine" is really powerful. Goes to show how a dazzling exterior can mask a whole lot of inner pain and regret. The "darkness every day" is something we carry around inside of us. Reminds me of a line from another song: "There's a beauty in being broken, I've been seeing it." That's what you've done here Geoff; you've found beauty in the brokenness, and shared that vision with the rest of us. Thank you! 💙 (that line is from "Without Fear" by Dermot Kennedy, btw)

It was also a way to show the two wineglasses, one on its side. I think it's a nod to the original song, which was inspired after Bill Withers watched Days of Wine & Roses, about two alcoholics in an unhealthy relationship. When she was gone, she was often off on a bender. This guy is untucked, untied, undone -- another subtle detail to tell the story of the song.

OK, I'm slow. I finally realized how Geoff turned this song inside out, just as he did with Dream On. Withers made the song about missing a lost love. Geoff focused on the grief of passing time. The use of the repeated word 'anytime' (in the original, but not a focus) in the stutter/stop musical sequences (sorry, I don't know what that's called) to the fade sequences in the video that showed us this was an ongoing grief he'd felt many times in the past, to the background percussion that sounds like the ticking of a clock - all of that is powering this sense of grief and time lost. It's still about the girl, but much more focus on time passing. In Dream on, he took a forward-focused rock anthem and turned it around to focus on time gone by. Instead of the original last words, pushing forward, running ahead of time "Dream until your dreams come true, maybe tomorrow the good lord will take you away" - he transformed it to an elegy by making the last words "the past is gone." This is so much bigger than the usual "reinterpretation" that I'm simply in awe. It's so smoothly done that it took awhile to realize just how radical the transformation of both songs really is. Kudos, Geoff. This is ART.

AMAZING and beautiful. It even has the sticky effect, you nailed it. I just don't know how you accomplished such composition and development. I had the great honor of meeting Bill Withers many long years ago. He was a very nice, very kind man. I didn’t know him more than a few hours and I had no idea who he was at the time-which he and his crew thought very funny. A few days later I saw him on TV performing Lean On Me, a song I’d always loved. #Headsmack. Anyway, I remember thinking that day that he was a man who carried a lot of sadness and a lot of beauty with him-it was an odd thought but I never forgot it. I think this arrangement and Geoff’s performance really does him justice.

What a joy that you have given us the opportunity to support your music and your videos, Geoff. This one blew me away, auditory and visually and I'm so glad I helped for a small part to make this a reality, because I am in awe.. Immediately from the very first seconds, you start it off with this highly impactful, catchy and groovy motif which almost feels like a punch to the gut, which aids in telling the story to be told. Only to later strip it down and build it back up. I wish this could be about an hour longer, as I was absolutely enthralled by your interpretation of what is an absolute classic and you have my full attention. Using your entire range again, using so many layers and elements, with smoothly performed riffs which all has their role in the story you are telling. You have given this track such an updated feel, pacing and vibe. Whereas the original stays the same throughout, as usual you can't help yourself but to mix it up and make it different. Which is so interesting and with each listen there are more details to pick up on. On repeat. Endlessly. It won't get boring, It will join the ranks of the classics, as it's original inspiration. Visually, It is rather different from what we are used to from you besides the group shots, but I so SO appreciate you trying new things, and I duly enjoyed many of the choices you made. The movement of the camera, the composition of all the shots was really well done. The lighting, the effects that you added here and there. Unfortunately sometimes the group shot was a bit too blurry for my liking, but not in a way that disturbed the overall result too much. You always nail the details, this one is no different; Very fitting elements on set and one item making its return, the intentional blur, symmetric vs asymmetric shots.. The editing of the different chosen shots together with the camera movements really works. Your "acting" is a wonderful touch to change up your videos and in several parts you really sell the story you are telling. Thank you for trying different things and taking risks. This one is for sure near the top of the list of your best creations yet. Thank you for sharing this with us.

But the truly amazing thing is that his tone, vocal expression, clarity, timber etc. are "spot on" regardless of vocal register. On VoicePlay's cover of "Oogie Boogie's Song", you'll hear Geoff float from his upper registers to lowest registers with no detectable effort at all. His voice is smooth, haunting, sexy & delicious. The opening sound effect is reminiscent of wind whistling through a ghost town…a perfect way to start the song off with a feeling of desolation. The backing instrumentation 0:23 behind the opening chorus is also mighty impactful. It’s just that single note played on a piano, but it has the tone quality of tubular bells, ringing out a harmonic of the octave above the note being played, furthering that feeling of despair and desolation, like the feel of the tolling of an imposing bell tower. 1:17 The reverberant ticking clock starting at this section of the song captures the mood perfectly. You know that feel you get…you’re overtired, something heavy is weighing on your mind, you can’t sleep, you roll over to check the clock and it’s 3 AM and you’re distraught almost deliriously hallucinating with tired and worry? Clocks always seem to tick louder. This, combined with the heavily distorted instrumentation, embodies this discombobulated feeling brilliantly. Super distorted Muse-esque guitar/keyboard at 1:35 adds an uncomfortable feeling - conveying the distorted feeling of the singer, perhaps? Also at 1:35, there is an extra pulse in the backing vocals on the word “gone,” sounding like he is literally crying out. There is more white space in between the backing vocals at 1:49, giving a more disjointed feel…signifying that he is further falling apart? This, combined with the opening shot of this section being blurry and then slowly coming into focus, gives an impression to me that he is descending further into disorientation. Geoff's pose during this shot blurry/focused shot is very open and vulnerable, and the scene following has us witnessing Geoff deliriously roam around the kitchen as one shot dissolves into another...we've all been there. I felt this scene in my very soul. 2:18 - The introduction of strings pulls on the heartstrings even further, adding a whole new level of sadness. I love how there are bowed violins as well as a few pizzicato notes. The more sounds that enter this song, the more it conveys to me the feeling of a myriad of thoughts and feelings and emotions swimming around in your head. It’s a kaleidoscope of misery. At 2:27, there is a cool high instrumentation sound, followed by what sure sounds like vocals hitting a D5 to C5 crying out in anguish. The layers of emotion in this arrangement and performance are astounding. 2:38 - The first and only major chord in the song. There have been open fifth D chords, but this is the first full-on major chord. What does it signify? Did he think he glimpsed her out the window? Has she come back? Did he have a moment of clarity, of resolve? A momentary major chord in the sea of minor chords, a little glimmer of hope…but it is fleeting, as we then go back to the minor in the next phrase. 2:42 - There is an interesting effect put on Geoff’s voice here. It almost sounds like a memory of his own voice, reminding him that this has happened before. 2:47: All the elements of the song come back in - the ticking clock, the distorted guitar, the strong and low humming, along with a new sound effect, a wah-wah pulsing sound, a sound I can picture as disorienting after an entire night of no sleep. It pulsates in almost a syncopated rhythm, adding even more discomfort. All of these sounds jumble and swirl around in your head, creating a sense of disorientation. Very evocative of the feeling the singer has as he roams the halls of the empty house in despair. I love how the song doesn’t end all together. Each sound/instrument ends slightly off from each other. Just like the singer of the song seems to be slowly coming undone, so is the ending of the song.
