Thank you Ji for posting. Are you really sure that those are exact ragas you place the name in description? I want more, and i wish to laern from it, but very often i find mistakes in descriptions. Hare Krishna.

Hi Robert: Hare Krishna. I have pondered the same question regarding many of Aindra prabhu's kirtans. I am a student of Hindustani classical music for many years. Don't be too much perplexed. Aindra prabhu often seems to follow the general outline of ragas, but his approach or interpretation is different. That may make it hard to hear the raga clearly, as you may be used to hearing a classical performance of the same raga. A kirtan is usually vastly simplified, so that others can sing along. Strict raga rules may not be observed. Many details are left out. Also, Aindra prabhu plays harmonium in a surprising way, with harmonies that add unusual colors to a raga. This particular Asavari kirtan does in fact include many of the main phrases of Raga Asavari. But I agree with you that it does sound quite different. If you listen to classical singers of each raga on youtube, you will gradually see how some performances differ widely, but remain within the raga. Aindra prabhu's approach is even more different, but it is clear that he knows the material very well, and he is just putting it in the service of kirtan, according to his unique musical style. I first met him in 1973, and he was already an accomplished musician, before joining Krishna Consciousness. He was really brilliant at bringing some semi classical indian flavors into his own prema-saturated pure kirtan.

Can someone explain me please??? It sounds like Aindra Prabhu is not using proper classical hindustani raag... he is mixing... mishra... a bit "folk" aproach... right? i try to listen and learn, but is sounds a bit different than pure classical ASAVARI Raag. Please help.

In my opinion its quite hard to render raagas in the strictest sense during kirtan as the melodies tend to be more simplistic in their nature. Whereas in dhrupad or more modern styles the performances are superbly subtle and melodies can be quite long. I cant tell by hearing the raaga whether its mishra or not but i would say so. Also i am just trying to learn bits n pieces of hindustani music so forgive me for any offences or mistakes i did. Haribol !
