David Rose Marie......Mmm - yes, Mr Gaye was an amazing multi-talented artiste and an exceptional [if reluctant] singer.....but the 'greatest'? A greater vocalist than Levi Stubbs? And aren't you forgetting the singer that single-handedly made Berry Gordy [and Motown] the powerhouse producer and record company they became. I'm speaking of course, of the TRUE 'greatest singer' ever - Jackie Wilson. As Berry Gordy famously said of the late and [very great] Mr Wilson - 'He was so good, he could sing anything'. A more fitting tribute you will never hear.

As an elementary school kid in the 60s I didn't understand these songs in an adult way though I can still sing the lyrics from memory 50 years later. Those Motown songs pervaded the old neighborhoods before the neighborhood lost its collective mind. Weekends and summers were glorious before gangs and drugs destroyed things.

He brought the Church with all of his songs. That's why his father ultimately killed him. Maybe jealously as well.

@@jeffroberts8636 between smokey robinson and holland/dozier/holland no music outfit had better writers than motown. try marry wells' "the one who really loves you" for another of smokey's gems, or just go straight to the temptations' album "the temptations sing smokey" for non-stop bliss!!
