Investors are pouring millions of dollars into companies such as Joby, Archer, and Lilium that are developing electric aircraft designed to transform the way people and goods are moved around. Carmakers Hyundai and Toyota also want a piece of the advanced air mobility action. To cut through the hype, we asked industry expert Sergio Cecutta of SMG Consulting to find out if all that glistens is aviation gold.

I'm surprised at how they all fail to realize that the obvious configuration is a single seat in a sleek teardrop ultralight pod with two tilt wings. Low weight is key and the tilt wing is a simple way to have both hover and efficient high speed level flight for range. Low weight is key to the cost effectiveness of the vehicle. Clowns like airbus make a large clumsy vehicle like it was a bell jetranger and that just means you have a 5-10million dollar vehicle and that's really impractical for urban hopping for an LA resident going to the airport. You want minimal footprint and noise impact. Feather weight, stupid. I'm further surprised by how impressively little progress they make when funded by unlimited google money. Kittyhawk has been at it for 11 years. Lilium appears to never have flown with a person onboard or even weight equivalent. Maybe 7 years. Volocopter at least flies but has no fast efficient level flight mode. 10 years. An F.

I think you need to buy a Blackfly...by the way each mentioned company has a bit different approach of how to get to market and what segment they are specialized for...

@@electricaviationchannelvid7863 You mean the canopener blackfly? the quadriplegic seahorse? they are not really closing any sales. That's actually one of the designs that disappointed me most. So vulnerable to wind and terrain and so out of control in take off and landing. It seems reasonably efficient in flight but overall the design is very poorly thought through and nothing from them since in terms of realizing their mistake.

I'm not surprised. There's clearly no business case for wide scale adoption of drones that are large enough to carry people.

@@tomstickland I don't think that's true. I think it has quite a big potential, greatly amplified if the design and sound profile are very good. Places like London, NY and LA could be swarms because it dramatically changes transit times. Once readily available, it's just going to be very attractive vs spending 35 minutes each way every day. So it could have extreme potential.
