I got two broken AIO's now and really bummed about it. But instead of throwing them out, I'm thinking about buying a pump/reservoir and use the two AIO's as a cpu and gpu coolers by frankensteining all three together. :)

I had a very low budget at the time, so I bought the cheapest I could find. While the frankensteining worked, the pump wasn't strong enough. The system throttled when stressed.

My old Coolermaster AIO pump died the same week I bought my Ryzen CPU, this has given me the idea to tear my AIO apart and just reuse the radiator in a custom loop, so thank you for that. I'll be using waterless racing coolant though as it seems to have the best cooling properties paired with anti-corrosion, and for $30USD I get enough for 3 240mm radiators.

Im no expert but i would think you need some air space in the closed system to allow for expansion when the coolant heats up. Fully filling the system with fluid will pressurize it and eventually force leaks to occur. This is why factory new AIO liquid coolers are never completely full. It would be worth while adding a reservoir to allow for expansion/contraction while allowing the rest of the cooling system to be full of coolant. Great video, thank you for taking the time to make and share it.

ervince allen although I really want to like the video, I myself notice that as well. I mean for the blocks and radiators this would not be a good idea. Mixing metals with weird fluids can be bad.
@MindBlank86
@MindBlank86 7 жыл бұрын
+ervince allen I had to add some anti corrosive agent since the loop has copper and aluminium. Antifreeze inhibits corrosion, that's its second main property. In cars you have 2-3 types of metals. I've seen a lot of people running antifreeze mixes and their loops are ok. I think it's important to not go overboard with it. And yeah, food dye is bad. :D. The red ink works just great though!

+ervince allen You know nothing John Snow. There's nothing wrong with running antifreeze, proven by science and proven many times elsewhere on the internet. Food coloring is just dye not exactly a big no-no, but I wouldn't recommend it either. The main issue everyone was concerned with was if the antifreeze would react with acrylic parts, there are not any acrylic pieces in AIOs to begin with and the same metals in AIOs are found in car cooling systems not an issue at all(antifreeze is ethylene glycol): www.eplastics.com/Plastic/plastics_library/Chemical-Resistance-of-Plexiglass-Acrylic.

ive tossed around the idea of combining a 120 cooler on a GPU with a 240 or 280 cooler on the CPU and have the loops connected, and adding a res to it. i dont think it will help performance-wise, but i think it would give the overall system more of a full custom look. i was thinking of a corsair h50 or h55 (same cooler, 55 comes with amd and intel brackets, 50 only has intel, but is often cheaper) and a 115i, since that has an available ryzen bracket from their website, and future upgrades are coming down the pipeline. i never thought to use the braid-reinforced tubing, you can find that at most hardware stores for really cheap, so thanks for the tip

I'm tempted to do this with my old water2.0 in the spare machine now, as I know there's a reasonable amount of air in it. out of curiosity I might just have to drain the stock coolant into something I can measure it with, refill the system completely, and drain the fresh coolant into a second container as to determine exactly how much air is in it right now. then put the new coolant back into it of course lol

+KinkyKinga1 Let me know how it goes. Why does it have air in it? Coolant evaporation over time?
@YouNameItGaming
@YouNameItGaming 7 жыл бұрын
Will do mate. nah I don't think it's evaporation that has done it, it's always sloshed around a fair bit indicating a bit of air in it from factory. which can be expected, as they're no doubt filled in a hurry at the factory and there's still enough coolant in it to keep things running cool, but any air is space that could be filled with more water for even greater thermal efficiency

I'm in the same boat, but for myself. I built a nice gaming pc, but wanted a full tower instead of a mid tower, wanted an Intell I7-12700kf cpu instead of my AMD Ryzen 7 5800x. Because I switched cpus, I now need a different motherboard, so I ordered everything, will arrive Saturday. However, I'm stuck on cooling. I currently have a corsair H150I elite AIO waterclooler, however, I want the REAL liquid cooling, clear tubes, pump/reservoir, etc. But it's crazy expensive, I'm trying to find a cheaper way to have a nice liquid cooling loop. I've already put almost $10,000 building and rebuilding my gaming pc. I may just spend the $600-$800 on a kit, but would rather not

unless you are ready for constant upkeep do NOT use any pastel fluid unless it is being used TEMPORARILY especially with the small diameter hosing. i had pastel fluid in my ridiculous custom loop and within a few month noticed temps started to climb the coolant had already started to clog all of my water blocks. Took 3 days to completely disassemble clean and reassemble the entire damn thing. From what i have hear and will be using next is TT coolant and than i will use some of their transparent dyes to color the fluid. This should last just under 2 years before needing to be changed out and hopefully will never clog my blocks that sucked massively to break everything down completely soak and clean it. also the pastel dyes your tubing in like a few days and they start to become hazy. My next endeavor is going to be to turn this into a dual loop system to increase the flow and use the 2nd pump i already have and to avoid buying another d5 lol. Even tough im gonna have to spend another 200 bucks on fittings and other misc crap. 2 different colored loops will look amazing tough.
@MindBlank86

Yeah, I know the coolant looks pink - it's because the tubes are ever so slightly blue-green-ish and it mixes with the orange coolant. Pro tip if you get a dirty rad in the coolant and you have a clog: pump coolant with a syringe through the open port on the rad. This might push the debris out the pump inlet. Also, here's the link to the wallpaper behind me: imgur.com/sdJzzJn - thank me later! :D

@juliart

yes, i cannot find the video now but most brand name AIO manufacturers will leave about 2% of the loop as air for this reason.
@handlesarefeckinstupid
@handlesarefeckinstupid 2 жыл бұрын
When you use flexible tubing the expansion is taken up by the tubing. Water cooled rigs dont get 'hot' water and the expansion is negligible. The manufacturers fill them as best they can and the gap is left by air settling out of the liquid. You can work out the expansion using maths if you want but it is tiny. The gap is left by manufacturing. Ideally there should be none and an expansion portion left in a 'weak' point.

Great job! If you are interested, you could add an peltier with two water blocks and a second radiator to the "loop". This way it might be possible to avoid the condensation problem, by moving the cold part further away from any electrical component. The peltier will help bring down the temperature of the water much lower. At least in theory...
@MindBlank86
@MindBlank86 7 жыл бұрын
+thesilviu silviu This should be pretty complex and I think the results are not anywhere near the level of work. As an experiment and cool thing to do, that would be awesome indeed. :D Peltier cooling is very cheap on chinese wholesale websites.

MindBlank Tech, indeed, this scenario is a bit complicated, but I think I will give it a try. Aio is a big No,No for me, but seeing that it is relatively easy to mod, the hybrid cooling might be the next thing, after Rgb...?
@halsaufschneider1446
@halsaufschneider1446 6 жыл бұрын
Very bad idea. Not only are peltier energy waster. If you fall below room temperature, for what ever reason. When your PC is on idle & your window open for example. Then you face a serious condensation problem directly at the CPU/water block! Below the CPU is the mainboard. And most of the time, further down are the GPU - PCIe socket's. I would not recommend even a single drop of water anywhere on a mainboard. The risk is simply too high. No matter how much radiators some one uses, getting below room temperature is not possible that way. Because physics. So that is the only save option. Creating/Using a temperature controller for the Peltier, to only activate under full CPU load or above a certain temperature is another option. But that is something not anyone without higher electronics knowledge could achieve. Or even should! We are talking here about electric & fire hazards. Actual damage against life & limb if something goes south through careless tinkering.

Also, why do you need biocide in anti-freeze? I would have figured that stuff was already toxic enough to kill most organisms.

Maybe I'm just too simple for this task, but at the 5:58 mark it looks to me like the coolant (orange) is going the wrong way through the system. Shouldn't it be getting sucked up the free end of the tube (the one *not* connected to the rad), going through the pump, then into the radiator. Once the system is full, it should spit out the open barb on the rad. Or maybe I'm missing something.

Every thing seems to be fine, temps are well under 40C and all, but I would like to bleed the air out and/or refill my coolant. I'm not really sure if it can reclose if I open that port up but it should since that's how manufacturer filled it in the first place. Thoughts? If you see pics of the rad you can see a port right by the tubes/nipples on the RAD. Thanks

@MindBlank Tech Were you able to reach 3600mhz on the ram with any other ryzen cpu?

+Patrick S Hey! The 1600 caps at 3200, the 1600X at 3000-ish and the 1500X around 3050-ish. The 1600X is the poorest of these 3. Only my 1700X can go to 3600 and it caps around 3650 but some high-ish CL setting. 3000 is ok for any Ryzen CPU, which is the frequency that each of my CPU's managed. I think there's a fairly high chance that a Ryzen 5 can do 3200 which is the max on most boards (no bclk OC) anyway.

MindBlank Tech Would it be possible for you to get ahold of another 1700x,to see if it is a fluke (a really good memory controller on your cpu),or if it's the combination of parts and can be attained with another 1700x?If another 1700x reached the same 3600mhz on the ram ,this would help amd and the the community to show that there is definitive reason and value to the X.Thank You

+MindBlank Tech Interesting that you say the 1600X can only reach 3000ishMHz. With the Ripjaws V F4-3200C14D-16GVR, the MSI B350m Gaming Pro, and the 1600X I was able to get RAM speeds of 3200MHz. Maybe your setup is different, but 1600X can most definitely work with 3200MHz RAM.

Can you do a vid on swapping the radiators out, say a 140 for a 280 on a eVga hybrid cooler? I am tempted to do this myself.
