Steve Allan : I've got a aa tx 200 hc. This was bought brand new back in 98/9 time and has hardly been used. In the years since purchase I've lost the effective use of my right index and middle finger and now find I cannot load it (!). Love the gun but I'm now a dead loss to it. What may be more suitable per loading etc, please ?

That's what's great about your reviews Steve, you dig deep and you are not scared to show the lesser points! especially here where you show the stiff bolt pull, that alone would be enough to make my mind up! and I shoot an fac 97 here in New Zealand, which takes a bit of muscle to cock it.... bolts on the other hand - should be smooth and effortless... just my two cents worth, great review! you are now my go to reviewer for all things air rifle related, because you show the truth, the reality, not sales puff or sponsored backslapping!

Steve forgot to say I bought a Lane regulator and my goodness does it work! I plotted the power curve and it is pronounced, with the reg in it flattens it out dramatically. If you could get someone who wants to put on in they are so easy, with a little fore thought and measure twice drill once you can improve the already brilliant air weapon. I hunt and it's a fantastic tool. Your right about the cocking, and yes you can double feed it, you have to be rough and yank the bolt back, but that's the only fault I could find. If it does does feed the pellet in but doesn't cock you have to take out the magazine and fire the gun when it's cocked before putting the mag back. Once you get to know your gun this happens very infrequently.
@airgunology
@airgunology 7 жыл бұрын
Most rifles benefit from an after market regulator and of course you get a better power curve. The bolt on the 410 is a bit hard, but you do get used to it.

I have an Air Arms S410 with the swivels and different filler valve, not sure what you call it but I see it as a 'T' connection, therefore no scratching, very very accurate and can hold its own with any other air rifle in the same catergory. I have had groups the size of a ten pence piece at 45 yards no problem depending on the wind conditions. Yes the bolt is finnicky and could double load a pellet, but you know about thes things and comensate for them. Has anyone got the 'PERFECT' AIR RIFLE WITH NO FAULTS? I dont think so, but for my money the S410 is as good as any other on the market so why spend more money on something that only does the same. But you guys with plenty of money like to brag "Mine cost in excess of £1100 " Does it do any more than my sub £1000 S420? Dream on baby lol

Key to using a s410 bolt action is to use your first finger of hand on the handle and keep your thumb on the rear of the bolt receiver and it feed easy and perfectly
@airgunology
@airgunology 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is how I ended up doing it, just didn't feel right to me. I prefer levers.
@Beesa10
@Beesa10 4 жыл бұрын
I found the bolt a bit awkward to operate at first too but after using the rifle for a little while I realised the easiest way is to make sure when pulling back you apply the force directly inline with the bolt. I push the bolt handle up then hook my finger around the base of the bolt handle and put my thumb on the other side so I'm pinching the rear of the bolt and pull it directly backwards. Bit difficult to explain but very easy to do.
@airgunology
@airgunology 4 жыл бұрын
Yup, common with a lot of bolt actions and why many like Brocock moved to side levers. The higher the ft / lb the harder they become
@Beesa10
@Beesa10 4 жыл бұрын
@@airgunology Hello Steve, I personally don't find the bolt action difficult to operate using the technique I've described. The side-lever actions seem more ergonomic but are slightly more complicated. Side-lever actions have gained popularity, the latest high end PCP airguns are side-lever (I wouldn't say no to an FX Crown!) but I also wouldn't dissuade anyone from buying a bolt action like the S400/410. When you figure out how to pull the bolt directly backwards they are easy to operate regardless of the hammer spring weight. All the best

Very nice review, things I agree with. The bolt is stiff( I have the s410 classic in .22) and there is the risk of double load. There is also the risk of the pellet dropping out of the magazine but the loading and magazine is simplicity itself and is far far better than some others. The safety catch behind the trigger is, well to put it bluntly a pain in the arse, I removed mine and haven't missed it, although the three people I have shot accidentally may disagree (I'm joking, it was only two ). The shot count is poor compared to what you can get nowadays but that may cost you over a thousand pound more. In the end for me it's all about accuracy and these guns are bob on, shooting off sticks I can get a full magazine inside a twenty pence at fifty yards, which for me is excellent , I would also add it's a proper hunting rifle by that I mean it can take a little bit of rough and tumble , when I look at some of the new rifles out, I would be scared to take them ratching through woods etc incase I marked them up. Oh one other thing, I have never needed high mounts to clear the magazine but maybe you did in the older versions, so I wouldn't or couldn't say that's wrong. Love your videos, catching up and binge watching them all.

forgot to say for all you left handers out there like me consider the S510 coz theres a massive advantage. The super smooth side lever bolt is on the right of the gun meaning u can easily index the next shot with your free right hand coz its so light to pull back. while your left hand is still on the trigger and eye down the sight meaning u can shoot your 10 shot clip very fast without ever taking your eyes of your target very big advantage for hunters or anyone who just likes to look cool shooting 10 shots super fast

Thanks for letting me know. Some of the retailers I've seen charge an extra 90 pounds for a left handed version of the S410. So I'm considering the S510 after seeing your comment. Do you know if there are any other differences between the S410 and S510? I reckon the reason his cocking handle is upside down is because it's a left handed handle on a right handed rifle.

To pull the bolt back properly put your thumb on the oposite side of the bolt handle before you pull back. the old models also have a 2 sear trigger where the new ones have a 3 sear trigger so easier to set it very light. The S400 classic is the best model IMO and its the cheapest.

I've got an S410 and they're a superb rifle, easy to work on and accurate. The only fault with the magazine is when full and in your pocket the last pellet will fall out, if you want a 9 shot leave the last empty (like the old six shooters in cowboy days) other wise turn the magazine a a fraction on the last pelt so it stays in, then before inserting it turn it so the pellet will cycle.

Hi Steve making my way through your videos they are amazing... the main problem I have with my s400 (practically same rifle) is that when I'm out hunting I catch my bolt ALOT and when I try to take a shot the bolt then blows open but I love the gun it's probably my error for not checking before taking the shot... but now I tend to place my thumb on the bolt to eliminate this... it's my first air rifle and love the gun and the sport

I relied heavily on your vid to buy an updated one of these and it came yesterday (mid July 2018). I went for the longer rifle not the carbine as my first PCP rifle after a lifetime of spring air guns. I set the sights up with recommended Exact Jumbo pellets and found these harder to reycle in the magazine, because as you say the bolt is so stiff. After about 100 shots I started using a tin of Crosman Domed Ultra Magnums and it was far easier to recycle and like a different gun to shoot, so it depends on the pelletsI think. I will try the domed Air Arms pellets as you recommend. (the other things you mention they have now corrected) so many thanks for your vid.

" uninspiring "? well !! not sure about that , MOST PCP' s will group excellently @ 25yrds / 25mtrs , its when you stretch the limits too 40mtrs > 50mtrs + things become a little " spread out " in the grouping stakes , a great gun for sure , ( I know a few folk who have them ) but I think id go for my R10 ( .177 ) every time , same price bracket new I think .. anyway I kinda fancy either a Daystate MK4 , or an AA S510 ultimate sporter , the only thing that puts me off the AA is the lack of single shot capability .. recon ill see what crops up at the shooting show at Stoneleigh next month ... sorry for rambling on ... 10/10 for yer vid

I liked all your comments which I thought were spot on both negative and positive. I have just bought a second hand AirArms carbine S410 C (with safety catch) last week. Perhaps you can help me with one issue. I took it out today and found that the first shots were all over the place, but I was using a mixture of pellets the Diablo and a David Nickerson Magnum point in my magazine. I cannot think of why this should affect the accuracy, but I stopped mixing and sighted it in again then tried one mag with Diablo and one with Magnum. Problem resolved. Is it a practical thing todo before a new shoot to fire of a couple of pellets to "warm the barrel"? Would appreciate your advise on this.

All pellets are made different and even in the same tin. That's why serious people even sort their tins into groups of pellets that match. So never mix pellets when shooting, especially target shooting as you will get all sorts of results from pellets weighing different, different shapes and flight paths. You also right on lining your barrel, always fire 10 or 15 shots when changing pellets. Looks like you learnt this lesson. Good luck and thanxs

Hi there, i bought a second hand s410 a few months ago (my first pcp) i think mine is the (A) model because of the lack of safety catch and mine also had the upside down bolt. I've since replaced it with a brass one. Also i had to tune the power down with the small grub screw because it was shooting at 23ft lb on my chronograph the (a) models we're pre anti tamper and easy to adjust. Mine also likes the AA field pellets, I love this rifle ;-)

my 410 was often having problems with recycling but if I keep one finger on the magazine as I pull the bolt and move it forward the pellet will be in the breech ok.Am I the only one having this problem.
@airgunology

I never had this problem, but others may comment. Are you sure the mag was clipped in correctly ?
@inger9727
@inger9727 7 жыл бұрын
The mag was such a tight fit when I got it my local gunshop thought the barrell had been nudged into the breech.so he moved the barrell so that metal ring wasn't as pressed as tight to the mag.al let you know happens m8

The stock looks like a weapon from the early days of muzzle loaded guns, where after firing it was reversed and used as a club.

When you did the pellet test, where they using the same specks as the one that was made for the air rifle? ..... I think it was 5.5 and 16 ? for the good ones?

It deliberately used random tins to prove a point for newcomers. So yes the wasps were loose in the barrel

right.. the bolt action is easy. what you do is throw the gun away from you & pull the bolt back at the same time, then you have the motion of the gun & you pulling back at the same time, think how j wain spun his rifle & cocked it. its all in the wrist action. yee haar

Does anyone prefer spring rifles to pcp?
@airgunology

Many people do as they find PCP just too easy. Many also like the rawness of a springer, back to old school.

Steve Allan thanks for answering is there any advantages to Springer's
@airgunology
@airgunology 6 жыл бұрын
Cost, ease of use, not having to have air tanks or pumps to fill them.Basically have a rifle and pellets and you are good to go with a springer.

When I did my introduction into air rifles, I didn’t get on with the PCPs i tested. I love the idea of a magazine, But there was no ‘feel’ to it, and as Steve said, ongoing costs are higher than a springer. I ended up buying an Air Arms TX200 Mark 3 with a custom stock and internals and I love it. Feels like there is more skill to it, imo anyway.

Hi Steve it’s typical of us British isn’t it? If there is a fault it’s crap, but if it’s all perfect it’s too good with no character 😂😂😂 maybe you should look at the stiff bolt action as a quirk and it may seem better ....err worse errr more appealing then 😂👍👍👍
