Air Canada apologizes to B.C man who was forced to drag himself off flight

Air Canada has apologized to a B.C. man after staff told him he would need to get to the front of the plane without any assistance. The airline has also admitted it violated Canadian disability legislation. Jon Hernandez has more.

This happened to my father yesterday on a WestJet flight from Ft Lauderdale to Toronto. When I checked him in at the ticket counter I advised them that he needs the wheelchair as he is 81 and has severe osteoarthritis of his knees. I also told them he had low vision. The airport aide took him to the gate and left him there. The airline then announced a gate change and he was left behind. It was only because a Good Samaritan fellow passenger noticed and then took him to the correct gate. She then had to make sure they boarded him because at this point they weren’t even looking for him or aware of his presence. Seriously? He almost became like a set of lost luggage.

$1000 credit each?? What type of an apology is that?? It's good how this man said to use the $ to start a program, training staff. It highlights how little $2000 is. That amount can't even get 1 person trained. Shame on Air Canada.

Shocking, imagine the other passengers too, not knowing what the hell was going on, and to hear about it afterwards, I'd fire all of the involved staff on the spot

Air Canada staff very very rude and ruthless. I recently had a bad experience with the ground staff in Montreal

Terrible story and sorry this man had to endure such terrible service. On the other hand, I recently broke my leg and had to travel to San Diego a few weeks later, I called Air Canada Medical and they changed my seats to provide the most leg room for me and my whole family no charge. They arranged for a person to escort me through security and US Immigration with a wheelchair, then transferred me to a golf cart to get to my gate. The return was the same. I was able to use my crutches to and from my seat so my situation was different, but do have to say the service from AC in my case was nothing short of excellent.

He wasn't forced to drag himself off. He was told he would have to wait for assistance or he could get himself to the front of the plane. He CHOSE to drag himself rather than wait. Crappy service from the service provider in Las Vegas, NOT Air Canada. Stop whining and get on in your life.

That is not true at all. We were told to make our way to the front of the plane - that no crew was coming, there was no assistance coming.
