This was great!!! Thank you for sharing. I’ve been teaching myself jewelry making techniques for a few years but started getting into copper about a year ago. I love it! The more I try the more I want to learn. I’ve been focused on fire painting or fire patina (it’s just so cool!) but also trying to accomplish cool textures. I’ve been wondering how this sort of texture was achieved. I’m happy to see It doesn’t take a super expensive machine or press. I have most of the tools already which is awesome. I love the pieces you’ve done and really appreciate the tutorial :)

Thanks! I’m a self taught jeweler too (for the most part). Copper is a great material to start with because it’s so much less expensive than silver and I love the way it looks too! I just finished posting a new video of a pair of sterling silver earrings I made using the same air chasing technique - segments of my process from start to finish. I hope you’ll watch!

@@izabitjewelry1294 Hello, I am interested but I do not understand anything ... some doubts, when burning it with the torch, then it instantly cools in water? Is that for the patina (more beautiful color) or is it to work the piece easier? And another question, the hooking of the earring to the ear, can they be bought or are they also handmade? Thank you if you can answer me and I hope you understand me ... it is with google translator

you can also use an oyster shucking knife (you can dull the edges a bit for safety) to open the copper after you've chased it.

Wonderful! Can I ask what surface you gave it on when hammering it to flatten it out? Is it a steel block or something less harsh?
@rabbycacker6 жыл бұрын
You can use a flat or mill file to dress the end of your punch where it has been peened by blows from the steel hammer. An 8 to 10 inch file not including the handle would do nicely. Longer is better usually as you can get a longer stroke. Simply clamp the file horizontally in your vise with the damaged end protruding out about an inch. If the punch has flat sides match the angle of the file stroke paralell to the length and the angle of the surface and push forward with a moderate amount of down pressure. Continue strokes until the surface is flush. Rotate the file for the next flat and repeat the process. If the punch is round the process is similar other than using a round over motion during the stroke. It will make sense when you try it. Other wise a belt sander would do nicely as well if you have one in your shop. If you are really into metal working a mini grinder, bench grinder etc. will also do the job. Goes really quick even with a file and your punch will set back in its index.

I don't understand why you are quenching after annealing while you are still in the process of shaping. It is my understanding that you would only quench after annealing to fix the final shape.

I usually put a fire extinguisher on a side or behind me, not behind the fire. But having it in view is worth a lot too - in a panic situation, you can see a fire extinguisher, but not think about where it is.

Ever thought about using a small automotive air hammer? Many use them - including me - for some types of forging. You might be surprised how well it would work. Different patterns, no hammering, etc. Tooling would be easy to make.

With that type of camping stove butane and those torches, if you tip it up and get any liquid in to the injector orifice, it will instantly block due to the low quality gas.

I've currently got a electrician/plumber's work site right next door as they're replacing the kitchens and bathrooms and the old wiring in the flats where I live. It's like Christmas with all the pieces of copper I keep picking up. I usually buy copper from a jewellery suppliers and its treated to stop it turning your skin green or black...do you have any tips as to any ways to stop it from doing this because its so lovely looking until I wear it lol! I know I can do various patinas and things like that but is there any sort of home made (read 'Cheap' lol!) Ways to stop it reacting with skin?

Elizabeth, I love your video--and appreciate you sharing your expertise! I visited your Etsy shop. You have such unique and fabulous designs. I've been making and selling my jewelry for a while; but, each year challenge myself with learning a new technique. This year it is fold forming. Your video is straight-forward. And, your voice & approach is very encouraging--Yes, you can do this! I do have one question. I've been researching quality torches--that aren't going to cost a huge amount but will get the job done. You mention that you love your torch; but, I can't make out the brand. Would you mind sharing that info? Thanks again for making such a wonderful video! I'm going to browse through your Etsy shop soon. Maggie

If your'e serious about it don't buy a butane/or propane torch to start. It looks like she's using propane. I use a Mapp torch for years now . Much higher temp if needed and reasonably accurate point of heat for delicate work. That's in the €100 bracket if you buy a good quality brand.

I was using 24 gauge in the video. You can use heavier gauge and you can use lighter gauge - it just depends on how you want to use it and the sturdiness you require. I'd suggest experimenting with some different gauges :) - Good luck, and thanks for watching the video

wouldn't it be softer after annealing if you didn't quench it?
@brandysigmon90666 жыл бұрын
Copper is the opposite of carbon steel, you get the copper red hot and then quench it to anneal it. If you did the same process to high carbon steel it would harden it, they are backwards. You anneal silver and gold the same way you do copper. It's weird but that's the way it's done.

Who’s selling copper by the ga. It’s sold by ounce 16 once sheet being the most common
@mikeeagle26535 жыл бұрын
E vI I from New York but live in florida. Copper being sold by a jewelry maybe why they are selling copper by the Ga. i own a metal fabrication shop and do many art projects and have been buying copper for the last 20 yrs. when you buy copper sheet Is comes 3ft x 10ft and sold by the ounce. Most typically 16 ounce. But since your purchasing from a jewelry supplier and not a metal supplier Is why its sold different. 16 ounce = 24 ga. Nice work

Fire extinguisher needs to be away from your work and not where you might need to move across a burning area. Talk with your fire department safety people and have them explain about the placement. They most likely will be quite happy to help you with this. What you are doing is dangerous.

You should never quench when annealing. You’re defeating the purpose of annealing. By quenching your actually Harding the metal. Better to let cool or blow air on it.
@lowbflat15 жыл бұрын
Actually, quenching hot copper and sterling softens it, unlike steel.
@mikeeagle26535 жыл бұрын
Michael Miner Quenching copper does not soften it at all. It doesnt make the copper softer it just doesn’t temper it like it does with steel. I do all of my steel work without heat or rather 95%of my work. There are the 5% of the times you cant get around it. Copper and steel are to totally different animals when it comes to using heat.
